Mornin fellow browncoats

Talked to my youngest son yesterday, said he's likely to go see "300" again for the third time. I can't help but think that if Serenity would have had the numbers that "300" has had that they'd be working on the BDM3 by now. They're already talking about a sequel to 300. Well not actually a sequel since everyone died in that show but another one like it. I'm thinking Custers Last Stand or sumpin like that you know in the Frank Miller style. Ok bad idea but my question, has "300" done so well because it was advertised so far in advance or maybe because of its different (Frank Miller) stlye? Maybe it's both. I'm thinking if Serenity had been promoted like 300 there may have been a lot more ppl go see it. Anybody have thoughts on this?

I do think we would have a BDM2 on DVD right now if Serenity was advertised just as much as 300 was. 300 had ads EVERYWHERE! Tv, Xbox Live, Playstation Network, Radio, posters, you name it.

Advertising is everything these days. And if Serenity had as much, there would ALOT more browncoats, movies, and maybe the tv series would come back.

Yeah, advertising does play into how big your movie will hit and be seen by everyone. But keep in mind that 300 used techniques that SERENITY used as well in order to get people excited. A lengthy reel at the Comi-Con and tons of Internet exposure. If 'Versal had made a MySpace account for SERENITY and had a shit-load of photos on it, then that would have definitly helped.

Going into it's opening weekend, 300 was actually on the same awareness level as SERENITY was. It wasn't a Marvel or DC title, and Frank Miller himself isn't exactly a household name. Only ubergeeks know of him. Not to mention the fact that it was another sword and sandals movie, which coming off of the domestic dissapointments of TROY and ALEXANDER would have spelled doom for the movie.

But one aspect of 300 that actually made me think that a sequel for SERENITY would be a bigger hit than the first on was the tech behind 300. It was another green screen movie where literally everything on screen except for the actors and costumes and props were all CG. I read that the shots of the Persian messengers riding towards Sparta was the only thing that wasn't shot on a soundstage in Montreal. But unlike SKY CAPTAIN or SIN CITY or to a lesser degree the STAR WARS movies (Lucas still went on location to shoot the Tattooine scenes and the palace shots in Tunisia and Italy, you wern't thinking that "Oh this is all CG." You were able to suspend your disbelief and think that this world existed for real. And with a $65 million dollar budget, no less.

So I think that with the tech behind 300, I think Joss could be able to make a sequel to SERENITY for equal or less amount than the original. Keep the ships interiors as practical, but everything else be shot on a soundstage.

Mind you, with that shooting aesthetic it could radically shift the tone of the second film, and not necessarily for the better.

I just think that the tech behind 300 could easily be applied to a sequel for SERENITY that could make it's chances of getting made more likely.

These movies can not be compared. One is a quirky sf/comedy, the other is a blood soaked action flix. Frank Miller's style is what sold this movie. Many people that never heard of him, 'till they rented/went SinCity, knew this would be great. The trailers were awesome. Serenity didn't have as many action scenes to put in trailers. Movie goers love to see action. Not to mention Joss' style can be lost on some people, were as blood and action rarely are...........

You are right REGINAROADIE,but, yep there's always a but :) ppl who didn't know who FM was were told that he was the same guy that brought "Sin City" to the big screen. That,I think had a lot more ppl interested because of its huge success. If Frank Miller keeps it up he will become like the 600 pound gorilla. He'll get to do anything he wants

I remember when we did the video contest here at FFF.net there was a fanvid that was a Serenity trailer that took what action scenes that Serenity had and put them to very stirring music. It definitely got my blood up. I think the manner in which Uni tried to sell Serenity as a quirky, funny, yet there's a dangerous girl movie maybe backfired. I know it was a quirky, funny, different kind of scifi movie, but I don't think it should have been advertised that way. We needed to hook viewers with a conventional big action, blood and big music trailer. Then word of mouth could have done the rest.
All the trailers I saw for 300 were soaked in blood stirring action and music. That's what sells.

I was so hoping that Joss' success with WW would do this same thing for him. We'll have to hope that what he comes up with next will do it for him. Then he too can do what he wants to do!
