I just took a look at M's current work. Gotta say that I don't think that FF/S fits this style. So, I'm gonna take a pass on this.

Now, if you change it to a more advanced Spirits Within, then I'd be more than willing to check out a sample. Anything less then that, IMO, isn't good enough.

And just a note, many many people in this world don't like it when people "name drop". It sends the message that you are trying to make yourself look bigger than what you really are by attempting to associate yourself with someone who is someone. So, please stop it. You're only making yourself look bad.

Many people in this world also realize that Sundance is pretty much just a convention (for indie film and Hollywood types), and thus half the reason of going for some people is to meet people they're a fan of (and it ain't exactly hard to meet someone famous if you've got a film or something at Sundance, trust me. Not that I've ever gotten to go, but it's rather infamous for being a celebattraction, and I've always gotten the impression that you couldn't go 20 feet without seeing someone either famous or less-than-famous-but-with-cult-following :P).

In short - oversensitive, much? I've heard good things about The Fountain, and I like Jason Momoa. I'd happily declare it if I met those guys, too (especially Jason, because he seems like he'd be kinda cool. Plus me = HUGE Stargate fan. OK, sure, he was only on Atlantis, but still, he's like, one of the two characters on there I still really, really like); just like I like to happily declare that I've met two different BDHs (one of whom kinda maybe sorta flirted with me! I think). Jeez. Being excited about meeting somebody - especially when it's just happened - doesn't necessarily equal "name-dropping". Again - oversensitive, much? Do you know someone that "name-drops" that incessantly, that every little mention of "I got to meet Jason Momoa!" sounds like full-blown "ZOMG LOOK AT ME AREN'T I IMPRESSIVE I NOES FAMOUS PEOPLE!!!1" bragging? I just ask because, really, I didn't see any of what he said as "name-dropping" so much as "Whee! I got to meet people I'm a fan of! LOOK! PICTURES, TOO!" Fanboyish? A tad. But "name-dropping" - especially in the context I think you (have explicitly declared to) mean that term to be taken in? I wouldn't go so far as to call it that, personally. So... chill, perhaps?

Would anyone be down for roto-scoping... the type of animation like in those Charles Schwab commercials... or in the movies "Waking Life" or "A Scanner Darkly"?

If it were that type of animation for a Firefly type show I'd be down.

In fact I'd be completely content to see other stuff in the 'verse other than the crew of Serenity... I know that sounds kind of "Blah" to some of you but... I'm a big fan of the universe that Joss created... and would love to see how someone else tackles said place.

Um, how does this even remotely address my criticism?

While it is true that a lot of Hollywood types go there, it doesn't mean that people get to go around saying, "Look who I talked to, about my project!" without saying anything about what they said about the project nor saying if there will be a viewing of his movie.

As in it's one thing to say, "Hey guys, I showed my movie at Sundance and not only did it get good reviews, these guys liked it too!" It's a completely other thing to just name drop. See:

No, but I could say that about you. Basically, I just gave a little note that is widely known to be true, and you returned a quite long reply attempting to slam me.

Again, no, read what I wrote. Also read what he wrote (the above link).

It's also one thing to talk about the people that you met at a con or some such (which I wasn't talking about, that's your assumption), but an entirely different thing to talk about who you talked to about your project without indicating what they said about it, etc (see above link).

Coincidentally , I was just watching " Scanner " last night , and found myself thinking , " We could do this to get more Firefly content ".

Surely there is such a thing as " digital rotoscoping " , versus the old-style that is hand-drawn with the aid of a machine that moves film along sprockets .

So , we take all the Firefly eps as source material , digitally process all the actors in action to create a library of " moves " , and we likewise digitally copy the voices as phonemes . Some of the inflections might not be spot-on once the phonemes are created and reconstructed from the " voice library " , but they could likely be digitally " tweaked " , or we would just re-write the script to get something that would work and sound right .

Then we make an animated digital fan tribute film , and tell that unutterable F*>< network to " stick it " , 'cause Browncoats might get kicked , but we are never " down " .

Or , we could get busy creating Firefly machinima , with similar techniques , but still lift as much as possible straight from the series , and just drop it into a suitable game platform and press " record " on a DVR...

Either way , it's more " in your face " to those F*><-heads that canceled our show...

Everybody's gonna be a skeptic , 'til we get 'er done...

It's still " our " actors , " Joss's show " , and neatly skirts any copyright issues cause we're really not using anything in its original form , plus it's a " tribute " fan-film to Our BDH's !

So , then it goes up on YouTube and GoogleVideo , and creates a sensation because it gets a " bazillion " hits ! Maybe then , the F*><-heads decide to cash in the " rights " for some cashy-coin...And then we get Joss on a BigDamnNetwork like HBO creating new live-action Firefly eps for a broad audience , with major
film-quality production values once again...

Some of the people that currently work for me worked on Spirits Within. The company that produced that movie had to fold because it was not an economically feasible way of making a movie. I personally enjoyed the movie, but never saw the point in doing it in CG and personally I don't think CG realism is really a style per se.

Their budget was about $1 million per minute. We created a style in which we can produce a product for under $25k per minute. Most CGI work is currently being out sourced overseas which my company is strongly against.

The roto scoping process doesn't save much money either - since you still have to have a sound stage and shoot the scenes as blocked. I like the look, but again, not necessarily a viable model.

BTW You all should see Black Snake Moan which debuted there too.

The names that were important to me at Sundance would not mean much to you - Joey Horvitz, Ellen Huang, and David Hays. These are the real connections that can make projects happen. Directors and TV actors really have very little pull.

As far as people at Sundance saying they liked my project?

Ann Druyan (Carl Sagan's wife and co-producer of Cosmos TV series) liked the fact we both were promoting the idea of solar sails for propulsion.

David Sington (Director, IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON) said, "Yours is the most interesting idea I've ever heard for a science fiction film. I look forward to seeing it."

Image example from A Scanner Darkly...Rotoshop is a proprietary graphics editing program created by Bob Sabiston. Rotoshop uses an animation technique called interpolated rotoscoping, which has been used in Richard Linklater's films Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly. The name is a portmonteau of "rotoscope" and "Photoshop", a photo editing program from Adobe. The software is NOT currently available for use outside Flat Black Films.

Aims
The software was developed in order to do extremely lifelike hand-drawn animation - specifically, to animate the types of expressions and gestures people make that ordinarily would not be scripted into someone's film. Every person has little things that characterize their speech and movement that uniquely identify them, characteristics which this type of animation emphasizes.

Use

Interpolation
Interpolation is the technique in which a frame can be drawn, then a future frame can be drawn, and the intermediate frames are automatically generated. It is a simple form of "automatic tweening." Interpolated lines and shapes have a very smooth, fluid motion that is extremely difficult to achieve by hand-drawing each line.

Freezing
In order to manage different objects in the scene, the user can break the drawing into layers. A layer can be "frozen" so that a single drawing remains visible throughout the entire scene. This feature is necessary for backgrounds and other things that do not change shape through time. This frees the user from having to draw the same image 24 times for every second of a scene.

We just create the " Firefly-Class " Anime/Machinima " Open Source Software Project ".

Then , we get busy with the " Firefly-Class " Fan-Film using the software we've made .

The notion that someone else is creating " New " interpolating software for Rotoscoping might encourage this FlatBlack outfit to license their software , or make it available in Commercial and Amateur versions...

When we start making the BDH's look as good as Ms. Ryder does above , folk will definitely get onboard...

I mean, LONG before any Miyazaki bits were in the public eye, Moebius kept me enTRANCED with... every damn thing he did... (!!) If I recall correctly, he even illustrated several books for ...Alejandro Jodorowsky... the one I remember once having a copy of, I THINK was called "Black Pearl"... but for the life of me, I can't find any record of such a volume existing...

Gentle Browncoats, if the greatest comic artist of the 20th Century is part of this - You are gonna be So HAPPY when it's done.

For this to succeed, I hope the bad taste in Joss's mouth from his experience with Jean-Pierre Jeunet during "Alien Resurrection" doesn't carry over onto other French things of an artsy nature, ie., "Moebius."

Agreed, I currently work a full time night shift, and i would love to be able to watch Firefly during my shift. (Just pitching for the sake of pitching) Maybe instead of picking up where the Serenity left off, pick up where Firefly left off. Gotta give it up to my man Wash. You have my total backing/support if you deicide to do a animated Firefly.

I came into this thread way late, obviously. My opinion? I am not into anime at all, through lack of exposure mostly, but if Joss were on board, then the quality would be there, and I would be there too.
