GENERAL DISCUSSIONS

If you had the power to bring back any dead character from any of Joss's shows, who would you pick?

What if Joss was able to bring back every one of his shows in some live-action form? What if it was mainly due to his fiercely loyal fans, and as a thank you, he decides to put his integrity aside for a bit and offers to bring back 1, and only 1, beloved character?

Out of all three shows, who would you choose?

Just kidding, I'm not gonna be that mean (unlike those who poll about choosing favorite songs in OMWF--you know who you are!). Go ahead and choose one from each show, or two shows, or whatever you wish.

Wash.

No, wait....

Anya.

No, wait....

Illyria

No, wait...

Wesley.

No, wait...

Fred.

Actually, that's a really hard question. I thought my final answer would be Fred...but I don't want Fred without Wesley. If I could have those two, then that would be final. But only one? Wash? But only because I know less of him than I do Anya. I had 3.1 seasons of Anya and 11 eps of Wash. I would like to see how Wash developed as a character.

I'd choose Tara. I really liked her, especially watching her grow from a shy, self-depreciating girl into a strong, confident woman who knew her own mind - and her magick!

Plus Willow's reaction would be priceless

Wash. Without question.

But as a very cose second, Wesley. Followed by Cordelia. Tara ranks up there too, but I think I'd pick those three first.

Edit: Stupid me, forgot to add Fred. But even her I could deal with before Wash and Wesley. I don't what it is exactly, but I can't seem to imagine either show without those two.

Ok desktop hippie, she wasnt so whiney in the later episodes but she was a bit "too nice" for my liking. I like my heroes to have flaws, thats what I love about Firefly, you never know if your BDH is going to do the right thing or not.

Thats why Star Trek cannot quite match it, life is just a little too perfect for my liking and the chars always "do the right thing".

Ill give Tara a bone, she is a very good singer(see musical episode).

Ah, LiveBrown, I see. That's actually what I liked about her!

Yes, a show full of perfect, good hearted people is pretty boring, but Tara was only one character and she wasn't perfect. She was certainly "nicer" than most characters, but that was really her way of hiding, of blending into the background and not being noticed. No one had a bad word to say about her. Because no one had much of anything to say about her. At first, anyway.

It also stemmed partly from the fact that Tara represented Willow's better nature, the same way Dawn was the voice of Buffy's human side. So Tara always had to make the right choice and be the responsible good girl, because all the subtle tensions between her and Willow built up over the years to show how Willow was getting deeper and deeper into places she should never have gone.

I think Tara was a proto-Kaylee character. Like Kaylee, she believed just about everyone was a good person. It meant she couldn't see some of the terrible mistakes people were making around her - especially Willow. Knowing this, it makes my head spin to think what Joss had planned for Kaylee!

...I'm babbling like a moonbrain. Gotta learn to stop the obsessive Buffy character posting. Sorry for the threadjacking!

WASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't care about the other shows, this may be an unpopular opinion but if he killed off the entire cast of buffy and Angel there would be no tears. But the moment Wash died I was numb and couldn't enjoy the rest of the movie. I'm not even sure I want another movie with him gone. If he brought Wash and Book back permanately I would be the happiest camper in the whole wide world.

If you gotta kill off another char in the Verse Joss, (be it in comics or a movie) get rid of Simon, I wouldn't mind.

Let the flaming begin.

I really feel that Joss killed off a full extra character when he "killed" the marriage. Only show I've seen to display a real marriage. Or at least one somewhat like mine. In some scary ways.

I have two: Anya and Book.

Anya's character was growing. She was really trying to understand the mortal condition. She went into that battle because she wanted to...she wouldn't have done that three years prior. No way.

Book was an enigma. There's a lot I wanted to learn from and about him. He was a good soul with a grey past. He made me think of the Jolee character from KOTOR.

Sorry about Wash, Cordy, Tara, Wes and the rest. I was upset about each of them. Tara's death was heartwrenching. I loved Wes. Sorry. Book was taken from us too soon and Anya was on the cusp of becoming a better being.

I guess it's time to post my own opinion.

Which would be...Wesley.

Cordelia was by far the most devastating death to me of any show. Even more than Fred, Joyce, Tara, or Anya (though I loved them all). I really felt Cordy was the heart of ANGEL. I should've seen it coming but didn't really, and once it did it made me see how much I truly loved the character. I now accept that the character is done though.

I actually felt Anya had come full circle. I was sad, but I'm okay with her death.

At the time of "Not Fade Away", I was numb (after months of anger and rage) from both the news of the cancellation and also the 'newer' news that I'd learned in TV Guide that one of Angel's group would not survive. I suspected it would be Wes. But unfortunately, I was too numb to feel it at the time. It hit me more later, I think, when I found out it only happened because of the cancellation...one thing that never should've happened did so because of another thing that shouldn't've happened.

To resurrect him in some form would be, for me, a symbol of correcting the whole thing.

As for SERENITY, it's hard to say I'd want Wash back. Don't misunderstand, I loved him, but it's a different type of world than BUFFY and ANGEL. I can't think of a way to bring Wash back, considering the way he died, that would be believable. Book, on the other hand, had some type of connections with the government. I don't think it's entirely out of the realm of possibility that they'd have a way to bring him back to life, especially considering the things they did to River. Plus, I'd love to find out what those connections are!

I've only watched Seasons 1-6 of Buffy and I haven't even finished Season 1 of Angel so I probably shouldn't have read this but oh well, too late.

From what I've seen Tara for sure. It's hard not to say Wash but the way Joss killed Tara was so cruel. He put Amber Benson in the credits for that one episode that she died so you thought she'd be around for a long time and then boom... gone. She and Willow had just gotten back together it wasn't fair! Plus Tara was just the coolest, and her death made Willow go crazy and I hate it when Willows upset.

Also someone who was a great character but short-lived was Doyle (assuming that he doesn't come back in Seasons 2-5 of Angel).

One thing I must say about Joss while we're on the subject is that he makes you really feel for the characters. Honestly, I didn't think I was physically capable of crying for more than an hour until I saw Becoming Part 2. I also love how he isn't afraid to kill the main character... several times.

Important people don't do field work.

Book, Wesley, Fred.

In that order.

I felt slighted when I went to see Serenity in the Arlington Drafthouse (that was so cool, by the way!) and everyone was up in arms about Wash, and not one peep about Book.

Wes was just awesome. He was the most pragmatic of the group, I felt, and he knew what to do to get the job done.

And Fred...well, that chick is hot!

wash, wesley (*sob*) and anya.

and cordelia.

the others I'm not that fussed about, I was sad for fred (more for wes' reaction actually) but then we got illyria so that was cool. tara always kind of grated on me, I disliked joyce from the beginning, book was wonderful and I still want to know about him, but it didn't upset me as much as wash, ms calendar was ok but I didn't pine for her, doyle was lovely but he had a good hero's death and I got over that years ago...

but wesley was the most consistantly developing character throught the series', think how much more he could have grown. plus he's so incredibly sexy

anya was, to quote andrew: a feisty waif with a fiery temper and a vulnerable heart that she hides even from herself... what's not to love?

cordy had just grown into the strongest, warmest, bravest woman in all three series when she was taken from us

and wash... goes without saying

No one's said this, perhaps because we're all in denial, but I'd say bring back Angel himself.

We discussed this on one of the other threads, but I very much interpreted the series finale to suggest that Angel, Gunn, Spike and Illyriah were all killed (more or less confirmed by special features and commentary tracks). So I'd say Angel.

Wesley's death was damn beautiful - I'd keep him dead for the elegance of the writing. Same with Fred.

You know, Irishwash, I never thought about any of the villains! And The Mayor was excellent. I wouldn't mind seeing Jubal Early again either.

Awintory, I agree with you on what happened at the end of 'Not Fade Away'. Joss has been *very* vocal about saying that it was *not* a cliffhanger and was never intended to be taken as such. It was about doing the right thing against impossible odds not because you might by some miracle win, but because it's the right thing to do.

Cordelia's death nearly ripped my heart out, even though I felt her character lost a bit towards the end, that final episode of hers was just perfect. "Oh, and... you're welcome!" *sob* I was actually pretty annoyed at Fred's death, though her death was the most difficult one to watch, even tougher than Tara's (which was over pretty quickly after all... Fred really suffered) but I think it was worth it for Illyria. I loved that character, and would like to have seen more of her.

Wash and Anya were among my absolute favorite characters on their respective shows, but I really feel that Jonathan (Buffy) didn't deserve to die, especially not the way he did and after he was 'the good one' among the three nerds and we was saved by Buffy so many times, only to end up dead.

But seriously - WASH!! Poor Wash. Poor Zoe.

I never watched Angel - didn't get into the way I did with Buffy (and later Firefly). Perhaps Dawn should've died. She always annoyed the heck outta me.

The only actual deaths were Wes, Lindsey, and approx. ten minutes later, Gunn, who would've become a vampire in the tv movies that never happened. This was confirmed by more than one source, including Amy Acker and J. August Richards.

Joss has said, and I think Jeff Bell, too, that the ending wasn't changed at all from when they originally assumed they would be back for Season 6. He never specifically said who lived and died (other than the humans because we knew that already) because he planned to wait until he was ready and able to tell the story. Joss actually had big plans for the fallout of what Team Angel did in the finale that would've created plenty of story for Season 6. Maybe that will now be the central story for the Season 6 comics he's planning. The only (or main) thing that changed once they found out about the cancellation was Wes's death.
