I happened to hop in and JQ's stating something about "unwashed barbarian" caught my eye. Don't know why, it just did.

On the name thing. I am a bit reluctant to divulge the name my great, great aunt gave me, but since none of ya live in my community, it ain't so bad.
She named me "Kedu". It means ground hog or rock chuck in Paiute. I guess the way I'd crawl and peek my head up every so often was the reason why she gave it to me. The cultural reprocussion is the little kids makin' fun of your soft sides and big front teeth. Still haven't lived down alot of stuff from kindergarden.
I don't have an adult name. Nobody ever gave me one. But if I'm stuck with Kedu, I guess thats okay.

Dunno, NVG, but in my head you do look a little like Conan (not Arnie, the comic book version). Me, being of Germanic stock, I like being an unwashed barbarian!

So, when I'm in my cube and I pop my head up over the wall, I'm "Kedu-ing"? Shiny! Yeah, well, my middle name is Harold and let me tell you something, that's a secret you just didn't let out in my day. Might as well hand 'em blasting caps and TNT. "Peter" as a first name had all sorts of "fun" written all over it too. Those could actually be funny sometimes. but "Harold?". Yuck.

Who is allowed to give you an adult name? Sounds like a heck of an oversight...!

And I've been meaning to say hang in there with all the GND stuff. Sounds like I've missed out on a few developments. But I think about ya a lot, fella. Shipping you some good thoughts, man.

"Bugs?" heheheheheheheheh!!

Hello everyone, and happy Friday!! *waves*
Wow, I'm just gone for school and already the thread is filled up!
How would I like to die? Probably in a cool way. Not in like a boring way that everyone dies...I wouldn't want to die from some disease either. Maybe like, falling from the Grand Canyon...it would be pretty fun too until you hit the ground.

Ooh, and I love thinking of baby names!
For a girl I like Arianna, Kelsey, or Monica.
For a boy, I love the Irish names like Owen and Liam, and Luke.

Hey I almost fell into the Grand Canyon when I was 18 months. My mom propped me up on the edge wall at the top ( which has no railing) and for some reason ( which she still cannot fathom) when my dad suggested they trade places and put him in the pic, she walked away leaving my little 18 month old self standing unattended on the edge of a mile deep pit. My dad turned white, threw the camera down and raced to me and luckily nothing happened, but we still tease my mom about that:)

Ok have to go tutor now ...sigh

Ah, the joys of being on the East Coast and arriving to work early! My weekend is here!

Have a good one, all. More Christmas bustling, and Husband is seriously jonesing to adopt a dog.

I like the name Kedu, NV. I like the thought behind it. Besides, now I know I was born on Kedu's Day!

I hated my name as a child (Maura) - I've been called everything from Maurice to Maureen to Moron but now I treasure my name because there are so few Mauras in this country.

Have a Great Weekend. See you Monday.

Might as well take the opportunity to say happy weekend to all as well.

Great seeing you Neko. Please post more often.

Tristan, NVG, Peguin, (um, where's RIMG today?), Traveler...people will get pissed for not being included on this list but I'm working strictly from memory here...ASOFT, DTH, PR, LA29, VX (am I the only one left that calls you that?), MAGDA! *huggles*, CMH, MsG, of course, and HK. There are a lot more of you out there, but that's who I remember from the last couple of threads anyway. And Kelkhil and Nico not frequently here but a pair of dandies at the Pub. (Get well Kelkhil and stay well Nico!)

JQ signing off.

DTH - I like the Celtic theme you seem to be going with. I always thought Guinevere was a beautiful female name, although I for some reason despise the shortened version, "Gwen". I also like Lewellyn, even though that's more of a Welsh male name...

But from your list I definitely like Cliona for female and Dara or Cian for male.

Did I ever mention that I have a friend who named his firstborn "Serenity"? I thought that was cool.

The parents that did this should be shot. That is so completely wrong. I realize that it was probably meant as a joke, but no kid deserves that kind of treatment. Not only that, but to post it on the internet is just screaming for social services to do something.

Sorry for the rant, but seeing kids mistreated really bothers me.

I really miss a lot now that they won't allow us to use our office computers for personal reasons. It is not that they think we are watching porn or wasting time. They are just afraid of spam. I never got spam at work. I think we must have a really good spam protector in our system. But I know people who have gotten it. It seems spam will always find a way.

So MSG could not get into a Pagan site. So much for freedom of religion. When Alexander the Great conquered the known world the Greeks considered any religion other than there own gods as Pagan. The Hebrews had a hard time after that. The Romans were even more tolerant then the Greeks. Well for a while. Than the hit the fan after several rebellions.

But this country claims to be tolerant of others and yet the word cult is a dirty word.

Just me ranting again.

Mav - I actually like the name Maura! I'm usually very fond of any name that's not very common too.

JQ- Heh, that's a very elaborate goodbye there..

Traveler - I really don't think that it's just cult sites that they're trying to block at schools, because there are so many sites that are blocked that really shouldn't be. I think that they're just trying to keep people from doing things not relating to school, but then not doing the best job of it...Far too many times I've tried to go to a site to get information, and then that lousy "proxy" screen comes up...

I can see they are over cautious in order to play it safe. But I have known people of other faiths that would be considered a cult and they are the nicest and warmest people on Earth. It just seems to me that the words cult and pagan have had such a bad connotation.

Not being a Christian myself, I believe I fall into the pagan catagory. I do believe Jesus was one hell of a very nice guy. I just believe that God created everything and that means we are all the sons and daughters of God. That is what I preceive from reading about Jesus. Of course that is my opinion and I don't expect anyone to share it.

Hello lovely Traveler I thought that Pagan's in this day and age were those who followed the Pagan religion of understanding and to some degree worshipping the earth and the seasons, the ebb and flow of the natural world - though in Medieval tradition you would indeed be a Pagan... you'd also be burned at the stake so thank goodness we're not medieval in our attitudes hey?

As a Christian I think Jesus was one heck of a guy too of course!! so we do have something in common there too!

I didn't get to ponder the name thing MsG I think I have mentioned before that I have always loved the name Laura, or Helena (Hel-ay-nah) which is a family name and from the German line of women on my mothers side... I also love the names Siobhian (Sha-vorn), Niamh (Neeve) and, like James I adore the names Chloe and Phoebe - actually I have a friend who's daughters are named just that! Moira/Maura, Isobelle/Isobella and Kaylee are on my current list too!!

For boys I like the classic names that make good nick names and also work for a boy or a man - like Thomas (yes... I know a gorgeous boy called Thomas), Johnathon, Nicholas, Christopher or Jackson or Samuel - these last two have family connections too of course... I also love the name Martin and as that is my mother's maiden name it is my nephew, Joshua's, middle name. (Jackson is my paternal grandmother's maiden name and my maternal grandfather was known as Jack too!) I have always loved Laura and Nicholas most consistently through the years - but they all have merit and I agree that you need a few so you can meet your child and see which name suits them!

I once heard of a couple who allowed her much younger brother to name their first child - he called it Forrest (Forrest Gump was a big movie out at the time)??? Then when they had their 2nd child Forrest got wind that his 'uncle' had named him and insisted on naming his new brother himself... you'd think they'd learnt their lesson but they let him anyway - he named his baby brother 'Truman'... you guessed it - the Truman Show was the movie of the moment!!

JAMESTHEDARK

MsG: You'd have an apoplexy if you came to the school I went to, when I was there. Half of the teachers were on their way out, and phoning in their work. Of those left, half of them were so green that you could use them to paint shamrocks, and torn between inept and rods-and-axes authoritarians. I can think of two that were actually effective teachers.
Oh, I just remembered. Bear in mind, what I'm about to say is unblemished truth: One of the teachers in that school was illiterate. I shit you not. Completely friggin' illiterate. Couldn't read a word of English, or any other language. What he was doing there, I can't say. Bring up pig farming, and you distract him for an hour.
And I also recall one incident, when I was seven years old, that my teacher (one Mrs. Smith, by name. Boney old bat...) dragged me by my hair out of the classroom. Couple that with three successive Principals who are either openly antagonistic toward you, completely oblivious of you, or only mildly interested in your plight, respectively, and you have a very unpleasant 'learning' environment.
Of course, this school is situated in a town which banded together to run a black family out of town only twenty or so years ago. It's so backwards you can almost hear the theme from Deliverance playing every time you're forced to drive past it.

Religion: I'm not Christian, by any stretch of the imagination. That's not to say I'm an atheist. I don't think that 'God' created the world, and all life on it. The world was formed by the accretion of particulate matter around a protostar, and life was formed by spontaneous amino-acid synthesis.
What I don't know, though, is where the Universe came from. If there is a God, than it is there whence I place Him.

"The Cut": I'm cut, and I've never really given it a second though. Any boys I have will also be. It's cleaner, there's a whole host of nasties which won't have a place to live, and a number of extremely painful conditions which they'll never need to worry about. Also, it's more showy. Ta-da!

For male names, though, I'd have to go with Logan. I'm not sure why I like it, but it seems to sound good to me. Or, I could do something weird, and dig into the 1800's names, and pull out something like Casher.

Hello Magdalena:

I have to be careful when it comes to religion and intolerance. It lights a fire inside me. I keep promising myself never to discuss religion or politics and yet I am drawn to it like a insect to one of those zappers. And ZAP there goes Traveler. I guess that would be the equivalent to being burned at the stake.

I like short single syllable names like Ruth or Anne. People always want to shorten your name anyway, so start out with one.

Hi James! I like Logan too - I think I associate it with pop culture/literary characters I liked! I like your take on 'creation' too... but if God is in the start of the Universe - then isn't He the one who created all life matter and all that stuff? Even though Joss Whedon didn't write every line of 'Firefly', 'Buffy' or 'Angel'... he is still the creator of those amazing shows... (hey - did you see what I did there? I made a Joss/God analogy!!)

Hey Traveler - that's cool about not discussing religious intolerance though I think we all need to air our thoughts now and again... it doesn't have to get you hot under the collar... But one thing that did recently: I saw 'Borat' last week at the cinema... (I know... and 'no' I am not recommending it to anyone...) and I was amazed by the intollerance displayed on at least 2 occassions by those proffessing to be Christian... once when a prostitute entered a home and Borat, who had well overstepped the mark several times and been excused, was suddenly told (& in no uncertain terms) to leave immediately! The other time absolutely stunned me - it was when he woke up on the footpath with nothing - just the clothes on his back and when we realised where he was... he had slept in the doorway of a church and the congregation were literally stepping over him to enter the building... if any of them stopped to talk with him or to see if he was OK or needed anything it was not shown in the film... That, my friends, is not Christianity as I understand it... and I tend to get my examples straight from Jesus (ie:the original Christian) wherever I can!

OK... heavy rant over now...sorry... I also wanted to say that those two names you mentioned, Traveler - Ruth and Anne - are also two of my favourites and my best friend's middle name is Ruth and mine is Anne... so there you go! There are some beautiful Biblical names too... Rebekkah or Sarah are names I like, Ruth is actually my favourite Old Testament book... Naomi is another lovely name for a woman!

Oh - and as a nanny I can say that more of the little boys I have changed nappies for in recent years have not been snipped... and there is really no medical reason to do so... nor should it be a 'turn off' for any woman (we're now talking about adult relationships, just to be clear) I am sure!! I would prefer to not have any son of mine circumsized if/when the time comes...

EDIT: Oh... I forgot to comment on the problem with internet filters thing... there is a town in England that had all sorts of issues with filters - none of the websites would come up on Google or any other search engine... the problem was in the middle of this town's name was a rather demeaning and particularly offensive 4-letter-word... poor people couldn't log on to the Scunthorpe Library, Scunthorpe School, Scunthorpe Theatre Company or even the Scunthorpe City Council... all were blocked by filters... True story!

Hey back at you Magdalena. The story of Ruth is my favorite as well. Small world.

Now circumcision was considered cleaner and thus healthier years ago. Now I think that has changed. We bath more frequently and the medical profession does not push it like they used to. Like most things it will change slowly. In a couple of generations it will probably disappear. Only remaining in the Hebrew tradition. I have heard of men having it done in later life and damn if I would let anybody cut me down there. Even thinking about make me edgy.

Penguin, I've been missing you. Hope you can take a break from work and post more often.

Kinetic, nice to see you on the Imponderable thread. I hope you come back and post often.

MsG, I like a lot of the names that have been mentioned. I really like the ones that DTH suggested. I'm surprised that Traveler didn't recommend Priscilla or Kim.

Mav, I'm always in favor of not hurting infants although I did have a friend who was big on the natural ways of birthing and no cutting. She had twin boys. They were not circumcised. Then one got an infection when he was 4 years old. Hmmm, she really regretted not having it done at birth because of the pain and trauma that it caused her son when he was 4. Needless to say the boys are no longer identical.

JQ, about what people call me, I answer to a lot. There are a few that call me VX, although most go for VE. I've even had a few shorten it to Verse. Our Dearest Magda calls me her older Kaylee Clone, and of course she is my dear Aussie Younger Kaylee Clone.

That was some farewell wave that you posted. Are you ever coming back? Don't leave us. Be sure to come back.

NVG, I hope things are working out with GND. Take all the time you need. By the way, I do love the tattoo.

DTH, recently a newbie asked how I was able to make such a great signature. I immediately told him that my friend DeskTopHippie had made the custom signature for me (as well as 2 others that I alternate occasionally). You are the BEST and very talented.

LA, I think it was in the Bar and Grill that you mentioned you were cooking latkes for 12. How did it go? Are you exhausted? Don't ever volunteer to do that again.

AsortaFairyTale, I live near the Grand Canyon, so be sure to stop before you ever take a trip there. I want to meet you before you go.

Chris, you have a friend with a daughter named Serenity? That is so cool.

Rhyianan, I have to agree with you. Talking about taping a child to the wall is one thing, but doing it is criminal. No need to apologize for the rant. The parents should be apologizing.

James, it makes my skin crawl to hear about the educational system that you went through. I wish you could have been in a nurturing environment with teacher's that could see your gift and potential. I admire you that you are able to continue your education.

Traveler, discussing religion can be a heated discussion, but I think you know that those of us on the Imponderable thread are accepting of everyone's beliefs.

My Dear Magda, are you still around. I have been missing your posts.

I think you got everybody. Good job.
I actually don't like the name Priscilla. Although that does not stop me from liking the woman. Kim is good. I should have come up with that one right away. Da! A name I do like is Philipa. I am not sure if that is how it is spelled. A "Masterpiece Theater" production had a female character with that name and it stuck in my head.

If could rant about education now that I have covered religious intolerance, but I think one or two rants a week are enough and two in one thread is a bit much. Call this a mini rant.

Hey, Traveler, nice to know you're still around tonight. I understand how you can like someone, but not really care for the name. I love my Captain, but I'm not a big fan of the name Malcolm.

You know it's late at night, and there's not many around right now, so you can rant all you want about education. I'm in the field, and I can see a lot of the problems. Of course my view is that there are too many uninformed politicians that are making decisions about our educational system.

Yea VerseExplorer, Milwaukee does not lead the nation in education. I can not place the whole blame on them. My family was disfunctional. I inherited my alcoholism from my father. So I had bigger things to deal with than homework or studying for a test. I just get angry that none of my teachers ever bothered to ask what is going on. I could have said something. But what does a kid know. I was just going from day to day.

That is the past. I don't live like that anymore.

Someone brought up an imponderable about our worst injury. When I was in treatment for my own alcoholism I was 37 years old. They evaluated me and told me I had the emotional level of a 14 year old. That hurt. That was 19 years ago. So now you know you are talking to someone who is trying to learn to behave like an adult.

The one thing I learned in that time is I am not alone. We have over 24,000 registered members at this fansite. The odds are there are lot of them who share the same story. We have hundreds of AA meetings in Milwaukee every week and some are packed to the rafters with people just like me. So my story is not that uncommon.

Well Chrismoorhead said not to keep secrets. I have very few left.

Hey Kaylee-clone!! (not so very much older though!) I am babysitting at the moment and don't have my floppy disc (with my favourite addresses) with me but I will answer your email when I get home... (how cool is it that the family suggested I use the internet while I am here??!!) I have moved in to my new digs (last night) for the next 6 weeks and I love it!

Hey Traveler - one of my great-great Grandmothers was called Phillippa and I do like that name too... I also have a story about the spelling - when they arrived in Australia after a 4 month journey by ship, they would have been asked their names and asked to either sign or make a mark against it... in her Cornish accent she said her name and then made a cross next to what was written on the paper... Phallappa! There are many such stories from countries which spoke other languages, but this one from England always tickled me!

Sad to say she died less than a year later of dysentry, here in Melbourne and her infant son died the next day - they were both burried on Christmas day... (remember that this was in the height of summer and there wouldn't have been refridgeration available) I often think about her family in England - waiting for 4 months for a letter or news of the new baby, then finding out that she was dead and burried when they were celebrating their Christmas...

Ah...OK... anything less morbid to discuss...??

Traveler, when we were growing up teachers were not as informed about how to identify children that were going through family problems and abuse. They absolutely should have noticed something, and it makes me feel sad to know how many children have gone through horrible experiences without anyone doing anything about it. Hugs for everything you have gone through.

Magda, Yeah! I'm so glad to hear that you will be here more often. It's so nice to know that the family suggested that you use the internet there.

Life is good, Magda. And like Penguin some of the Imponderables will be waking up soon. Although being Saturday, some will probably be sleeping in a little bit later.

Yes, I am marching with the 76th. I wouldn't miss it.

SmartButDumbBlonde!!!! (who is never dumb IMO...) How are you Honey?? I am worried about those nose-bleeds! Do you get those when you have a temperature? My little Su Cheh gets them when she has a temp and it's like someone turns on a tap! It was really scary the first time too... I put a wet towel (not a face-washer/flannel - a hand or hair towel) around her neck and (don't laugh) sit her on the vanity and put her feet in cold water in the sink... it works very quickly! Take care of yourself Sweetheart! We have missed you and hope you were happy with your marks and all!!

Yes - Kaylee-clone! I suppose they will - but I am going to bed now - I have to sing in front of lots of people in about 7 or 8 hours and I just got home from my babysitting job! of course I also got paid so I don't mind!

Oh - you've got mail too!

sneaky ninja kisses for my qing ren hope you enjoy your weekend!

Goodnight all! - Magda x x x

I don't know what it is Magda, but when I get a bad cold, I get nosebleeds. I think I'm to big to fit in our sink, I ususally just drip into said sink until it finishes, or if I'm busy, stick some kitchen towel up there. I've always had them, since I was little, and I once went through a faze which lasted about a fortnight where I was having 5 or 6 a day.

I am happy with my marks, I got an As in Geography and English language, A*s in RE and Citizenship (ironically the two things which are compulsary to take, and I hate) and Bs in English literature and Art.
The art is the only one I'm not happy with, but I had everything planned out, then 3 days before the exam , my art teacher told me he didn't like what i was doing and had to change everything. We argued, he made me cry (me, the Ice queen!), then the head of Art came in and said I could do more or less what I wanted. My art teacher still feels really guilty about it and keeps trying to be nice to be, but it won't work ,seen as I never liked him in the first place, the ching wah tsao duh liou mahng. .

TRAVELER

Goooood morning everyone or afternoon to those in other areas of this world.

Busy Saturday morning everyone. Bank, get a replacement screw for my glasses and finally broke down and got a new dictionary and thesaurus. They are hard cover and I hope that means they will last longer previous ones.

Aiya Smartbutdumbblonde:

That fong luh go se teacher sounds like a hwoon dahn.

I had a trigonometry instructor who complained if we asked questions. I started ignoring his lectures and strictly studied from the book. One of the few classes I got A's.

Are you nearly completed with your studies?
I foolishly stopped and never finished. That is why I advise people to never take a break and keep going while they have the momentum.

Hello and goodnight! I am off to bed - but I do like the idea of a new thesaurus and dictionary - I can't justify buying either at the moment, but I love those two incredibly useful books... I am still using my old high school dictionary and the internet was not heard of back then... so there were a few words not included!

Good night - good morning my dear friends - * for my qing ren* - Magda x x x

Whoah... you weren't kidding Kaylee-clone! It has been a quiet day in Imponderable land... I think you just posted before me and that means that my dear RIMG was the only one to post in the last 21 hours before that!!!???

*shouts* Helloooooooo?... Where are you all?

Hmmmmm... I did miss you RIMG... I miss my Jimi-bear-hugs when you are not around and you are in my thoughts!!

Is anyone awake yet? Is it Monday over there??

EDIT: Oh dear - I meant to say that I missed Kim for a little while there Traveler - but that is a way sexeh picture of her! I loved the gorgeous sirens of the 50s and 60s... I think I have mentioned that I adored Audrey Hepburn to the point that I had a dream I would find out I was her love child - adopted out to my own parents and would blossom into her mini-me any day now! Then again I used to dream that I found a way to time travel and I would go back 100 years and play with Laura Ingalls Wilder before that... and when I was younger still - there was this fantasy that I could go and play with Winnie-the-Pooh & Piglet and Christopher Robins at Pooh Corner... I had an active imagination

Magda, I am awake, but I'm heading for bed. I was partying this weekend, so I haven't been on FFF.net much lately.

You do have such a wonderful imagination. You might as well pretend that you can transport yourself to the States and back. It would be so nice to have Magda show up on our door steps. I hope to catch up with you later on after I get a few hours of sleep. Nighty night.
