September this year.

When the contracts get highlighted and Universal bigwigs have a look at the serenity situation what are they going to see?

-DVD sales not only doing well but also increasing interest and sales in Firefly.

-A cast and crew who gel together like no other

-A genius creator

-A Franchise that has kicked on, 4-5 years after a canceled TV show.

-Internet Sites and fans spread all over the world

-Me standing nearby with a Shotgun

What are peoples honest opinions?

have I left anything out?

I don't want one-eyed views on this, lets try and look at it from a Universal point of view.

Come September this year, what is going to happen?

Are they even going to look over the papers?

Serenity WILL come up on Universal's radar... time will tell if our dream comes to an end or rises like the phoenix from the ashes.

Talk to me people. I'm having one of my weekly rants

- steady and/or increasing Official Merchandise sales and license fees

- Nathan Fillion in a hit TV series Drive

- Nathan Fillion in a hit movie Waitress

- Nathan Fillion in at least one other Lost episode

- Good returns on Universal movie White Noise: The Light.

http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/
- June 2007 Fans arranged over 50 Serenity Charity Screenings raising over $100,000. Hopefully, even in countries where Serenity never played in theaters. Hopefully, some news coverage. (Last year: 47 screenings raised over $65,000 )

- money still coming in from Serenity Box Office. Theaters screening the movie on their own http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/otherscreenings.html. And Charity screenings film rental fees ($250 x # of films) . How many movies does Universal have that still do that two years after release.

Think. Universal. Think. If you released Serenity in all those countries that you didn't already. Or re-released it in select cities US, UK and Aussieland.

"alot of people are tired of star trek and want it to go to bed." These may not actually be people. The ones making these comments may be trolls. And trolls post this sort of thing just to get people mad.

I love Star Trek. I love Firefly. It is great to invite the Star Trek fans to discover Firefly, just don't get tricked into talking bad about Star Trek or Star Wars. Won't get any Star Trek fans to find Firefly that way and the trolls won't listen anyways...trolls are in it to upset people. I think trolls hate the fact that others love.

Really? Cool.

Don't forget

- Summer Glau on the FOX show The Sarah Connor Chronicles (cross your fingers that this one lasts)

- Gina Torres in the Chris Rock movie I Think I Love My Wife (hope this one does well)

- Jewel Staite in Stargate: Atlantis (again?)

and more. Every little bit helps.

As per my entry in another thread, they're sadly also going to remember that Serenity wasn't a huge box-office gross. Of the 19 movies that Universal did in 2005, Serenity was one of the bottom 4 that had neither a profit margin nor a return on investment, even factoring in a worldwide gross. I don't know how Serenity did in DVD sales (Wikipedia says they did ~$10 million as of a year ago), but their world box-office gross was $39 million, which was also roughly their budget on the picture.

Serenity was, sad to say, not an incredible success for Universal Studios in 2005. And sequels often perform worse than their originals, though I think we can expect that a Serenity sequel would do better. Still, there's no guarantee that Universal knows that fact.

At this point, I don't think one can make a prediction either way. Universal might pick it up or might not, and our only option is to be hopeful.

She played a wraith. Adopted daughter of a scientist who was trying to find a cure for his daughter so she didn't have to drain people. Didn't look human but it was Jewel.

She is going to have a recurring role on Atlantis--not as that wraith.

And Morena is on Stargate SG1.

Jewel also has a movie coming out this year I think "The Tribe".

Hey, excuse me if this is a stupid question, but what exactly happens in September this year? I know it's two years after Serenity was released, but was there a waiting period or something after Serenity to see if they would make a sequel?

On the Box-Office, still a bunch of countries that Serenity could be released in.

DVD sales figures are a big SECRET in Hollywood.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serenity_%28film%29

I think ~10 million you saw is actually the "DVD/VHS rentals of the film have grossed around $9,190,000." Rental figures are published on http://imdb.com etc.

We don't know what is going to happen. That is what we are talking about. What we HOPE will happen.

September 30, 2007 is another anniversary of Serenity's theater release in US.

This is what I remember. All the actors have signed contracts with Universal to make two sequels. One of the actors said that their contracts for the sequel with Universal expire at the end of this year 2007. So Universal has until the contracts expire to make a decision on a sequel. If Universal lets those contracts expire, the contracts would have to be renegotiated. Joss would also be able to shop around to get a sequel made or explore the many other options available to tell stories in the 'verse.

Be Careful. Someone posted a few years ago on The X-Files forum saying the same thing. I remember it well because I was with the show until the bitter end. The poster said we should also put the show to "sleep & start supporting Firelfy/ Serentiy."

If the poster was more sensitive about the post, many of the die hard X-Files fans includig even myself would of support the show sooner. I mean, we all at least had the same feeling for the FOX Network.

I have this "Feeling" that the DVDs are going to be re-released soon in very cool packaging & better advertising.

ALL of the Best Buys, Targets and Walmarts are out of Serentiy & Firefly. And none of the stores can tell me when they are coming back in, but they keep re-ordering them.

You are right. Dvd sales are huge in Hollywood & no one likes to share the information.

Just my guess & I believe it is a good guess

Here's a scenario: make the gorram sequel, and don't release it during a Katrina-like event, where American peeps elect to stay indoors and not contribute to those all-important first weekend movie grosses. Either one is in the path of the hurricane, and thus not given to going out to see a shiny movie, or one is following the news of the hurricane on their home televisions... and not going out to see the movie that weekend.

Bad timing, like the release of the BDM as Katrina devasted the Gulf of Mexico's coastal areas, is just plain bad luck. Since when does a Browncoat back down from a spell of bad luck?

You got it: never.

AND our Captain in Fox's new show-- Drive.

In my opinion, he show Drive and have Wash scoop him up in to a new Firefly episode.

--------------
Mal: Cry Baby cry.
Wash: Make your mother sigh. Engaging the CryBaby.

It's when the original contracts with Universal (to make three movies) expires, or so says Sean Maher (Simon on the show). If they don't do the other movies then, the likelihood of anything else on screen from the 'verse goes down.
