I'mfed up of Browncoats asking other Browncoats if they are worthy to be a Browncoatthey tend to be the ones with everything FIrefly/Serenity.

You don't have to own the the DVDs hell you don'thave to have seen the film or vise versa as long as your a fan of Firefly or Serenity or both you're Browncoat, there are no rules, regualtions,guidelines,well actually onlyone just be a fan.I watched Serenity thought it was the best but never got around to buying Firefly till about 7 moths ago a whole 6 or so months after I'd seen Serenity, I had the Serenity OST & Serenity on UMD before I got Firefly & I wasn't sure I could be called a Browncoat before I had the Firefly DVD even after I got Firefly.But then I met Fireflyfans.net around 6 months ago being my first forum I'd ever joined & onlyone of 2 now(gamespots the other).

Anybody who has even visited fireflyfans.net,wathced Serenity,wathced Firefly,Bought Firefly/Serenitymerchandise,ect is a BROWNCOAT full stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Personally, I believe being a Browncoat is more of a system of beliefs than anything else. I've only seen the movie once and a couple of the episodes more than once. It's great, I just don't have the time to watch things over and over again. If I could watch it at work, I'd probably have seen it 20 times by now.

That being said, I think there are some Browncoats that are Browncoats because they're fans of the show/movie, but not because they think like Browncoats. They happen to have beliefs and act much more like they are Alliance than Browncoats.

It all depends on your definition.

Darkfly... I think the only prerequisite for being a Browncoat is that you LOVE Firefly/Serenity. I personally don't believe you have to own a thing or do a thing in order to "be" a Browncoat. No one else can judge what's inside a person. Folks have to do that for themselves.

You know, bein' all independent and all.

From personal experience... most boards aren't as friendly as this one. Some other boards make a person feel excluded for lots of different reasons... I think perhaps some new folks can't quite believe their good fortune to have found a community of people who believe the same way they do and have it also be a loving, kind, open
community. So I think they ask.. "How do I become a BC?", or "I feel like one, am I really?". Once they're enfolded into the community.. they know they're home.

I hope they feel that way! And I hope this site continues to be such a place for folks.

I think that also depends on whether you're applying Browncoat "ideals" to the real world.
And since the basic Browncoat "ideal" seems to be independent thinkin', I'd say however a person thinks and expresses his personal freedoms would fall under the category of "independent". I personally don't judge the folks around me by the movie's or show's stated "ideals". I just enjoy the movie or the show and live with my own "ideals" in the real world. Just MHO.

I will say that a lot of my personal "ideals" fall under the same heading as some of the BC ones.

Such as, loyalty to friends, keeping my word, taking care of my family, being as good as I can be in the world in which I live.

I will also say that I'm very proud to be a Browncoat... was even more so after B3.

I agree that this is the case in all but one area. I've felt marginalized and insulted on numerous occasions because of my political and religious beliefs (one of our own even said that he'd like to see all those of my faith burn at the stake). I know that with my views, I'm in the minority, and I can accept that (I've been there most of my life). But things can get pretty vicious sometimes. That said, I should probably stay out of RWED, and even if I do venture in, I guess I shouldn't expect anything like rational discussion. But tolerance I do expect, and sometimes I find it's in short supply. I guess that just goes to show that not even this fandom is perfect.

Oh, Causal, I'm very sorry that's happened to you.

Prejudice of any type, whether because of religious belief or heritage is abominable in my opinion.
To be ridiculed or made to feel bad is horrible.

This group of all folks should be tolerant of one another. Once again.. independent thinkin' and all.

Even in the RWed discussions there should be tolerance and a general air of "listening" (for want of a better word) to each other. After all, that is what we're here for... an exchange of ideas.. whether it's about our favorite character on the show or what we believe and why we believe it.

I hope that improves this year. I truly do.
The group that found the wherewithal to make happen and go to B3 is that capable of being good to each other.

To paraphrase Inara, a Browncoat is just a person fan enough to ask that question. Our time together here, on the board, it's a ritual, a symbol. It means something to us. I hope it's not entirely forgettable for you. But it doesn't make you a Browncoat. That you do yourself.
