Indeed, Australia is a big damn island, except on some of those warped maps, like the ones where Canada is smaller than the USA.

Not sure, there are examples in the series of it being both ways up. This is just the way that was decided upon by the people putting together the patch for us con goers.

oooooooh - it must be my bedtime coz the imponderers are all waking up and getting on line!!

Hello Ged!! I do not see enough of you anymore!! How are you? How's Texas treating you?

Awwwww... well you can just... ah... I don't know DTH - if it were up to me I'd let you go home early then!

Hello my wonderful friend Mavourneen! I wouldn't wish to live in another country - Australia is the shiniest place on Earth! But I do wish there were portals and transporters readily available... things like that! How cool would it be to be an international nanny - I could babysit the Tidbit one night - my neices and nephews the next night and LA's Dylan and Sean at the weekend!!

Morning, ponderers!

I know this will be laughed at by those of you in the really cold places, but we hit 20F last night...with lots of wind, so it was a cutting cold. It took the house heater and three quilts to keep me warm. And I did NOT want to get out of bed this morning. Brr!

NavySeils....I....wow! Lots of words in one post! Shiny!

Rhyianan, welcome! Glad to see you here, and hope you decide to stick around.

Qing ren, I am pretty sure you are gone by now, but anyway! Hope to catch up with you again!

RIMG...hmm. I had not thought of using that line...no, on second thought I don't think I'll start, either! Thank you for that, though...it did make me laugh!

And thank you, LA29! Originality is a plus!

So, Australia is a BDI...hmm. Good to know!

Morning to all I missed! Hugs all around on this cold morning.

The star in the patch is the correct way for the 76th. Like Nico said, it was shown both ways in the series, and this is the one we ended up using.

Ok, coffee....I know there's coffee around here somewhere...

Hey RIMG!! Shiny! I've got others working on the portal theory... you and LA working on a transporter... we should get it right eventually - and if not then I will have to jump on a plane and fly to Atlanta for the start of D*C in 265 days!!

Oh - I just emailed you on your home address, then I read your email from your work address - so I hope that makes sense to you!! Thanks you!

"Did he just go crazy and fall asleep?"

With no hope of catching up on the rest of the thread, I will pause at this point to pipe up, as there be a personal matter I can relate to. In other words I read as much as I could before I had to spout off…

But first:

So, if I see someone forget their wallet I would most likely want to stick it to them that they should be more attentive next time.

Oh, now Zeek, don’t be like that…Now don’t get me wrong, I have little patience for dodoism in all its forms. But I’m also as likely as any to slip into it on occasion. When that does happen though, I don’t expect aid but won’t reject it either, and depending how helpless and hopeless I am at the time might even solicit said aid. All that is preamble. I don’t think that’s really what we’re talking about here. I think we’re just saying Jeez, here’s an opportunity to do something nice for someone just because it’s a nice thing to do. If two of us are vying for the same parking space, is it necessary for me to be the one to have it? I think not. If some poor sap falls down while crossing the street, I don’t care if he’s rich or poor, young or old, healthy or lame; I stop to help him up. He might have the wherewithal to right himself, and I’m not obligated to stop and help. But that’s not the issue. It’s just a niceness within my reach that I choose to do. Please tell me you would not reject an outstretched hand. It’s sad not to need anyone.

On to the main attraction:

Part, the First –
Why do co-workers think it's a good idea to engage in "romantic" relationships with one another? I guess I can understand it if it's a big company and they work in completely different / separate departments.... But when it's someone you often work with and often times has to give you direction...? How does that seem like a good idea?

Quote:

Originally posted by Tristan, rearranged by JonnyQuest:
As far as co-worker attractions/relationships, I see that as laziness on the part of the people involved. Ok, maybe not always, because there may be the chance that they were meant to be together, but still...

There is an old saying my stepfather taught me; Don't get your sex and paycheck at the same place. I have tried to live by that, and so far it has worked out quite well. Considering the places I have worked, that is not saying a lot, though.

Quote:

Originally posted by Zeek:
I find it easy enough to start feeling closer to people you see all the time. I mean I sorta view my co-workers as friends until I realize I know next to nothing about them outside of work. None of them are my age really. So, that may be all that is keeping me from developing romantic feelingses.

Quote:

Originally posted by ChrisMoorhead:
Lack of social environment outside of work to find someone else. People are so desperate to hook up these days, and if they don't have an outlet outside of work, or they're very unsuccessful outside of work, then eventually it will manifest there due to lack of choices.

If neither of those situation applies, then it's probably because they're stupid and haven't thought through the negative consequences, or they're looking for sex and really don't care about the negative consequences.

Hmm. I don’t’ know that anyone involved considers whether it’s a good idea or thinks about consequences when becoming involved at work anymore than the would under any other circumstance. And I am not at all sure there should be any “extra” considerations regarding the relationship. Adjustments may need to be made in the workplace, but that is something else. I’m glad you qualified your statement, Tristan. Toni, MsQ, and I met at work and still work in the same office almost twenty years later. The secret? Work is work, and life is something else. We have always felt we were meant to be together. How these situations arise, or fail to, has been gone over pretty well by my colleagues.

Part, the Second –
Quote:

Hell's Kitten:
Why do some guys (read: a good number that I've encountered) want to be your friend only as long as they think there's a chance for sex?

Quote:

Tristan:
I may not be the best one to answer this...I am a firm believer that men and women can be friends without the spectre of sex hanging around.

Quote:

Zeek:
Those guys aren't your friend. They're just being friendly because they believe it's a good way to get a shot at having sex with you. It's not that guys can't be friends without thinking about sex. It's that guys who are only thinking about sex think being a friendly might get them a foot in the door.

Quote:

ChrisMoorhead:
That's just another way of asking "Why do most guys just want sex?", irregardless of bring friends with you. The being friends part is just a way some (and probably less experienced) guys figure that they can get close to you in order to make the jump from friend to lover. Now as to why guys just want sex: biology, and because women only say no with words. The culture of womanhood in America is one of skimpy outfits, bathing suits, and general aesthetics. HK, you're a model, right? How could you possibly wonder why men seek you out for sex? The very vocation of modeling is making yourself more physically appealing, and if you're going through the effort to be appealing, then on a primal level of the mind, you're just attracting as many mates as possible. Then you wonder why they show up wanting sex?

Even if you weren't a model, that's the standard set by other women who are. Psychologically speaking, men have Maxim, Playboy, Stuff, and every other shitheaded "men's" magazine shoved in their face on a daily basis. The women in those things set an unfortunate precedence for the rest of their gender, no matter how much they think they're "empowering" themselves by doing it. I've talked in great length about this before.

Many men (read: boys in bodies too mature for them to handle themselves appropriately (take it with the pun or without, you choice), will do whatever it takes to get into your…business. If that involves pretending to be your friend, so be it. Sadly it appears you are a magnet for these fools. Although I would probably have it expressed differently, but CMH has fleshed out your appeal. (Didn’t know you were a professional model, HK.) I agree with Tristan that not all of us are like that, but I will state that we are in the minority. And Zeek’s point that friends in fact can have sex thoughts is correct too; it’s possible for things to graduate as well as deteriorate. I mean sometimes things “happen”.

Part, the Third –
Quote:

Hell's Kitten:
Which is built upon the first two, how do I let a co-worker know that there is absolutely no chance whatsoever of having any kind of outside-of-work non-co-worker relationship with me?
I'm very stupid when it comes to subtlety, so I think this "crush" has been going on for a looooong time, and only recently have I figured it out (with the help of a friend pointing out the obvious to me). Since I've gotten this new perspective, I've been... kinda... distant, and am very aware that I'm treating him differently. I just naturally want to discourage any kind of romantic notions before he develops them more and I have to crush his soul.

Men confound me some. Help? Advice?
Run away with me?

Quote:

Tristan:
Now, knowing what I know of you so far (granted, it's only your online persona), I do not think you would have any problem telling someone that you are not interested in a romantic tryst. You can get quite poetic in your language, so it should leave no doubt in the air.

Other than being completely out of order (not anymore, jq), I hope that helps a little bit.
Don't feel bad. Y'all women-folk confound us men all the time. It's nice to hear the opposite is true, too.

Have we figured out where we are running too?

Quote:

Zeek:
Can't help you too much with this one. Aside from flat out rejection, some guys are capable of reading any little sign of interest as meaning the girl has feelings. You can avoid him like the plague, but eventually you'll still probably do something to keep him thinking he has a shot. The real problem is that it sounds like he isn't acting on this crush much. You can't really reject a guy if he never actually makes a move. Only other thing you can do is talk to him a lot about other guys you're interested in. It's a subtle hint that you're not even considering him in that category.

Quote:

ChrisMoorhead:
Clothesline him. No wait, he might think you're being playful. Just go ahead and crush him. Be blunt, even harsh if you have to, just don't make it public.

I’m surprised you and CMH haven’t hooked up yet. Maybe you both are still circling one another. Anyway, be Hell’s Kitten. It’s who you are. Is subtlety what’s called for here? Well if you go back and check the threads, you’ll find quite a bit of type spent on Laurelyn’s Brick Theory (KelKhil’s wife), when we were trying to explain subtle hints to NVG. Guys do not pick up on subtle. You can try to be nice, but he’ll never get it. His “hope” will drown out your soft spoken words. Not saying this will be easy to do, but sounds like it needs doing and this is the way. If you do end up crushing his soul, can I have it? I’m thirsty, and you have more than you need already. Your collection is all vintage and you only sip from them on special occasions. I binge. And purge. I love to purge. Bwahahahahahahaha!

But dammit. Zeek’s got me to thinking now. If he’s just crushing on you and not rushing, would it be fair to drain him of his life’s blood? I mean if you didn’t notice it on your own, it’s not annoying you. If you’re trying to protect him from your inner vamp, crushing his soul sounds kinda counter productive. What’s the real scoop? Maybe you should invent a fake love interest and he’ll run scampering for the hills…

HELL'S KITTEN

Yay! Munchies for NZ!

And Madga owes me a brownie, too. I hope she doesn't run out.

I have decided on my way home tonight: the US browncoats gather in a specific location, fly off to Ireland to grab DesktopHippie, curve around a bit to pick up VerseExplorer, and then all land at Madga's doorstep. So to speak. Then it's just a stone's throw to New Zealand and their funny penguins tromping through the rain forest to reach the fjord! I have a picture of that, by the way.

I have had the week from hell. HELL. and just got home, so don't mind this post. Except for the running away plan. That stays. And the brownies. And. Um. The munchies. Yeah. Kay. Bye.
