Oh, er, yeah, see... your threads get too long and involved for me to sift through or follow with any efficiency. I was just kinda waiting until y'all had the details hammered out and posted one big damn summary for the attention challenged such as myself. Um, having said that, I'd very much like to join. I just don't have the time to work on something now. I hope to be more organized at a later date.

Nightmare Before Christmas! I forgot that one, too! I am going to have to re-think my choice...seems kinda lame against all these others...
Since you mentioned it, I agree with the "lame" assessment. *giggle*

And thank you for the definition of kanji. Are we using it incorrectly when talking of the Serenity-writing?
Eee, jeez, I was hoping no one would read that. I'm a, um, bit of a linguistics fetishist. And I'll stop there and thank you for avoiding the obvious jokes. I just love languages, especially ones so far removed from English. 平静 is Chinese or Chinese characters or simplified Chinese, but not "Chinese kanji." It's improper from the standpoint of Chinese, and redundant from the standpoint of Japanese. At least, that's my understanding, and I could be completely wrong. (disclaimers are part of my job)

Yep, knitting is evil. I have a hat that I started in the summer of '96 that is still not done...
HA! Now I don't feel so bad. That made me laugh... It took me about a year to finish my Slytherin (stop laughing) scarf. And now, since it took me so frakkin' long, I'm too scared to wear it lest I damage it.

Hello RMMC:

Bell Book and Candle is $18.99 at Amazon if you can not find it at Blockbuster. I recorded mine on VHS years ago. I guess I should break down and get it on DVD.

Yep! I had one as a pet! And it hated me! Ever hear those fs yell? Good lord. And that mouse? I won't get into the whys about the situation, but it fit underneath the door to escape into my living room. And the "underneath the door" bit was about 1/4" (63.5mm for you metric types) in height. That's itty bitty, yet the mouse made it through. Couldn't stand up to my mighty fly-swatter, though. Nossir. I still laugh outloud when I think of that entire fiasco. Hilarity. Maybe one day I'll tell you everything.........

The one time I knitted it took me about that long to make a Doctor Who scarf. The sucker's about 20 feet long. It now moonlights as either a funky afghan or a long fuzzy rope.

*all in unison* Hi Sara!

I've got yarn in all kinds of places. Several plastic storage boxes (full) my cedar chest, two yarn bags and my ottoman.

Stop snickering! If it were alcohol I was stashing, you'd be plenty worried!

Ah. I've been crocheting since I was four. I wanted to make the little bookworm bookmarks that my grandmother made so she gave me some yarn and let me loose. And I made one. She asked me how I did it and I told her. She stared at me and said, "that shouldn't have worked," then she taught me how to do it correctly and I've been off and crocheting ever since.

To me knitting was invented by an ancestor of the sadist who came up with mammograms. (Hey! Let's stick a sensitive portion of your anatomy up here and squash it between these two plates to see if you've got a tumor and hopefully don't rupture whatever it is in the process! I want the sadist who came up with this to put his balls up on that plate.)

JAMESTHEDARK

I've never had a pet commit suicide, but I did have a really damn stupid cat.

Here's the story. Years ago, when my father had taken a break from long-haul trucking and made a go at running a bottle-exchange, a stray began to show up in the building. Dad left out food for the little mongrel, and eventually, it crawled out from under the forklift where it was hiding, and he brought him home. We named him Bud, and take a guess why.
Now, his emaciation must have shriveled his brain, because Bud was all manner of stupid. Uncoordinated, no common sense, and not a wit to rub against another. He'd lay on the floor, see one of us coming, and vault straight into a wall. He'd take flying leaps toward window-sills and either undershoot, right into the aforementioned wall, or overshoot and brain himself on the glass. And, dumbest of all, he'd pick fights with things that anybody but a Chav would know better than to scuffle with.
That was what killed him. Our oldest purebred dog, Journey, was a hellion before he was neutered. Another, named Misty, had just dropped a litter of puppies, and was in 'feral mother' mode. Bud decided to enter through the back door (which is exclusively dog territory), and ran into Misty. Bud, being stupid, gives Misty a swat. Misty, being a pissed off mother, bites Bud. Journey joins the fray, and in twenty seconds, Bud's dead, and almost torn in half.
Ye su, that cat was stupid.

After that, we stopped keeping cats around the house. Journey's still here, although he's clipped and a fairly old dog, now. Misty could be dead for all I know (she was such a cow). Before Bud, every animal we had died on the road, even one of our hamsters. Seriously.

--------------
I ain't lookin' for help from on high. That's a damn long wait for a train don't come.

Evening, all.
Boy, have I missed this place today...

Just popping in real quick to answer a few posts...

HK, several things...
As for the 76th, if you just want to post in the Roll Call thread, we can add you to the webpage. And part of the reason for the threads is so everyone can have input...we would love to hear everyone's!
And thank you for the kanji thing. Seriously. I am the same way when it comes to language, except my obsession is aimed at the Celtic tongues. I even learned some odd twists of Welsh along with some Irish Gaeilge. So, not an odd interest.
Also glad to hear you had a flying squirrel, too. And yes, I had been startled out of a sound sleep a few times by that escape artist.

JTD, the beginning of the cat story made me laugh, but the part of Bud's demise sobered me up. I am sorry about that.

I am off for the night, so hello and goodbye to those I missed!

Oh, qing ren, consider this a ninja kiss!

Until tomorrow!

The Imponderable thread had some great giggles today. You all are hi-larious!

I do like The Ref, Usual Suspects, and Bell, Book, and Candle. I'm a fan of Kevin Spacey and Denis Leary, and I wanted to be Kim Novak when I was young. Of course I was not tall, thin, and blonde, but I did have dreams that I would be some day. I also liked that she left Hollywood at the height of her career in 1966, and she moved up to Big Sur.

Zeek, I'm ready to see Black Christmas. I'd love to see Serenity decorated with Christmas trimmings. You know Kaylee would put things up for the Holidays.

JTD, small animals do have a way of annoying dogs especially new mothers. I usually have a child that begs to take a class pet home over the summer. Dogs have usually been the ones to end their lives.

Morning, everyone.

The site being down yesterday was frustrating! Oh, well. Here's to a better, more stable day.

*raises coffee cup*

Go welcome the new guy under the Brand New Fan thread. Gotta love peeps when they are new and shiny.

I tried to post yesterday that my fav Christmas movie is actually a special - one of those Rankin/Bass stop motion photography shows from the 70's called "Santa Claus is coming to Town" - it's the one with the BurgerMeister.

And, knitting isn't evil. Its misunderstood. I learned to knit a long time ago as something to do with my hands during dialysis. Can't say I'm very good, but you develop a rhythm and its very Zen.

Morning, Mav!
I'll second that! *raises hi own coffee mug*

I welcomed the new guy. It's good to see there is still enthusiasm, and still people discovering this lovely show! That made my day!

Ah, I loved all those type of movies! I can never remember the names of them, though.

Mav, I think the same way of making mail that you do in knitting. Very relaxing and it frees up the mind to do other things while your hands are busy.

Oh, one thing I like about the Xmas season is the flavored coffee beans. Today, we are drinking a chocolate candy-cane coffee! Time to go get some more before it all goes away!

Morning all:) HUGS
NV you have my opinion via email so I won't restate. This is going to be one very very busy day of craziness. Yet another no sub available moment has put all hands on deck and I'm having to cover another teacher's classes again today. So I may or may not be around

HUGS CMH yes paperwork is an invention of the devil and it bites. You should see how much ( or rather , based on how sick it made you, shouldn't) paper work We do for special ed kids.

Speaking of which, back to writing the 8 page legal document ( which must be written for every special ed kid once a year) for the meeting. Hopefull I'll be back soon.

Too damn much. Psych-tests, personality evaluation, lie detector, D-LAB, decoding, contract negotiation, etc. They'd have me sit in a static room for an hour, then rush me to the next test and ask me general military knowledge questions along the way (General orders, average muzzle velocities, etc.). It was seriously asinine, but I know they meant it to be that way. I've never talked to anyone who was in the same unique situation that I'm in, but if I did I'm sure it would have been exactly the same.

RMMC: That's ridiculous that you have to pick between preferable hours and preferable work. I had to work holidays too a while back, but it didn't matter to me because my family doesn't do holidays together. I was just happy to get pay and a half or double pay (Or sometimes, double overtime). But I still would never choose office work over harsh hours, personally. Biggest fear military wise is that I get a debilitating injury and wind up a chairborne ranger.

CMH- at least they didn't make you take the MMPI. So it could have been worse . ( should explain that MMPI is Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory- it's a comprehensive test to detect all personality attributes, but it take about 6 hours)

Of course this makes me think of the Emo Phillips comedy bit about him being screened by a psychologist and he's given a chocolate bunny and the psychologist tells him if he'd bitten off the feet first then he had an inferiority complex, if he'd bitten the head first he'd have an superiority complex and Emo says " what does it mean when you bite off the eyes and scream Stop Staring at ME." and the psychologist replies " it means you have tendancies toward self destruction." Emo asks, " what do you reccomend?" The therapist says, " Go for it."

Thanks LA I could use a good rest of the day. As it stands, a sub job didn't fill so I lost my prep to cover a teachers class, we had a fire drill during my severe behavior group and they acted like maniacs/monsters and were a pain to get out of the building, plus other teachers giving me the beady eyed can't you control them look was fun, then all this ends and I start to sit down for my 25 min, YES 25 min lunch, when a kid comes in and needs me to read his test to him. So I got a 7 min lunch...OK rant over , sorry I am just getting a bit irritated that our district pays so poorly that we have no subs and this happens constantly.

Anyway, so what are we pondering today? I had a completely silly one. What is your favorite indulgence? ( can be food, time to your self, foot massage, etc. Anything you don't normally do that makes you feel all self indulgent.)

Mine is bubble baths. I have tons of different ones and I love to sit in a hot foamy tub for 30 or so minutes and read a book.

Why'd you have to add that "Anything you don't normally do" part? Now I feel totally self indulgent. I can't think of anything that makes me feel self indulgent that I don't do normally. lol

I'll go with "fly to vegas". I've only done that twice so that's not something I do normaly.

MSG, I offer :hugs: and a bubble-bath to ease your woes.

Favorite indulgence....hmm...mine is usually food-related, so I would have to say going out to dinner. I don't do it too terribly often, so I hope that counts.

Zeek, I missed saying afternoon to you...I apologize for that oversight. You may not want to be at work, but at least you have us to keep you company.

Mircea, good afternoon to you as well! Hand-shredding? Nuh-uh! We have a power-shredder here!

Rhyianan, stay in your mind! It's safer there, trust me!
It will be ok.

Mircea, once y'all get a new shredder, you'll have to put the temp through it for poetic justice...just consider it a really small engine.

Oh if I can just get through this week. But at least I am all but done with my Christmas shopping. I will be done on Friday when I pick up the last 4 things from FYE.

Tristan- for me, take out for one of the decent restaurants (like Bancock Thai), a hot bubble bath, comfy sweats and soft socks, and a nice dvd can fix any problem ever:)

NVGHOSTRIDER

Hi folks. I just avoided five accidents and endured the shitty parts of folks who don't know how to drie. This is apparently my fault as they all gave me dirty looks, the finger, or both.

I transported a client to Fernley and was already not in the best of moods. On my way out I decided to hang out the Pawn shop and see what I could find in case some other disagreeable person wanted to cop a 'tude.

So after hangin' out for a few minutes I calmed down and got a good deal on .45ACP ($44.00 for 250 rounds).

I feel a little better now. I'm out for a day or so. Figure I'll finish my last orders for the year and reward my hard work this weekend with a new pistola (MONICA will be coming home) and a trip to the gun show in Reno. Thanks for the help everyone. I'll be gettin' that dang SD card so's I can post pics of MONICA and the new ink. Goodnight!

I was just happy to get pay and a half or double pay (Or sometimes, double overtime). But I still would never choose office work over harsh hours, personally. Biggest fear military wise is that I get a debilitating injury and wind up a chairborne ranger.

Well I've got over 20+ years where I work, which is a hospital. At the time I started working, hospitals paid the best for non-tech jobs (over twice what other kids my age were making using that phrase "would you like fries with that,") and had fantastic benefits.

I worked afternoons (which paid shift differential) weekends and holidays (holiday pay was higher) and there was time and a half for overtime. Not bad when you're fresh out of high school.

The job I had...the technical term is phlebotomist. Basically I was a hospital vampire and stuck folks for blood tests. When I got that job, no one had ever heard of AIDS. That cropped up while I had that job. Add to that one of my regular floors was substance abuse (both alcohol and drugs) made for an interesting time. I liked the patients. Loathed the doctors. Was okay for the times of work being a night owl, but I had some friends I hadn't been able to see in a year due to my work schedule. When AIDS showed up, it kinda tipped the balance and I decided that perhaps an office job would be a long-term smarter idea. And did I mention I'm a bit of a klutz? I really didn't want to risk a needle exposure and I was klutzy enough to make this a very viable concern.

I'll keep up good thoughts for your safety in your upcoming deployment.

Hmmm...fav indulgence. I've got a foodie one and a non-foodie one. Love prime rib and sitting in a puddle of sunshine and reading.

*hugs* to MsG, RIMG and NVG. Hope things go better for ya'll.

Mine's gotta be real ice-cream. Usually I only eat the skim milk kind with like half the fat or something, but the normal kind is so much better... And then chocolate is always a good one too...sorry, but I love to eat!

Oh, yeah, and I can't believe that so many of you guys don't like to knit! I love it, it's so relaxaing when you get into the pattern of it. However, I also try not to do the difficult stuff such as attempting to do purl stitches....

MAGDALENA

"No power in the 'verse can stop me!"

I just have a few minutes to pop in and say hello!! So... "hello!"

NVG - I haven't seen you for ages!! How are you HOney? It sounds like you have a shiny time ahead - enjoy it and enjoy Monica!!

Hey RIMG - huge hugs Jimi-bear and I think it's about 260 days until I get to give you some hugs for real!! You are one awesome guy!!

HK... why did I know that you were laughing at the fish who's eyes just dropped out of it's little head...? Hmmmmmm... well, maybe because I was laughing so hard too!! Sorry I just had this image of a fish swimming around going "oooh look what's that? Oh darn...! I hate when that happens... Gorramnit, I can't even feel where my eyes landed coz I don't have hands..."

Hey Qing ren thank you! It's shiny to get on here at all... you've got mail by the way

Hey everyone else!! Miss you all and cannot wait for the aforementioned greater access! I miss ponderin' the imponderable with y'all! Which reminds me...

I adore hot bubble baths too MsG - one of my prime delights is to just lie in a big, bubbly, steaming tub of fragrant water, but since I destroyed a favourite book reading it in the tub (and it slipping from my relaxed fingers) I have gone for the relaxing music and a few candles to just lie back and enjoy! *sigh*

Of course - throw a few more candles and the right man into the mix and I'd give that scene from 'Bull Durham' a shot too...

Also - why is it that take away always looks so much better in movies where people sit cross legged on the floor and feed each other with their chop-sticks? When ever I try to do that I end up with something dark and oily dripped down my front... and it is never sexy or relaxing at all...

Yipes. *Orders a bubblebath with a couple of Jayne-clones to scrub MsG's back, bring her food and drinks while soaking in the bubble bath, etc. Also digs for the softest comfyest socks on the planet and hands them to MsG*

Sorry to hear about your day. I agree, it's *so* much fun when you're grabbed at the last minute to fill in when a sub can't make it/someone has to go out sick and "well, you've got a free prep, so howabout filling in?" moments.

As for IEPs... this is why I give everyone who asks me "Why don't you go into Special Education?" the evilest of evil eyes. *genuflects in awe* IEPs and ISPED is the work of evil purplebellied alliance types. *shudder*

I think my favorite weekend indulgence is sleeping (a.k.a. napping when ever the heck I feel like it). Best indulgence I can think of right now.

Zeek: I hear ya. Went to a 2-day workshop that I was told by someone that I had to go to today. Unfortunately, today I was at the end of nerves and not the best person in the room. Then at the last hour of the workshop, I was told "Oh, you don't have to be here." *blink* *blink*
*double checks the rest of the posting* Going to 'Vegas again would be an indulgence *sigh* maybe next year for me. (I just know I need to get off these tiny gorramn rocks in the middle of the ocean sometime in the next year when work is on break.)

NVG: *hug* Yikes. (But at least you were able to get a cool "toy" today. )

Micrea: Ooh...game shop...didn't think of that. *ponders a moment* Guess it's not as much of an indulgence anymore because I've fallen off the gaming (again). But I think hand-shredding would be extremely soothing today -- mindless bits of tearing things into confetti, yet it's a useful stress relief.

Rhyianan: G'luck with the tests. Try to take a couple of study sessions somewhere with a nice scenic view of nature...I've had easily stressed students tell me that it helps at times calm and reclaim the mind.

RMMC: *wave*

LA: Hope the space monkeys weren't too wound up when you took them for capture-takng with Santa.

HK: *snicker* Yarn whore? *giggle* I can relate. Although, right now I only have three pending projects and only one is knitting-related.

RIMG: *HUGS* (Just because) and *HUGS* 'cause you look like you need it while the boys are gone.

Oh...and RIMG, JPS, and Tristan -- not fair! Talking about a microbrew for D*C, and I can't go since work will have just started for the year! *pout*

Tristan: *Hugs*

Magda: MAGDA!!! *hugs* Miss seeing you online...I think I'm going to give up what passes for a social life for now. I'm ready for the Christmas Break right now thankyouverymuch.

Okay, this is waaayy too long, but with my day in the past 41 hours, I needed to come on and say "Hi" and probably find the container of the "froofy" caffine drink I concocted last time I visited the pub.

(Thank Buddha that the workday's over.)
*wave*

'neko.

The only real indulgence I can think of, off the top of my head, are the scaldingly hot baths I take. Water so hot one could possibly make soup in it. Literally, a half hour of finally being at the right temperature for my liking. The only part which sucks is the having to get out and be exposed to the cold, cold air.

If you refer to something I do infrequently, going out with Tony and the Dans is something I greatly enjoy, but almost never can do, because of the shitheel schedules we all seem to have.

At least, I can proudly say, my own set of exams are over. Nothing to do for the next eighteen days but lay about the house, annoy my mother, and eat until I explode in a font of turkey and eggnog.

Ahhhhh. Eggnog...
