GWEK

Greetings, folks! We've been on a bit of a hiatus since the end of 2006, but last week we aired "Shards," our first new episode for 2007! Up next week is "Trap," and we're hoping to get the rest of Season Two out to y'all on a roughly bi-weekly basis.

To read our most recent episode, click here (it's 50+ pages, so it may take a minute):

http://www.stillflying.net/Scripts/s2/215.pdf

Or, if you're new to us, you can read our Season One episodes (picking up right after "Objects in Space"), by opening up the "virtual DVD set" here:

http://www.stillflying.net/?page=discs&season=1

For those of you who are not familiar with our project, Still Flying is a fan-based site dedicated to a "virtual continuation" of Joss Whedon's "Firefly" in the form of scripts of additional episodes. We've rounded out Season One, completing it with seven new episodes (including a season finale based on "Serenity: Those Left Behind" from Dark Horse Comics).

We've produced 22 episode-length scripts since December 2005, which means we’ve got more than a THOUSAND pages of Firefly script to share with y’all! We hope that those of you who haven’t been along for the ride will stop by and pay a visit.

Our current season, Season Two, is dedicated to exploring the question, "What would things have been like if Joss Whedon had been able to tell the story of "Serenity" (recently voted the best sci fi movie of all time in an online poll) in 22 episodes rather than 2 hours?" Our story takes you to most of the same places the movie does, but the path along the way will be a little different, and a good bit longer.

We strive to mix Whedon's canon with new material to keep things fresh and exciting, and based on the feedback on our forum, we've been doing a pretty good job!

With 15 of Season Two’s 22 episodes behind us, we’ve seen some old friends and more than a few old enemies. We can't promise that we'll entertain you as much as Mister Whedon would have, but you should know that this project has been put together by those who care about the show, and we're taking this bird up out of love.

Like most Browncoats, we know that Whedon will return to us with another movie, book, or some other way to continue the tale he started in "Firefly." Until that time, we'll be here. We will hold the line.

We can't show you exactly how Joss Whedon would've done it, but we can tell you...

"Here's how it might have been..."

The latest script was absoutly fantastic. Very drak and gritty.

You virtual Firefly guys are doing an excellent job so far. captured the cast well.

*sigh* I dunno....The stories are well-plotted and spot-on in character, but I've still had a hard time reading the last few - with every episode my heart breaks for River all over again. I do hope they make it to Miranda soon.

This entire season has been absolutely riveting -- you guys are as close to canon as fanfic can get. (Is there an icon for "love you to death" or "high five" or "woot"?)

Thanks for still flying :)

It feels like the writers at VFF have really found their groove with thier 2nd season - the last 3 eps in particular have felt very canon-ish imho. Plus, they've added some art! Never before seen type stuff - where else can you get new Firefly?

As heartbreaking as these eps. are for all characters, especially the exploitation and treatment of River(by the Alliance and now Mal and Co.) and Inara (by the Alliance/Guild and now the Operative) they are probably truest in tone, maybe not in content, to Joss' vision. Difficult to read at times...yes, but enjoyable none the less.

Hi, folks. We're a few days behind schedule due to technical difficulties, but our newest episode is available:

2x16 - Trap
Written by David Elmer
Art by Mary McKay Eaton

When Inara Waves Mal for assistance, Serenity heads to Bena, where the crew suspects a trap is waiting for them.

Sound familiar? Most of us know the basics of the tale, but that's part of what our Virtual season Two is about: even if you think you know the story, we've got twists and turns waiting for you! Maybe you've always wondered what was going on back on Serenity while Mal was playing dress-up... Well, here's your chance to find out!

Hope y'all enjoy the episode. Next up... Well, let's just say you can expect to see a different side of a certain Shepherd.

Keep flying,

George

This is a great ep that successfully answers many of those "huh?", "why?", and "how?" questions that we have in regards to Inara's rescue and escape. The witty banter between Mal and Inara alone is worth the price of admission. Kaylee's and Zoe's reaction to their return is even funnier, especially "they're back" (reminded me of the Poltergeist II tagline), from Kaylee. And "Mal's like a monster" since you left. Zoe's eye rolling at them (like frackin grow-up we're in a crisis here) Hilarious! Simon recognizing that Inara's well being is as important to Mal, as his sister's life is to him, and offering to help. As he had accussed Mal earlier of not caring about anyone. Inara's and Simon's unspoken understanding and friendship is very touching (future canon, I understand, that never had time to develope.) Zoe instinctively knowing what Jayne was up to and stepping easily into Captain's role. Anyway, enough spoilers. If you're reading all this... go read the episode! You won't be disappointed.

Bumping this back to the top of the page by saying that I strongly encourage everybody to check out our latest episode, 'Trap' (2x16). To date, it's our most 'canon-heavy' episode, but it also does some things with that canon that I don't think you'll see coming.

EPISODE 2x17: “TESTAMENT”
Written by Matt Engstrom
Directed by Thomas Cohn and DC Washington
Art by Mary McKay-Eaton
“Book’s Prayer” culled from the “SERENITY” movie script by Joss Whedon

Shepherd Book confesses.

*****

We're back with our newest episode, which has been months--maybe years--in the making.

Almost since the beginning of this project, Matt Engstrom has been working on an episode in which we learn about Shepherd Book's past. We knew early on that we'd have to tread a fine line between letting revealing information to the audience and to the crew, and Matt hit on the idea of... well, I won't spoil it. I'll let you read it for yourself.

As with every episode, we strive to remain faithful to the continuity of both the Original Series and our Virtual Series, while at the same time throwing enough curveballs to keep the audience surprised (but not so many that they throw their hands up in the air in disbelief).

Staff members of our project have periodically been asked if we have access to any unproduced material from Joss Whedon and his crew, or if we've had direct contact with them to perpetuate the continuity. The joke answer is that, as head writer, I have Joss chained up in the cupboard. Or maybe it's not a joke (I mean, really, we haven't seen him much recently, have we?). I can tell you this, though: He definitely wasn't in my cupboard while this episode was being written... but folks might want to ask Matt a few questions.

Anyway, enough of my prattling on. There's no way I can do this episode justice in babbling about it, so just stop reading what I'm writing and go check out the episode already!

Keep flying!

"gas giants" is a term usually used to describe the Jovian planets, Saturn, Uranus, etc... not a solar mass (dwarfs, nebulas, etc)

That's what I found odd. The usage of terminology.

Also, "shadows" are "cast" by eclipses (blocking light), not created by rotations.

Semantics, not science?

Until now, I hadn't really thought much about the Book character. Yes, he seemed stalwart, trustworthy, preacher with a mysterious past, etc. -- a nice counterbalance and addition to the other BDHs, but not actually that interesting to me on his own.

"Testament" wrenched me out of one mindset into another in true Joss fashion. I've said it before and I'll say it again -- yours is the best fanfic out there.

MOMENT OF SILENCE is just that - that breathless, tense moment before all hell breaks loose! This episode definitely embellishes and enhances the movie, and the words of St. Jayne may just compete with Mal's "St. Crispin's Day" speech. This one choked me up, writers...Jayne's grace SHOULD have been in the movie, DAMN IT! Book and Jayne were friends!...you couldn't have spared a minute, Joss?...I know, I know, it was all about Mal's heroic arc and River's "whatever we're suppose to believe she is now". I think we got it.

O.K. sooo...My favorite part is Zoe's and Wash's "until death do us part...move on if you need to" talk (sniff), juxtiposed with Mal's and Inara's "if I die, I will come back and haunt you, forever" exchange. I'm not sure if that was intentional, but it struck me as humorous and it speaks volumes about how the four of them view life, relationships, and love, differently.

These eps are great! Keep them coming, please!

I'd just like to tell all of you at stillflying.net that your professionalism, adherence to canon, and your feel for the characters and world of "Firefly" make the Virtual Series some of the best fanfic I've ever read. Sometimes I forget it's not Joss himself showing me around the 'verse. Every new episode, I'm amazed by what you all have done.

I just finished reading "Moment of Silence," and again I tip my hat to you. That one line "What about the children?" was a punch to the gut, and pretty much epitomized what this episode did for story. Everything that was passed over in the movie for the sake of time is on display here in all of its pain and misery and humanity. Not to mention that exchange between Mal and Inara -- "I promise I will haunt you" -- is classic stuff. Excellent job, yet again.

When I was reading Jayne saying grace, I started tearing up so much that people around me started to wonder what was going on. From reports, this actually happened to someone else.

Also, finding everyone dead was a HUGE emotional impact, probably bigger than in the movie. The writing was so detailed that I could see every moment in my mind's eye, it was that good. Another tip of the hat!

Glad you guys are enjoying! I wish I could claim credit for all of "Moment of Silence", but a lot of it is Joss's own words (from the shooting script and Kitchen Sink versions). "I will haunt you," for example, is his (although Mal's "grant exit" was my addition).
