I know this has been discussed ad nauseum but I have yet to see a clear answer.

So I ask you: Who has the TV rights to Firefly?

Is it *** ? Is it Universal? Is it the Jossman? Who?

Why is the rum always gone?

SHAMELESS

Yeah, another thing - my boyfriend and I were debating something, he was saying that Joss has the rights to his characters or something, and that it wouldn't make sense for F*x to have the rights to the show to the extent where Joss can't make another series without F*x selling the rights to the show to the network that would do it... I'm all confused. Help!

------------------------------------------
RPG launcher bought in third world country illegally - $10
Landmines - $50 per
Attack/track dogs bred 1st class - $250-500 per
Highpowered assault rifles - $600 per
The look on your face when I show up on your doorstep with a bigfoot - ... Priceless

Fox owns the rights. Most of the Firefly goodies available in the shops are licensed to Fox. Fox sold movie rights to Universal, and any Serenity-based merchandise is licensed from Universal.

Some examples:

The QMX replicas are Serenity replicas, and are licensed from Universal. They currently don't have any rights from Fox.

The Metaverse game is licensed from Fox - they have the rights to make a game, but don't have the rights to use characters (according to the interview with The Signal).

The Titan books were licensed from both - the Serenity companion from Universal, and the Firefly companion from Fox.

I don't know what rights Joss has; I'm guessing the characters probably belong to him in some way.

THOLO

That is why I have always said they should make a "Serenity" tv show. Drop Firefly altogether.

Keep Flying!!

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

When the show was cancelled, Joss asked for the rights so he could shop it around elsewhere. They said yes. End of discussion.
I don't know who has them now, but it isn't FOX.
20th Century Fox, the production company, does still have production rights.
