I know this will sit wrong with a few of you but... what is the Browncoat reference? So far, the only time I heard it referenced was early in the movie when Mal is talking briefly to the Trade Agent prior to robbing them.

Trade Agent: You all are Browncoats, eh? Fought for independence? Petty thieving ain't exactly soldiers' work.

Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: War's long done. We're all just folk now.

You were busy trying to get yourself lit on fire. It happens.

Most of the Independents wore brown. It was like their uniform. It'll make more sense when you watch the series.

In the Train Job the drunken fellow at the bar often refers to the independents as the "browncoats."
And then there's also: "Y'know your coat is kind of a brownish color..." When he's insinuating that Mal was an Independent. I'm sure there are other times too, but you are right that it's not used in the series as much as the fans use it. I suspect it's just a fun term to describe them with.

Browncoats is a term used to descride the independent fights for the long heavy browncoats they wore during the fight for independence from the Union of Allied Planets (Purplebellies). A war that was lost. A lost that Malcolm Reynolds took deeply. Anyway it is all explained in the GREAT seies that is Firefly and once you get that series and watch it, it will all make a lot more sense. Firefly, the brain child of Joss came about after reading a book about Americas Civil War.

Whip, I say you're in for a real treat when the series arrives

I think it might by used more often than independents. It's a play on the old nicknames armies used to get, like Red Coats for the British.

All these folks are right about the definition, but not so much on the history. I think us fans grabbed it up and ran with it.
Got a nice rythym to it. can ya imagine--
" NewOldPurpleBelly " ?

Nah, me neither...
