SRNTYVERSE22

I am a Firefly/Serenity newbie and ever since I first watched the series and the movie I cannot seem to get Reavers out of my head. So my random/weird question is...please do not judge...do Reavers reproduce? Now someone correct me if I am wrong but I remember somewhere in the series or the movie it was mentioned that Reavers have been around for around 10-12 years. How in the world can they last that long if it is explained in the movie that some people on Miranda had a adverse affect to the gas and turned into Reavers so if they are the only people who turned into Reavers how can there be so many and how do they keep their "race" alive?
Stupid question...yes. Please don't give me any flack lol. I know it is a dumb question already I just want to dicuss the movie and series because I am so obsessed with it.

I don't think they reproduce, other than creating other reavers through torture, etc. Aggression tends to be a male-dominated area, so I doubt there are many reaver women.

This is pretty much one of those things that has been debated for a long time. I have heard a multitude of different ideas. Normal reproduction, kidnapping of people, the Bushwacked osmosis way, maybe they don't at all. The only true answer is in the mind of Joss.

Think vampires.

Once bitten (and not devoured)the victim may become a reaver by the light of the full verse moon. Or anytime really :) and least we forget, there is a whole universe of this stuff.

COSMICFUGITIVE

Welcome aboard SrntyVerse22! It's cool to have you amongst our ranks.

With regards to your question, I recall Mal's explanation in 'Bushwhacked.' Basically, the only option that a victim of a Reaver attack would have in that situation, is to become like them.

In real life, there are documented cases of people that have gone missing and have survived in the wild. They adopted animalistic traits of the species that they've co-existed with, in order to survive in that environment.

With regards to Reavers, it's conceivable that those victims who weren't on Miranda, would be forced to behave like their captors. They would probably learn to survive on a really terrifying, twisted level.

Reavers are super aggressive, and that's the only language that they understand. I imagine there would be a lot of infighting and territorial behaviour amongst their own numbers too. Every day would be a struggle for Reavers and their victims alike.

There's been no mention from Joss Whedon that Reavers reproduce. It seems impossible given their radioactive environment. I don't know medicine, BUT if they were able to, the offspring would be pretty nasty.

I hope this has been helpful.

DAYVE

Welcome SrntyVerse22 - how about SV22..?

First, let me say that there are no stupid questions - all are welcome - it's how we learn, right?

Second, let me say that there are plenty of stupid answers... like the one I'm about to give you....

I think the questions about the Reavers are not so clearly answered, certainly not in the movie and I'm not sure if there is much background material in any of the supplemental reading. Actually, your question has crossed my mind as well.

Without getting all morbid and creepifying... my short answer is no - no babies - even with all the raping going on, I doubt that any pregnancy would be carried to term - you know, with the cannibalism and all…. So if no babies – there must have been enough of those crazy dudes from Miranda to sustain a quasi-reaver-society - ruled by what? The baddest of the bad…? There must have been some sort of organized madness to them, or they would have simply eaten each other till they were all gone - !

Perhaps, Joss will someday give us some thoughts from the Reaver perspective… that could be entertaining… a typical day in the life of Bob the Reaver… hey, maybe even a spin-off…

Ok, so I told you there were stupid answers… hope you get a better one…

I’m dayve, and I’ll be here all week….

GRIZWALD

And then the thought of an infant surviving to term and then being at the mercy of those "parents" is horrific.

DRACONUS

I've wondered this myself. And I've heard plenty of arguments both against and for. Even so far as to say that certain women are kidnapped and kept as breeders. But Grizwald makes a good point. Even if somehow the Reavers did reproduce, I have a hard time imagining the kid surviving very long in that environment.

Now that being said, we're fairly certain that the Reavers are fairly intelligent. They fly ships, work in teams, even lay traps. So it's possible that the would have an interest in the continuation of their species, and would figure out some way to not only have children but raise them as well. Maybe a group of breeding Reavers/kidnapees and a group of teacher/babysitter Reavers?

Until we get a firm answer from Joss, this topic is completely open to interpretation and imagination, so anyone else have any ideas?

May you have enough.

For some reason Reavers captivate me lol. Thanks everyone for the answers. It would be amazing to get a better understanding as what a typical day in the life of a reaver would be!HA!
How their hierarchy is, which one of them came up with their traps, who pilots the planes...just some interesting questions I have lurking in my head.
