Hi Everybody,
How're you all doing?

First of all, I am really not sure if I should talk about this here. After a bit of contemplation, I thought I will post this anyways.

I recently came across an animation series of the adventure/fantasy genre called "Avatar The Last Airbender". I am sure that many of you must have heard of it. It is being shown on Nickelodeon. Here's the homepage: http://www.nick.com/shows/avatar/index.jhtml

Further, there's a fan-site comparable with our fff.net : http://www.theavatarportal.com/ To begin with, you can also watch some episodes in the streaming format on this website: http://www.theavatarportal.com/episodes.html and also at http://www.nick.com/turbonick/index.jhtml?searchTerm=Avatar

The main reason why I am posting about this animation series is that I have become an instant and huge fan of this show, in the exact manner as it happened for Firefly. Despite the show is aimed at an audience of 6-11 yrs, it has been very successful in adult audience too!(I am 27!) The show has quite an adult undertone(not a sexual one though), which is reflected in the dialogs, dilemmas and events depicted. In fact, entire families have become fans.(Parents, I am quite sure that this will be great series to watch with your kids! In fact, I am going to send DVD's to my parents and girlfriend!) I totally love the series and earnestly recommend everybody to give it a shot.

The show were to get over in one season but the ratings were so high that it went for second season and it is going third. The third season was supposed to start in March 07, but hasn't started yet though! The older episodes are being show on Nick, so you don't have to necessarily buy DVD's. I am not sure of schedule.

The series is based in the fantasy world, divided in to four great nations. It has very catchy concepts!! I won't talk about them to prevent spoiling the fun.

If you watch the show and like it, please drop me a line!:-)

Hope you all have great time!

~Jari

I love Avatar and I'm 42.

I know I saw something about when the new season starts, but I can't remember when it was.

I like the show as well!

There is still no date for season three to start, although seeing as how April and May have gone by, it seems to be in fall. The season two boxset is scheduled to be released Sept 11th.

I love this show- don't know where it went, though, guess I just don't have the luck to catch it anymore. I'm a fan of Anime, so this one naturally set the seeds of fandom in me. And, Lo! The Voic Acting isn't butchered, FINALLY!!!

Oh WOW!! Trilogy will be awesome!!! Hope that live action will be as cool as the animation!!

By the way, folks! thanks everybody for showing interest and discussing this!

How if we keep this thread for posting Avatar news as and when we get them?!! At least we have East Asian culture common to both Avatar and Firefly!

Well, "Three Great Nations and one lone refugee" doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

Plus, I'm thinking that Book 4: Air (if/when we get it) will focus on Aang finding a "lost" colony of Air Nomads who have forgotten how to air-bend. The season would focus on Aang (after having spent three seasons mastering the other three elements) now coming full-circle and becoming a teacher as he reintroduces his apprentice to the basics of air-bending.

It'd be a nice little conclusion/post-script, since Book 3 will likely be about the invasion and fall of the Fire Nation (what with the coming eclipse and comet). As for that, I'm hoping Zuko gets his head on straight and ends up joining Aang and the rebels.

I mean, what Aang's group wants is to end the war, and what Zuko wants is his honor, his father's approval, and the Throne (in that order) --and his experiences in exile have made him realize how devastating the war is. It would make sense to form an alliance: Zuko gets to bring in the Avatar (winning his father's favour), and he could then use that newfound influence to stop the war.

Aang needs to learn fire-bending anyway, and between Iroh's wisdom and Zuko's drive, Aang couldn't have better teachers. Plus, he and Iroh seemed to get along pretty well in that last episode.

This would also put them in position to foil Azula's sudden-but-inevitable coup. After she kills their father (as we all know she's willing to), Zuko can step in and inherit the throne.

Avatar is indeed a great show (and I'm 39). It has lots of the elements that made Firefly great. Well placed action, character development, and lot's of snarky humor. I'm not sure if it's truly "anime" by definition...but it's the first cartoon that's captured me since Cowboy Bebop.
