Has Rayne become canon? In most big post-BDM series I find that Rayne is one of the pairings. The Jayne/River relationship wasn't really part of the series but has it become canon anyway?

I wouldn't say it's canon necessarily, just a very common pairing. Though in my opinion, if the series had continued, I could have saw it happening, though not as a long term relationship. Joss would be one to do something that evil, after all.

No and personally I cannot stand it.

My personal opinion is that most shippers are just tying up the two loose people.

Neither Jayne nor River have a love interest in Canon, so they just link them up.

Apart from that I cannot see any link whatsoever. There is nothing in canon that supports it, or even hints at it. (I could however be proven wrong if people would be courteous enough to give my strong post a politer response by producing such material...)

I have tried to read a few stories, and a couple of justifications but just do not buy it.

But for some reason it has become too common on here.

In my mind it would have never happened, but I seem to be in a shrinking minority.

IMO, Rayne is not canon. It's just a funny thought. I first came across the idea in fanvids. There is one that seems to fit the hate and possible love relationship between them. It's to The Case Continues.

Although the love interest is a stretch for both characters. I wouldn't want to have Joss go in that direction because it just doen't make sense, but still it is a funny thought.

Joss et al define canon, NOT the fan fic writers. This never happened in FF/S therefore it is NOT canon.

I wholeheartedly agree. I dislike all non-canon pairings, with the exception of certain Jayne/OC and River/OC ones.

I find the whole thing ridiculous, and simply do not understand. I've tried reading a couple to get the reasoning behind it, but it just seems the gap is covered for no reason.

Totally with NBZ and Grey Albatross. Rayne also has too many rape connections for me. I think some people hook them up because they have no one else. I can't see it happening.

I agree completely. I remember saying something very similiar to your comment about disliking all 'non-canon' pairings, but was responded with a lot of, 'what is canon, anyway' responses. I like what Joss did with the 'Verse, and if he didn't do it, then I don't buy it. The fans don't decide what's canon, that's for the shows creators and writers. I don't really see it happening, personally. Mostly because River's still kindof a little girl, and Jayne is this big rough guy... I'd never be comfortable with that, just thinking about it makes me want to yell, 'get off!'. But there's a lot about fanfic that I don't get.

THANK YOU! I totally see the rape theme there. They have very little connection and River is basically a little kid in her mind.

1. If you try it and don't like it, you don't have to do it again.

I know lots of people hate Rayne fiction, but I kinda like it. When well written, there's a really interesting dynamic between the two of them. It can be made to work, and in some of the better ones, it actually makes a lot of sense. To me, anyway. I doubt very much Joss would ever go in that direction if the series had continued. But hey, it's only fiction! If it puts a smile on my face, I'm happy, and that's enough for me
