Here's a little insight as to the workings of the powers that be that so benevolently protect the artists we know and love. I hope you find it as enlightening as I did.

http://archive.salon.com/tech/feature/2000/06/14/love/index.html

Love her or hate her Courtney Love knows quite a lot about the recording indusrty and copyright laws. I was blown away reading her insights about how the artists get robbed today by the record companies and the RIAA and now the new bill will ensure that artists songs are owned by their respective labels FOREVER.

EDIT: Reading it again now. I have to say I think my favorite quote is:

Quote:

"Stealing our copyright reversions in the dead of night while no one was looking, and with no hearings held, is piracy." ~ Courtney Love

Quote:

"Music is intellectual property with full cash and opportunity costs required to create, polish and record a finished product. If I invest money and time into my business, I should be reasonably protected from the theft of my goods and services. When the judgment came against MP3.com, the RIAA sought damages of $150,000 for each major-label-"owned" musical track in MP3's database. Multiply by 80,000 CDs, and MP3.com could owe the gatekeepers $120 billion.

But what about the Plimsouls? Why can't MP3.com pay each artist a fixed amount based on the number of their downloads? Why on earth should MP3.com pay $120 billion to four distribution companies, who in most cases won't have to pay a nickel to the artists whose copyrights they've stolen through their system of organized theft?"

I wonder if Nathan would have gotten any money if 11th Hour had successfuly been sued? Joss?

Come on everybody knows whats piracy, its nice to see people still believe in getting things the right way...buying them. But its not going to stop 90% of people download it instead.

I've only ever uploaded firefly pics & firefly ringtones on to filesharing sites and I wouldn't call that piracy cause pics are free so are the Firefly rintones.

Read the article before you post please. I know it's big and long, but if you're intelligent enough to have an opinion on this, you're intelligent enough to read it.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I believe that file sharing which the artist has no stake in or control over can hurt their already limited profits under the record label system, but I agree that the internet is an amazing distribution tool and that with a few shifts (which we're already moving towards) musical artists can get what they deserve for their work and the record companies can vanish into the mists of history.
The wheels of change grind slowly.

My brother is an independent artist who is using the internet to his full advantage. Owning all his songs and also getting paid for them; the best of both worlds. I hope he actually starts making enough to live on soon so he can focus on his music and the next album won't take five years for him to make on his own. It still takes a lot of time and money to do a good recording.

That's wonderful PR! I hope it all works out well for him. I'd be interested in knowing more, but I understand if you don't want to use fff.net as a plug for him. If you don't I'd love it if you pm'd me more information about his band.

I'm all about protections for the artists myself as well. So is Courtney Love and anyone who reads the article, which I'm taking it you did PR, will understand that. Copyright laws aren't inherently bad. It's the ever mutating versions of copyright laws in the recording and movie industries that do increasingly less to protect the artists, and conversely allow the major labels and studios easier access into the artist's wallets and purses so they can be robbed. This is especially true of the "Copyright Reversions" bill that Courtney was talking about in her quote above, which I think had been misunderstood by somebody who prematurely posted above without reading the article.

Great for your brother PR!!!

If you or anyone else wants to check out my brother, you can find him at http://www.emryshanley.com or on myspace at http://www.myspace.com/emryshanley There's a free download of his song 'Clay Figurines' available through his myspace page, as well as links to $1 downloads of all his other songs. My personal favorite is 'Oxygen Bar'.

And I never pass up an opportunity to pimp my brother's music. My brother is awesome.

Hey PR... sweet. I went to bed right after my last message so I didn't see that about your brother till now. I don't have any speakers here at work so I'll check out the link when I get back home.

I'm learning how to play guitar myself and I don't sing half bad. I'd love to get into a band by the time I'm 30... I've got about 2 1/2 years left to get good. Pity, how much I played videogames when I was a kid instead of doing anything worthwhile.

I am a big fan of the part of the copyright law which allows people to cover music and use it as long as there isn't any money being made off of it. With all of the questionably legal things that I do, at least I can say that I'm one of only a handful of people who isn't violating copyrights with their profile song on MySpace.

Probably not, but she is an excellent singer. Don't think her parents were Browncoats as she's too old for that. I think her parents were hippies. Absolutely amazing voice.
