Ooh! I have the perfect ponder!

Birthdays! Do you like them? Do you loathe them? Do you get annoyed at people who get annoyed at getting older and don't celebrate them? Or do you sympathise with them? Has forgetting a birthday ever ruined a relationship? Do you think it's a fuss over nothing?

EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot... FIRST!

I'm not overly fond of birhtdays, but they can be a chance to express how you feel to someone. And it's always good to feel remembered, like you all have done for me today.
I will say that I LOVE my kids birthdays .There's nothing like a child's birthday excitement.I love the pizza & ice crean parties and goodie bags & pin the tail on the donkey .

In my family (husband and kids), we are tending to birthday week celebrations since one day is not enough time to party with everyone and be specially the centre of attention.

Tho' sometimes we have to explain to the kids that adult parties often don't have goody bags.

Missed the whole last thread, so I'm making sure to get in this one.

Birthdays are a pretty interesting subject to me actually. I tend to try to avoid celebrating my own. Not because I care that I'm getting older or anything. It's just that I don't tend to like what other people like and they're going to want to celebrate the same way the do for everyone else. With like dinner and a party and boring junk like that. I'm not going to be bored out of my skull on my own birthday. So, I try my best to slide under the radar.

Being an attention whore at heart, I just LOVE being fussed over. I'll pretend it's my birthday just to get perks. Not really. But a part of me really wants to. There's nothing like getting something you've been wanting for a long time. Of course there's risk also. The disappointment of NOT getting what you wanted, boring guests, and so on. In the same way though, I love being able to make someone else's birthday special and memorable.

Birthdays...used to love them. All the cool presents and cake and getting older (never once had a birthday party though) but now they just seem like another day. The excitement faded, the presents get less cool, and I'm getting older, and don't have as much cake. I worked on my last birthday which sucked, but a pretty girl bought me some beef jerky as a present! I still haven't ate the nasty looking beef jerky but it's the thought that counts.

Hiya everyone!

I guess I like birthdays okay....I never really do a whole lot for mine, but it is always a good way to spend time with friends and family too. Oh, yeah and also persents!
I do get kinda annoyed at people who don't want to celebrate because they think they're getting old. Not akknowledging that you're a year older won't keep you from aging, and it's not like no one will notice that you're getting older if you just don't celebrate!

Hi all. I'm not even going to attempt to read the back log from when I was in Imponderable last. *shudders*

Birthdays? I don't mind celebrating them (mine or other folks) but I loathe working on 'em. Done it twice since I've been working and both times it sucked worse than NVG's goat's ass.

Am now grumpy at the thought that we no longer get a 'birthday holiday' at work. *grumpgrumpgrump* Miss that and the 'floating holidays' but they went the way of the 'sick bank.' It's all just PTO now, and you need a frickin' note from your doctor to call in sick. I'm 40+ and suddenly feel like I'm 12 and need a note from mommy. {/grump}

Actually I think I like fussing over family and friend's for their more than I do for mine. For me I just want a day to do as I like without worry or stress. If there's stress, it's not the right type of celebratin'.

mornin' Imponderables.

Hi Clementine. Fellow engineer here (EE). I just wanted to say that your comment about ineffecient elevator exiting in the last thread amused me a bit more than it probably should have. :)

Birthdays - I agree with LA29, as far as kids go. I like seeing my boys' smiling faces covered in cake and ice cream and see their joy at opening the shiny presents. As for myself, it doesn't matter to me one way or the other. It's a reason for a nice meal or sex and for someone to give me stuff I didn't have to pay for (unless it is from wifey, then it came out of the same money pool anyhow). I like Lewis Carroll's idea, let's celebrate unbirthdays, that way we can justify cake and ice cream year round

Birthdays? Normally I wiew them as just another normal day, although this year I seemed to let it affect me a bit (as was demonstrated by creating a pub thread based on it). With the exception of my 21st, I haven't really celebrated my birthday with people outside my immediate family since I was in primary school (so, not since I was 12 or thereabouts).

Not much else to say at the moment, except good morning to all those just waking up, and good night to all those going to bed.

I expect that those of you with first hand experience with pregnancy and childbirth might be at least a little inclined to agree with me.

A fanciful ideal would be to give all mothers a paid vacation day on the birthdays of each of their children. Twins earn two days, and so forth.

I concede that there's a problem with how wee bairns are to summon the means to throw parties for and gift their mothers. Maybe stick with celebrating birthdays for the person whose birthday it is until they are on their own? Dunno.

Good Morning, Everyone.

Well, after a night spent grumping over the wet t-shirt loss at the end of the last thread, I am back to face a beautiful, rather unseasonably warm Maryland morning.

Variable weather and too much coffee (is there such a thing?) equal one sniffly Mavourneen. My co-worker just threw a box of Kleenex across the room at me. And I was getting better, too!

I don't get irked at birthdays - but I do get irked at people who lie about their age. C'mon, it's just a number.
A girlfriend of mine will say something like "It's the 18th anniversary of her 21st year." Oh, please. You are 39. Embrace it.

RIMG- Where'd your great Jayne pic go? I think I like that better than the nuclear bomb - but maybe the bomb pic is how you feel today, so okay.

As to the wee bairns, I refer you to the common money pool that RIMG referred to.

I've been to more than one "kids" party where the adults in the background merely used it as an excuse to eat, drink and be merry. I have mixed feelings about that. I don't think alcohol should be excluded from the adult menu, however, I also don't think it's very adult to get bombed at a kid's party. For the record, that was back in the days when I was less adult in my adulthood.

BIG HUGS for the amazing Magda..now go check your email. LOL

As a corollary to our ponder about celebrating birthdays...What was your favorite birthday present??

Mine was the white gold and sapphire ring my daddy bought me for my 18th birthday:)Not so much for it's actual value, but for the fact that my dad spent so much time picking it out and had it engraved just for me with "count only the happy hours."

MSG, oddly enough, one of the most memorable birthday gifts I got was also a very destructive one. For my 16th birthday, I was given a 1967 Canadian Centennial .30-30 Wincchester rifle. It was my first "real" rifle that was mine and mine alone. I had been shooting since I was able to stand, but this was a milestone, if that makes any sense.

JQ, we guys may need to see that list for MSG...or are you going to not play fair and keep it for yourself?

SOOOOO cold!!! ( plus they've yet to fix the heater in my classroom so it's maybe 55-60 degrees inside the class)

EDIT: Just for giggles, are we talking butterscotch or chocolate pudding?
Also, who would win? The tough as nails (sort of) soccer mom or the tough as nails (sort of)Hippie? Maybe I should go to Dublin to find out...hmmm.

I violently dislike you right now. We went from 70s yesterday to 30s today.

Yeah, well I violently dislike you right now, because ours won't drop out of the 60s, even with a giant impending storm.
