Double Crap! Double Post!!

Well, as long as I'm here, and as a resident average American, middle-aged, white collar, white middle-class male, I think it's only appropriate for me to add my very important opinion on feminism here.

I find myself in compplete agreement with PhoenixRose on this, as has been echoed by others here.

I think the second wave, call it the militant phase, had to overcompensate a bit just so that a future equilibrium to occur. I agree in principle that if the choice is to "stay at home", or to become Brainless, Bubble-headed Barbies the option should be available and not judged. I do however understand the horror of the original freedom fighters at the prospect of having their sacrifices reduced to Paris Hilton.

Oh damn I can't believe I'm the one who suggested a new thread and then got distracted so I missed being first...argh!

Oh well..we were pondering feminism, but I'd like to add to that with this... do you think there will ever be a female president of the United States?

No comment on the feminism, but I do think we will have a female president sometime in my lifetime, as well as an African-American (or other ethnicity) president. I think it would drastically change things, and it would most likely be a big improvement on the current occupant of that chair.

I guess I just find it interesting that even countries with far more adversive attitudes toward women ( India, South Africa, Serbia, the Philippines, etc.) have had female leaders and we with our " progressive" attitudes haven't. Here's alink to a list of all the countries who've had female president...kinda huge

I do believe we are, if not immediately close, at least very close to having a Female President. However, while there may be an "Oh my God!" moment for everyone, I don't think the overall change will be radical. Just as it took 100 years from Emancipation to Civil Rights, and 50 years from Suffrage to Equal Rights (and bear in mind neither movement has completely finished its work), it'll be a few terms before the ripple manifests itself significantly. Pushing too much change would be political suicide. All it took was some misplaced body fluid to begin an impeachment, and a woman in power would present a much lovelier target. (It's interesting to note here that a misplaced war couldn't rouse such an action and still won't...)

Feminism: I guess I really just don't understand it. I mean there are plenty of militant, angry feminists. Those are just annoying and are quickly ignored by me. Then there are ones who want anything and everything good throw their way but none of the bad. "I want equal pay to men!"..."mandatory signup for the draft at 18...uh no how about men keep that one" Granted the equal pay thing seems like it should have been taken care of a long time ago, but still there are differences between men and women. There will never be perfect equality. Nor should there be. Though I don't even know if that's really the feminist movement either. So, if someone could define feminism for me that'd be great. A list of what they're for and against would be nice too.

Don't know if the "Movement" is really representative of the post-modern feminists have of themselves, so it may be that your question is unanswerable.

That is a good point. *sigh*

[ rantish ] Zeek, you make a good point with the equal rights but not equal responsibilities. I don't know any women who would voluntarily sign up for the selective service. Also, how many women trash collectors have you seen? Janitors? Slaughterhouse workers? etc. Now, I am with Tristan in that I will hold the door even if she is kicking my shins (maybe I need you to make me some armor as well ), but it seems that most women who push for equality have this double standard. [ /rantish ]
I am not knocking women, or attempting to degrade the fairer sex in any way, just adding my own $0.02 (even though I didn't choose to earlier).

hmmm I think it would depend on the guy and his reason for holding the door, but for the most part, I like it. ( I just had a co-worker who would rush to open doors for me and every time he'd say " I don't want you to hurt your tiny little hands" He was always really condesending to me with comments and things so I really hated him opening doors for me)

Well, now that we've entered a realm in which I am intimately involved, I will have to get back to this. I'm at work, so I can't devote the time and thought I want to this topic.

RiverIsMyGoddess - regarding the underlined portion of your quote: I'm having trouble phrasing this nicely... so maybe I shouldn't... yeah, I better just remain silent for now so I don't have to apologize later.

My prediction: Hilary (sp?) Clinton will never run for President, for many reasons.

Catching up (but still far to go):

Gyms – They are made for sweating. If you’re not sweating, you aren’t doing what you’re there to do. Get out. Don’t like your smell? Chances are we don’t like your smell either but we’re smelling as bad or worse than you so who is going to care? Take a shower!

“JQ’s on meds???”

Yes, little children, I’ve been on antidepressants since late July/early August, about the same time I stopped lurking and started posting on FFF.net. (While I believe there’s no such thing as coincidence, I choose to not get at a correlation between the two events…)

I am not a pill popper. Not a friend of doctors’ offices. Not a phobia, just come from stock that’s equal parts stout and stoic. But, realistic enough to allow for the truth, once I see it, which can take inordinately long.

For now, my meds serve my needs to a degree. Time will tell what if any adjustments will need to be made. I applaud you taking the step James. And I applaud your fabulous blogspot, Magda, sweet Magda. (Everyday, everyday, I ask myself how is it she is still single. I understand your vow of celibacy as I understand your vow of poverty as I understand your lack of a vow of silence. But c’mon! If the right Knight came along you’d forget all that, wouldn’t you? Give these menfolk some hope!) Also—and I find this very curious indeed—when I minimized the CrazyPurpleWombat window, it’s title in the taskbar said “CrazyPurpleWomb! What do you make of that…?
Besides your Magdalesque encouragement (really good stuff, thank you) one thing that hit home in a way that neither you nor SirFrancis may have intended was this quote:

So if that is a change in personality, I welcome it.”

See, I ask myself in JamesTheDark fashion about my brain chemistry. I wonder, is this altered personality the real me and my unbalanced self the dormant demon, or is this new and improved personality merely an artificial overlay of my own true barren soul? I hope to have Sir Francis’ conviction someday. In the meantime, I worry that I’m not really better, but I just feel better about getting worse…

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; there's no problem with a man wanting to hold doors for me as long as he doesn't mind me holding the occasional door for him.
And I do know a woman, family friend, who was in the army for a very long time and has some very scary scars and only left the Reserve because she got cancer which she has since beat the tar out of, but now she's a little too old to serve and still might go into remission. She enjoys her life and takes no crap from nobody. I've also seen female janitors, though they don't seem to enjoy their life so much. Trash collecting? Don't think so, but I bet it exists somewhere.
As for myself, no, I would not want to be drafted. I don't think there should be a draft at all and only those who want to serve should serve. And, you know, if there were to be one of those huge wars, someone has to stay here and make sure the country keeps running, right? Don't want those soldiers coming home to a big nothing. That's my excuse, anyway. That and I don't really want to kill anyone.
I should go to bed, I really should...

*edit* I am not going to enter into a discussion about medication because I could offend many people here. Let's say I use alternatives (homeopathy, not herbs, just so we're clear) and find them extremely effective and just leave it at that.

Hey over half the janitors at my current school and at least half the janitors at my former school were women...and guys I notice you're very underrepresented in the lunch preparer area, and the stay at home dads are thin on the ground...so lets get on that shall we?? Also, we're aren't allowed to sign up for selective service, but I don't know any women ( who aren't mothers of young children) who wouldn't sign up ...however I do believe the man should have to kill the spiders ( but that's just my phobia)

I see there is a discussion happening and I'm not in it. I guess I kinda am now.
Holding doors? I'll hold a door for anyone, male or female. Its a courtesy thing. But when I'm accomanying a woman somewhere, I open the door and walk in first, holding the door so she can enter. Been to way too many bad places. Became a habit.
Can anyone tell me why men and women rarely say what they are really thinking? I notice there is a great amount of restraint in my dealings with women. I admit it. Sometimes its good and sometimes its bad. The good part is that I tend to be bold when the time is not calling for boldness. The bad part is that I will communicate on only a surface level. It sucks, but it seems to leave less chance of pain later.
Did I just answer my own question or am I just talkin' out my butt as usual?

NVG, no, I do know what you are talking about regarding the things not said. I have become much more open in my dealings with females in the past few months...being blunt and to the point throws some people for a loop, let me tell you! I am just a bit tired of the game again, and don't feel like wasting the time dancing around a subject anymore. So, straight to the point; whatever happens will happen.

You should have him put them outside, not kill them. Spiders are very useful creatures. Flies, ants, and mosquitos, however, I will kill indiscriminately.

On the issue of the more physical labor jobs, I am sure there are women who do it, but it is not the norm, and I have never personally known a woman who genuinely wanted to make that her career. Most women I talk to, especially about gender equality, are into business, or engineering, or something like that. I agree on the food preparer, I have only seen one male do the job all through high school (there were a couple in my college cafeteria). I would give anything I have to be able to be a stay at home dad. Anything.

I would bet RIMG that you'd be an amazing stay at home dad. MisterG and I are trying to decide who's staying at home if I get pregnant. It'll probably be me because I can go back to my job with no damage to my career after a 5 year absence, but being in banking MisterG kind of has to keep on the track.

NV- see I'd be fine for the door opening thing, but I'm really open and blunt and I cannot count how many guys that has sent running in panic for the hills... so that might explain girls being less than open with guys, I know a lot of women who feel that guys don't want to know what they really think/feel.
For example I've had more than one guy stop dating me when I was honest with them about what I wanted ( like saying I didn't like the movie they picked or that I'd rather go to a different place for food)I wasn't rude I just didn't defer to their opinion. On guy even explained not wanting to date me by telling me I was too much like a guy and didn't flirt correctly or act girly enough. When pressed he said that beating him at games( especially trivial pursuit and the like) not letting him pick all the stuff we did on the date, and arguing politics and such with him was just not feminine.

MSG, you are the type of person I am looking for right now! Ok, I am not saying I want no say-so at all, but it is nice to have a blunt, honest conversation with a member of the opposite sex. Don't tell me what you think I want to hear, tell me what is on your mind. That's a wonderful thing!

I love spiders.
But I do admit to making husband do the yucky stuff like cleaning up dead things and squishing waterbugs .

Found on the Internets:
At long last... The Men's ultimate Guide to what a woman really means when
she says something. Pay close attention (there might be a quiz later).
• If she says, “You want,” what she really means is, “You want.”
• If she says, “We need,” what she really means is, “I want.”
• If she says, “It's your decision,” what she really means is, “The correct decision should be obvious by now.”
• If she says, “Do what you want,” what she really means is, “You'll pay for this later.”
• If she says, “We need to talk,” what she really means is, “I need to complain.”
• If she says, “Sure, go ahead,” what she really means is, “I don't want you to.”
• If she says, “I'm not upset,” what she really means is, “Of course I'm upset, you moron!”
• If she says, “You're...so manly,” what she really means is, “You need a shave and you sweat a lot.”
• If she says, “You're certainly attentive tonight,” what she really means is, “Is sex all you ever think about?.”
• If she says, “I'm not emotional! And I'm not overreacting!,” what she really means is, “I'm on my period.”
• If she says, “Be romantic, turn out the lights,” what she really means is, “I have flabby thighs.”
• If she says, “This kitchen is so inconvenient,” what she really means is, “I want a new house."
• If she says, “I want new curtains,” what she really means is, “and carpeting, and furniture, and wallpaper.”
• If she says, “I need wedding shoes,” what she really means is, “the other 40 pairs are the wrong shade of white.”
• If she says, “Hang the picture there,” what she really means is, “NO, I mean hang it there!.”
• If she says, “I heard a noise,” what she really means is, “I noticed you were almost asleep.”
• If she says, “Do you love me?” what she really means is, “I'm going to ask for something expensive.”
• If she says, “How much do you love me?” what she really means is, “I did something today you're really not going to like.”
• If she says, “I'll be ready in a minute,” what she really means is, “Kick off your shoes and find a good game on T.V.”
• If she says, “Is my butt fat?” what she really means is, “Tell me I'm beautiful.”
• If she says, “You have to learn to communicate,” what she really means is, “Just agree with me.”
• If she says, “Are you listening to me!?” what she really means is, [Too late, you're dead.].
• If she says, “I'm sorry.,” what she really means is, “You'll be sorry.”
• If she says, “Do you like this recipe?” what she really means is, “It's easy to fix, so you'd better get used to it.”
• If she says, “Was that the baby?” what she really means is, “Why don't you get out of bed and walk him until he goes to sleep.”
• If she says, “I'm not yelling!,” what she really means is, “Yes I am yelling because I think this is important.”
• If she says, “All we're going to buy is a soap dish,” what she really means is, “It goes without saying that we're stopping at the cosmetics department, the shoe department, I need to look at a few new pocket books, and OMIGOD those pink sheets would look great in the bedroom and did you bring your checkbook?.”

Thank god for women like MSG! I hate cutesy docile chicks that can't make up their minds let alone speak it. Gimme a woman that can tell me exactly what she wants and I'll show you a very happy (and slightly scary) smile.

Thank you JQ for the enlightening list of what is actually being said.

I have to say Rosie is one of the sexiest women ever. GND's got some guns that I can almost envy. Kinda sucks.

ADD: I'm out for the day folks. Hope it ain't so busy tomorrow. I miss everyone a bunch.

Glad to be of service. Lemme tell ya. That army gal's picture we were enjoying a few weeks back, was pretty, yes, but she's a doer. And them's that does, are mighty sexy.
Of course there are always exceptions (which leads me to a tangent imponderable):

*Attempting to UN-politicize the discussion.*

Spring-boarding off the feminist imponderable and the differently wired brains of ladies and gentlemen, what is the acceptable limit (or limits) when it comes to gender equality? Let me state that better, since the obvious answer would be absolute equality while recognizing differences. How much macho is acceptable for a woman and how nancy boy can a real man be? How's that for politically incorrect? I don't care about anyone taking a stand here. I am talking about preferences: yours.

HELL'S KITTEN

I ended up scrapping my long-ass post in favor of a shorter, space-saving one. Heh.

Re: Female President
Huh, I’m of a similar mind as JohnnyQuest… how peculiar
From a national standpoint, I don’t know what gender would have to do with running the country well, poorly, or in between. From a female standpoint, that’s a huge step, sure, great. Whatever. Still, it’s not like the rest of the government is gonna say “Oh, wow! Our very first Ms. President! We shall now throw off our partisan robes and agree to her every whim, for she shall surely make the nation a paradise!” It’s not just the President that has the power to change things, it’s the whole (majority) government that has to agree to change.

Yeah, as NVGhostRider said – a courtesy thing. I can accept that. I do that myself, when I’m feeling courteous. But when someone ahead of me opens the door and waits for me to go in first just because I’m a chick, it confuses and irks me some. There are a couple of guys at work who do that just out of habit, go’bless’em, but I naturally don’t expect it, so I end up waiting for them to go, and they wait for me and I still wait for them and they still wait for me and then I inch closer to the door just as they inch closer to the door, and we both stop and it’s back to the beginning of waiting. (Eventually, I just throw my elbow into their chest with extreme prejudice, knock ‘em down, and walk through the door over their body.)

Yes, Feminazis even annoy females. But the militant portion is the extreme, and speaking from a purely clinical perspective, extremes should generally be dropped from the data set as anomalous instances, not representative of the data.

There will never be perfect equality. Nor should there be.

[ /rantish ]

First of all, “most” is a very bad word to use in these sorts of discussions. There are broads working in just about every profession known to man, where it’s feasible and possible (e.g., generally speaking, chicks can’t be sperm donors). Just because you don’t see it immediately outside your little window, doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

Secondly, I have nothing but disdain for those who expect / demand special privileges in the name of equality, I don’t care who’s behind it, and I have absolute, venomous contempt for dames that feel entitled in this way.

Yes, there are differences between men and women, as can be pointed out by any standard 3-year old child. Disproving that was never the point of the “Feminist Movement.” The major idea was to bring about equal opportunity for women, to allow them the chance to enter the workforce and earn a living just as any man naturally would; judgment based on merit, ability and performance, not based on gender. {Completely edited out examples of facts and first-hand accounts of discrimination to save the scroll wheel on your mouse. This is how I show my love for you.}

Nah. It wasn’t aimed at hurting feelings, it was just my ever-present snarky attitude. I have a quick temper coupled with a low tolerance for certain things, so I generally try not to pull the trigger with so much haste and exuberance.

I generally say what I’m thinking, unless it’s going to be hurtful, in which case, I just take my time to rephrase it. There are, of course, times when appropriateness wins out over my … refreshing honesty. *snikker*

Yeah. That was my “shorter version.”
