I was wondering who on the site has a Whedonesque account. That being said, there's been something that is kind of bothering me.

I recently joined the site in December. And while I don't mean to be offensive or confrontational in any way, it seems to me (and again, maybe this is my perception), that people there can be a little...well, harsh. Perhaps I'm just used to being on this site, but it sometimes seems like sniping is a lot more frequent occurence there. Not to say we don't have our own share (just take a stroll through the RWE ). But it just seems that things are more strict and tense on that site. I've felt a lot more uncomfortable posting than I do here.

*sigh*

Okay, rant over. Sorry, but it's just been bugging me.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I also just signed on in December, and have only posted a couple of times. Haven't yet read enough there to form an opinion like that. Before I only visited when news items were linked over at serenitymovie.org.

Well...I have been a member for a while now (April 17th 2006) and while it's not quite the puppies and rainbows ya get around the BSR, I can't say I have noticed anything truly harsh.

Now...there have been moments where the moderators have made their presence known quite visibly, but I personally feel that they have only jumped in to either comment on a post or keep a discussion properly channelled.

Do you have any specific examples of things being down and dirty?

I agree with BEB... although the rules there are strict and I've seen mods speak up to keep people on focus and from arguing or dithering I've not ever seen anyone be harsh to another person.

All and all I feel welcome at Whedonesque. I still am a bit overwhelmed posting there, and sometimes my shyness and feelings of inadequacy win out, but I do enjoy being a member very much.

Yes, I've been involved with two controversial subjects. Unfortunately, at those times I was not a member. I am now.

*shrug*

Buffy and Angel fandom is an entirely different beast. I've been to conventions with general sci-fi fans and a particular convention focused on just Buffy and Angel fans. It's a smaller fandom than most (before Firefly came along) and I've noticed that it is almost clique-ish. I've always noticed that fans of vampire related mediums are just slightly different than the casual or nerdy/geeky fan. Not in a bad way, but certainly unique.

Plus you've got to think, Buffy and Angel can sometimes be considered by fans to be the pinnacle of Whedon's television expression. Firefly didn't last so long and a little territorialism in the fandom is to be expected.

But in a general sense, yes, I believe Whedonesque can be harsh at times. I just roll with it.

I joined in December, too. I haven't seen anyone being harsh, but it just doesn't feel like home. I like FFF.net. I just signed on Whedonesque to see what it was like.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

You know I signed up in December during the registration window, and honestly I have yet to post over there. I probably should, but I have been here and other Firefly sites, as well as at other sites of interest. So, in short I have no real experience with posters at Whedonesque.

Reckon I should wander over there and post something.

I have to agree with VerseExplorer and say that it doesn't really feel like home over there. And maybe that's what's been bothering me. Before coming here, I never really had joined any kind of online forum. So for me, it was really wonderful to find such a warm atmosphere right off the bat. Things are very laid-back on FFF.net, whereas on Whedonesque (at least to me), there seems to be a more formal atmosphere in terms of what you're posting and how you respond to other posts.

And now that I think of it, maybe our different reactions might stem from the show that we connect with most. The idea of family is very emphasized on Firefly, something that we've all kind of adopted here. And while the idea of family is important on the other shows, it's not as central a theme, I don't think.

So I guess that might be where my discomfort stems from. Thanks for helping me sort things out.

From Simon & Caroline's fingertips on whedonesque.com to you:

Quote:

WHEDONesque is a community weblog discussing the work of TV maker Joss Whedon. Anyone can post a story or comment to this site, as long as it pertains to Joss Whedon's work.

A weblog (or 'blog') is a regularly updated site, with links to and commentary on information found on the web, posted in reverse chronological order (so that the latest post is always at the top of the page).

Whedonesque does not allow the chatty fun threads that you'll find here or at serenitymovie.org. It is a true weblog- a posting of whedon related web pages and events.

To me, the Mods over there are MUCH more active (ahem) than the mod here. Haken is nonexistant in the threads. Caroline and Simon are active participants. There are a few other mods who very rarely show up here, like Shiny for example - but it is becoming few and far between.

These are the differences, imo.

I'm not trying to be disrespectful in any way towards the mods on Whedonesque. Posting this thread was a way for me to sort out the conflicted feelings I was having, being new to the site. I enjoy reading about the different opinions I come across on Whedonesque. This isn't a slam on anyone.

I'm one of the admin staff/mods at Whedonesque. I would hate to think that anybody would feel uncomfortable posting there. I will agree that the site is different from Fireflyfans.net (which in itself is a wonderful place). We're a messy melting pot of Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Serenity, Astonishing X-Men, Fray, Spike, Xander, Tara, James Marsters, David Boreanaz, Sarah Michelle Gellar fans (to name but a few). So umpteen zillion different opinions will occur. Plus there's the whole blog thing going on as opposed to message board vibe.

We do have a sister site at Whedonesque.org which allows for more OT stuff.

Thanks for the reply Simon. I didn't want anyone to think I was insulting you guys, I just wanted to get a better grasp of things.

Sweetie! I hope you didn't take my post as a rebuke, because it wasn't! I didn't think you were slamming anyone at all.
I LIKE that Simon (see above me! Hi Simon!)and Caroline are active participants.
He's right. There IS a different tone over there than here. As I posted before, it is because it is a weblog, not thready like here.
I feel the same way over at serenitymovie.org, the new girl on the block.

But personally...I can't seem to understand how to post a new thread with the link in the first line like they do at whedonesque. And inserting a link into your post? I'm cornfused.

Since we're talking about it... I've never belonged to any forum but this, which I like very much. I've considered joining whedonesque, but never gotten around to it. I'm not real motivated. Probably because I'm happy here!

So, as motivation... what's the good stuff to be had there? More Joss-info? More fic? More people?

I joined Whedonesque last month but have yet to post there. I have visited the site for a long time, but just had the opportunity to join. I think it is a great source of information about all things Whedon. It's just different than here as far as the whole chat/blog thing goes. I like and appreciate them both. Now if we could get a forum to talk about the 'New Firefly Television Series' (crosses fingers), I would be happy.

Well...let's see...relatively quick updates about your favorite Jossverse actor/actress' newest projects....discussions about academic studies of Joss-related projects...review articles about Jossverse series...fan forum speculation about future Joss projects (i.e. Wonder Woman, Goners, etc.)

Plus, you can wait and read the MySpace posts for Nathan and Jewel and others;)

Well, Joss posts over there. But keep in mind, membership is only open a couple times a year, or so. That's part of why someone new might find it a bit intimidating as compared to this place. FFF.net is constantly changing, as there is a constant influx of new members and very little moderation. Whedonesque has a more firmly established culture.

Hmm. Sounds like a lot of work, and it's really all the chat here that I like.

Besides, anything important that comes up on Wedonesque gets posted here anyway...
