My family and I got to see/hear Joss' seminar last Saturday at Wesleyan University during his 20th reunion. (My 31st and my daughter's graduation.) His talk was titled "The Importance of Being Keanu" and was more serious than the title might have indicated. It was quite well-received.

Although few of the questions in the Q&A were Firefly-related, we did manage to corner him afterward and ask if we were ever going to find out how Book knows so much more than a Shepherd should about so many things.

Joss' answer: "Yes." He went on to explain that "when this thing gets moribund" the story would be continued, whether with the actors or in another medium.

Sounds good to me!

I'm finding that statement a little confusing.

The two meanings of moribund seem to be:

1) Approaching death; about to die.
2) On the verge of becoming obsolete:

What exactly is "this thing"?

He's said before that if there's no hope of a sequel, Book's secret (and Inara's) would be told in some form. Part of the reason - a BIG part of the reason - I won't give up hope is because neither story has been told, which means HE still believes in a sequel, so I still believe in a sequel.

My first guess is to say that 'this thing' is a reference to the whole 'How's a preacher know so much about killin' ' thing. *shrugs* But that doesn't make any sense, because it'll always bug those of us who are left wondering, until we find out. So that leaves me to then think of the whole 'FIREFLY/SERENITY' saga. (again) *shrugs* I know i've not spent much time thinking of Serenity's last flight, but I'm sure Joss has some sort of 'ending' for Mal and his ship. Whether he dies by way of the Alliance, marries Inara, catches up with Niska again, or gets ANOTHER ship after SERENITY bites it in some way.... who knows? Maybe he buys a second ship, to expand the business, and Jayne gets to command his own..... haa haa...never mind.

Clearly, I'd love to see Ron Glass on screen again, in some capacity, as Book. I know many are fans of the graphic novel avenue, which is ok, if that's all we're gonna get. But I'm not one of those folk.

See there? That's a right shiny view of things! I'm glad you posted that, because I think I tend to agree w/ that and what you said.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

I'm fairly certain Joss has many more Firefly / Serenity stories in him. :)

Whoops.
That last post nearly broke the thread.
Ignore that, 'kay?

I was just going to say to PR that Tim Minear told Inara's story, in part. Unless it was a lie. Either way, it was really... interesting......

The seminars at Wesleyan (yes, CT) were open to all - it was one big Commencement and Reunion weekend. This seminar was at 2pm on Saturday, and there were probably 200 people present.

As for the "moribund" comment, I wondered about it, too. When he said it, I took it to mean that once whatever excitement (DVD sales?) died down a bit about Firefly and Serenity, they'd have to decide in which direction to go next.

There sure was a lot of buzz among the Buffy fans about their graphic novels, so maybe that's the way it's going to come out.

He did mention during the seminar, though, that television was his favorite medium, as he had time to develop the characters. (Damn you, FOX!)

Hehe! Whatever Book's secret is, I still believe that it has a great deal to do with River's name as one of the last words he spoke as he laid dying--speaking of getting moribund!

Or, perhaps the even greater question: will Serenity ever continue? The wonderful part of the this industry is that you'll never know.

The toxin, yeah, I heard. That's not really her story, though, just a possible thing that could have been in her needle. It's not why she left Sihnon (I don't think) and it's not a concept they were going to be allowed to run with, either, because it was 'too dark'. And, since he won't confirm something he let slip once, I still have that hope.

For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, Tim Minear once said that they had planned on a storyline where Inara gets taken by Reavers and survives by injecting herself with a toxin that will kill anyone who has sex with her, so that when the Reavers try to 'rape her to death' they die instead. So the crew finds her shaking, beaten and torn up surrounded by dead Reavers. The network hated it and they really had to scrap that idea, but it was postulated that the toxin was what was in her black vial, and that's why she pulled it out when the Reavers were close.
I have a few problems with this storyline, myself. Not that it's dark (which it is) but that it didn't seem well thought-out. The toxin would have to work instantly, for one, to keep her from being brutalized beyond survival. It wouldn't work on female Reavers, for another, and they could still try to eat her and/or the crew. Unless it makes everything in her toxic in which case biting would have the same effect. But then how could something deadly be so widespread in a person's system and not harm them? It wasn't something they got to fully explore, so they didn't have the wrinkles worked out, but it seems off to me.
Regardless, now they won't talk about it. It was something Tim said before the movie was made and now he refuses to comment on it again, as do Joss and Morena, so I still think they're holding out for a sequel.

First word he said was yes.
I'm going with that.

PR, you're right as rain to say that Joss still has hopes to tell the story --else he'd tell us these secrets. I agree totally. He even said as much in the Firefly Companion Volume 2.

I think he wants to tell the story with the actors too, but in lieu of that I'll take what I can get. If it's graphic novels like the Buffy comics, so be it. It's Joss and Joss is boss.

As for moribund... *shrugs*

I'm willing to wait, I ain't going anywhere.

I'm with PR on this one.

Also, I get positively giddy that the description of moribund is dying or nearing death. That Joss uses the word yet implies that in his mind, the whole Firefly/Serenity shebang isn't even nearing death yet. Still very much alive and well, just waiting to see what medium it will be in.

"I'm going to you to go out with me tomorrow, and I'm kind of nervous about it."
"If it helps, I'm going to say yes."
"It does. It creates kind of a comfort zone. Will you go out with me tomorrow?"
"Ooh. I can't."
"See, I like a girl who's unpredictable."

I read moribund as not selling as well ...

Joss :- "Hey we need to make more Firefly stuff"

Joss has also said that when there is no hope of contining the story that he will get drunk & go online & tell all of the Firefly secrets, so I believe there will be more Firefly/Serenity as long as Joss hasn't got drunk.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Well, I, like PR, will remain hopeful for that sequel. I will hold out hope until Joss shows up at my door and tells me face to face that there is no hope, then maybe even after that.

The whole Inara/toxin/pile o' dead Reavers story that Tim told was not only dark, but like PR said, it just doesn't really seem to click. It may have been an idea they had at one point, but I don't think it would have seen the light of day.

It may take that, I suppose. During the Q&A session someone asked if he could tell one of the many story ideas he mentioned he has in his head. His reply: "I get paid for that stuff! You think I'm going to give it away for free?"

The "this thing" he's referring to may be the option on movie sequels to Serenity. I'm pretty sure they expire this coming September, at which point, knowing he doesn't need to save the ideas for movie sequels, he may use them either in a comic book or (my secret hope) on direct-to-DVD TV episodes.

I have also heard it postulated that the Inara vial is a form of "eternal youth" serum that would be deadly as an overdose.
That would explain why, even tho' Inara and Nandi were contemporaries on Sihnon, Nandi seemed older than Inara. Would also explain why someone as young (looking) as Inara was closing in on high priestess status at Madrassa House. Would also explain why someone like Inara might want to fly under the radar on a boat like Serenity. And why she liked a boat with a few miles on 'er. Lots of interesting places to go with a twenty-something looking Companion who's actually forty-something.
