Random question: name for crazy images

How's that for a title?

OK browncoats I figure someone here knows this. You know those registration forms on the internet these days that end with you filling in a string of numbers or letters in a crazy image that a computer can't read? What in the world are those called? I'm trying to research them for a paper but have had no luck finding out their name so I can get some info on how they work.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

no, really i know what you're talking about - i just saw one this morning, but i sure don't know what they're called - barcodes? no, hidden numbers - ?? that can't be right - that's a puzzler.. i'll get back to you.....
