Zeitgeist, before I wrote my original post, I read every single comment on that thread, back when there were about 55 comments. Then I let it sit for an hour, and found that it still bothered me. So I went back, read every single comment again, including the new ones that had been posted in that hour, and found that this bothered me so much that my options were to either tell my family that Conservatives aren't welcome in Browncoat circles and to beware, or to post here and see if perhaps, I wasn't the only one smarting at the comments on Whedonesque.

And none of that changes the fact that CK posted saying that multiple mods and admins were Mormon bashing and OSC bashing, which is flat out false.
I actually wasn't saying that. I was saying that several people said they would not buy products produced by someone they perceive as a homophobe. Your own words, Zeitgeist, along with the lack of action to rein in the hateful talk against those who see homosexuality as sinful, was what led me to post "many posters -- including several of the moderators!! -- saying they would not buy any product" produced by someone like OSC.

This is an important point that I think is lost on many who posted in the Whedonesque thread: When a political view is held specifically because of one's religion, bashing that view is bashing the religion. I am not asking anyone to agree with OSC's views on homosexuality, and I have stated multiple times that I disagree with his views. But given the number of religious groups who hold the exact same views on homosexuality, and given the breadth of this fanbase, what I'm asking is that people take a step back and realize that there are other Browncoats who hold those same Conservative views. Conservatives belong in this fandom just as much as Liberals, but to read the Whedonesque thread, you wouldn't know it. Apparently, if you don't agree with every aspect of Joss Whedon's political point of view, you aren't allowed to be a fan of his work. That is the sentiment, stated over and over in almost all of the 86 comments thus far, that I find offensive.

When I woke this morning, I found that I have significantly cooled on the entire idea of the 'Verse. I read the posts referring to me on Whedonesque, and I've decided that I'm done with that website entirely. I simply refuse to use my free time reading a site that has no respect for the number of vastly different viewpoints held by Browncoats, and that doesn't understand that more than 80 comments condemning a traditionally-held Conservative viewpoint makes Conservative Browncoats feel unwelcome. And now that the thread is discussing me (with no link so that others can read and make up their own minds, I might add), I certainly feel unwelcome.

I used to find this: http://www.webcomicsnation.com/serenitytales/st_whatitmeans/series.php to be absolutely true about the Browncoats. Now I'm not so sure. For some Browncoats, rejecting those with a specific political view is apparently more important than embracing a fellow Browncoat.

Thank you to everyone who stood up and agreed with me, I very much appreciate it. Please keep this topic in mind the next time you see a group of Browncoats loudly espousing a single political view point. Firefly isn't about real world politics, and those who hold views different than the views of the majority should not be made to feel unwelcome. And to those who disagreed with me, that is your right, of course, and I have no argument with you. But if you find yourself discussing politics with other Browncoats, please take a moment to think about those who are feeling shut out because of their beliefs.

But none of the moderators said they wouldn't buy products produced by OSC or someone like him. And people have been warned and posts have been edited. That doesn't always happen as quickly as we would like with a small staff of folks who have full time jobs doing other things, but lack of action is certainly not the case at this time (it may have appeared so at some point when no one was actively scolding).

"Apparently, if you don't agree with every aspect of Joss Whedon's political point of view, you aren't allowed to be a fan of his work. That is the sentiment, stated over and over in almost all of the 86 comments thus far, that I find offensive."

I am 198% with you on that (although to say it was in almost all of the 86 posts and/or that no action was taking by mods/admins is at best disingenuous). I find that idea offensive as well. I do think that disagreeing with a particular belief held by a religion or religions is not the same thing as bashing the religion, however.

There actually IS a link back to this thread - I should know, I posted it! - and no one is discussing YOU (well one post says they didn't think the original poster, that being you, had understood what he was saying); this thread was brought up and linked. People are free to read it and see what they think, discuss, whatever... If anyone started attacking you, they would be warned/banned and their posts would be subject to editing.

I appreciate you speaking your mind and am glad for the opportunity to reply. I do think some of what you keep saying is incredibly misleading about myself and others at Whedonesque, however.

"...those who hold views different than the views of the majority should not be made to feel unwelcome... if you find yourself discussing politics with other Browncoats, please take a moment to think about those who are feeling shut out because of their beliefs."

/agreed.

Don't let them get you down. You believe what you wish, regardless of other people's acceptance of it or not. The more you worry about what they say, the more power you give them over you. If people want to be rude on one extreme, or simply have an opposing viewpoint, I say let'em. Challenge them, argue with them if you wish, but if not, don't worry about it. There's just too much to life to spend it worrying about what other people are saying.

If you think that's funny, you should know the context of it. He's a friend from church--kind of a redneck one, not the brightest bulb, but a good guy nonetheless. So we're having a BBQ at his place out in the country and we're going to cap the evening off with a bonfire. He's got the wood all stacked up, but doesn't want to bother with kindling, so he just dumps gasoline on it (at this point, I start getting nervous). He decides that it would be a great idea to light the thing up with a "mazel tov" cocktail, so he gets a cinder block (to hurl the incendiary device at) and puts it amongst the firewood. Then he fills a soda bottle with gasoline and stuffs a t-shirt it it. About this time, I get very nervous indeed and tell him not to light that sucker untill all the gas has dried. He declines, sparks his lighter and the next thing you know, his arm disappears inside a fireball. He freaks out and heaves the bottle without aiming, so it misses the cinderblock and bounces harmlessly off a log. Of course, the t-shirt is still burning, and there's a tremendous "whoosh!!" as the gasoline-soaked logs catch fire. I look down at the base of the thing, and what do I see but the soda bottle full of gasoline with the t-shirt still stuck in it--but now it's so hot that I can actually see the glass expanding and contracting. Now I'm really worried--if the gas in there doesn't leak out, but reaches it's combustion point, it will explode and fling shards of glass in every direction. So I tell my buddy about this. "No problem!" he replies. He runs in the house and gets his .45 and comes back out. He starts blazing away, trying to hit the bottle. It took him three shots to break the thing while all his redneck buddies stood around whooping it up (I took shelter behind a tree, just in case he didn't hit the thing in time). Sheesh.

YEAH!!!!! Either by design or genetics, or whatever it is, some folks is gay. I ain't a problem with 'em- I ain't much a problom with NOBODY for bein' somethin' I ain't! I have gay friends- Hell, I am WILLING to give/take punches for 'em. If the folks at Whedonesque want to be bigoted pricks just cuz some folk don't like folk bein' gay, let 'em be. Don't bother givin' 'em the time of day.
I respect that they welcome gay folks an' all, but... That respect goes down a few pegs for simply reversin' the process- hatin' on folks what don't like other folk for being gay!
It ain't right.
In short:
Fuck 'em.
