I asked my wife what she wanted for Mother's Day. She winked at me and said: "I wannaWii"

I said: "You want to what?"

"I     want     a       Wii"

"Whaa?"

"Wii"

"We what?"

So the box I ordered just arrived with a Wii, a charging dock for remotes, high-def video cable kit, "Madden 07", "Need for Speed Carbon", "Rapala Tournament Fishing". The Wii box includes "Wii Sports".

So. What did I just get her? OK, it's a Pong game on steroids. Did I get what I needed to get?

Is there any accessory that is a "must have" for a Wii?

Is there a defined quintessential Wii game?

Oh, and The Legend of Zelda is a must!!!

I thought Red Steel was pretty good.

Wii Play is a cool game, it has 9 ball on it so I immediatly fell in love.

I also liked Trauma Center, it's a cool little surgery sim game.

I'll look these up. Probably get one or two.

My wife would give me the evil eye if I purchased a surgery game. All the more reason...

Hey Flyvote, that's a pretty kick-ass Mother's Day present!

A second Wii remote (aka "wiimote") might be nice, if you plan to play together (ie, playing bowling or tennis together in WiiSports). Make sure that all the wiimotes you get have wrist straps, too -- trust me, you'll need them. There are little gel sleeves you can get for the wiimotes that make them easier to hold and easier to clean. Also, component cables (like these: http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Wii-Component-Video-Cable/dp/B000JJRV90
/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-4323352-4420810?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1178733985&sr=8-1
) are the best quality video cables for the Wii, if you're worried about that sort of thing.

You can also get your Wii online using something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Wi-Fi-USB-Connector/dp/B000MXMNG4/ref=s
r_1_10/002-4323352-4420810?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1178734284&sr=1-10
That opens up a lot of functionality on the Wii, including a web browser, the ability to communicate with friends and family who have their Wiis online, and the ability to connect to any Nintendo DSs you have.

As for games, you've got some good titles there. I think WiiSports is the quintessential Wii game. I played the new WarioWare title for the Wii at a party and it was ridiculously fun. I've also tried out the new SSX title, SSX Blur, and I've found the controls a bit difficult to master but overall the game is fun.

That is great, CaliKaylee. It looks like 2nd remote is a must. The on-line thingy might be a cool idea, also. I'll investigate.

Interesting...

I just Wi-Fi - ed my Wii online. The built in wireless is just the best!

Legend of Zelda is a MUST buy!
They also have a version of Busta Move!

They have a few good titles but you have about half of them.

Oh controllers for the Game Cube (they make a wireless version for around $20)in case you want to play any of those as well as the games on the virtual console.

A good sized flash card for it for pics and such.

I am hoping they come out with a keyboard soon like the 360 has, for the web browser.

I want Tiger Woods Golf personally

How did you find one?

If you buy the Wii Play game it comes with a Wiimote.

It makes more sense to buy the game seeing as a Wiimote is $39.99, and the game is $49.99.

Dosen't come with a nunchuk though.....

Help me out, here. It'll also play game cube games?

Perhaps I'm being optimistic - it has a USB port and keyboard USB stuff is usually pretty run-of-the-mill. Would a vanilla USB keyboard work? Care to give it a try on yours?

OK Wii Play to get Wiimote. Nunchuck? You are putting me on overload. What, in the context of Wii as opposed to martial arts, is a (Wii) nunchuck?

Yes it will play Game Cube games but not with the new Wiimote. You need a Game Cube one. They have jacks for them in the back but would get in the way unless you use a wireless. They even go right in the main game slot.

SD cards go in the front. Can upload pics and save game progress. unfortunately not Virtual Console games themselves cuz taht would rock!

X-Box has a keyboard that jacks into their controller. The nunchuck jack is a weird shaped USB so a regular keyboard would not work. I am pretty sure that there are USBs on the Wii (I will look) but I would prefer it jacked into the wireless Wiimote for ease of where I could use it.

This system is soooooooo much fun. My 5 year old loves Wii Sports adn likes watching me "beat the bad guys" in Zelda.

EDIT: the Nunchuck is the second part of the controller. Sells for $19.99 and plugs into the Wiimote. It has an analog thumb stick on it and a few more buttons because the Wiimote basically is an old NES Controller with 1 extra botton on the bottom.

The nunchuk is that oddly shaped thing that plugs into the Wiimote, the thing with the control stick on it.

I just checked my Wii (yay for working from home!), and there are two USB ports on the back. I tried plugging in my run-of-the-mill USB keyboard (it came with my husband's Dell -- gah, I need a new keyboard!) and using it to input the name of a new Mii, and the Wii didn't seem to recognize the keyboard. I don't have the wi-fi set up yet so I don't know if that would have worked with the webbrowser. There might be some info online about getting a keyboard to work with the Wii, I'll look around later if I have some time.

My credit card is glowing. What is that burning smell?

The Wii has two USB jacks. This one is a gift, so I'm only eye-balling it, not turning it on. I would guess that a wireless USB keyboard might work.

Gah! Getting one sure wasn't.

A little ergonomic thing with a cord, "thumb joystick", and two triggers? Got one. (Whew!)

Actually, it is the gold-plated one. I got it from my days as a manager at B&N; it is the standard fully tricked out table one finds in every kids section in B&N in the country. Retails for $850, and we are selling it with oodles of trains; some retired.

:surprised:
Fly, I was under the assumption you burp $20 bills. Unlimited credit cards, etc.
Whatever. Wife is worth it.

No a keyboard will not work yet. and this is the info (netjoke not real) I have found on Nintendo's possible solutions: http://www.thespoof.com/news/spoof.cfm?headline=s5i16968

Currently Nintendo is not working on a solution that I can find.

Yes you should have 1 nunchuck right now with the initial buy but they are sold seperate from the Wiimotes when you go to get your second one.

I found mine by luck. I was on the other side of the state and was stopping for luch and a McDonalds. It was in a Wal-Mart parking lot so I said skip the gut rot I will just get some Beef jerky and move on. Of course no matter where I go I have to check out their electronics section and there they were. The guy was just stocking the 3 that their home office had mis-shipped (were not on their inventory manifest) so I grabbed one (after I got permission from Laurelin). 1 week after X-mas no less!

As far as the nunchuck goes, unless you plan on playing 2 player boxing on WiiSports or 2 player SSX Blur, you're probably ok with just the one for now. But theoretically, you would need one nunchuck for each wiimote, for any game that uses the two handed set up.

That is some serious stuff. We missed (or possibly ignored) the "Thomas" stuff with our little squirt.
