FIREFLYGAL

I'm one of those Browncoats that saw Firefly on Fox - out of order. I was just wondering if those fans that watched it correctly:
a. thought that Kaylee would die from the gunshot wound
b. believed that Simon was the bad guy as things seemed to hint.

I aim to misbehave!

I never got to see Firefly on FOX. So I speak from viewing it on DVD's. It was clear from the original primiere episode, which is "Serenity", that Simon rescued his sister from the so called school run by the Aliance. Since Kaylee was shoot in this, the first episode, I figured she would survive. But as we all know you never know what Joss has in his mind. I'm glad Joss never killed any of the crew in the original series. They all had an important role to play in this series.

Since I did not see this on FOX I am wondering if they showed this episode on two separate nights, because on DVD they combine both parts one and two as one single episode.

Hey FFG,

I have only ever seen FireFly in the correct order because here in the UK, up until very recently the only way to see it was DVD.

So, the answers.

A) Pretty much thought Kaylee would make it through. She had been introduced as a very likeable character and I thought that killing her off at that point wouldn't have made sense. That was then of course. Nowadays I know not to second guess Joss.

B) I wasn't really sure about Simon. There was this aire of mystery at first. He could have been a bad guy, but there was something that didn't feel quite right about him being evil or part of what I began to understand as being the Alliance.

You were busy trying to get yourself lit on fire. It happens.

According to both IMDB and a few other sites, both parts of the pilot were aired together (on December 20).

In response to your first question, I thought Kaylee would PROBABLY be ok when she was shot. But then, when Mal said 'Kaylee's dead', I believed him. (Stupid me!)

And I didn't think that Simon was bad, I just thought he was slightly shifty and that he was hiding something.

Mal gives control of the ship to Zoe...
Mal: If I'm not back in an hour, you come, and you rescue me.
Zoe: What? And risk my ship?

I figured that seeing as Jewel had appeared on the opening credits, she was going to get more than 15 minutes in the series.

I thought Simon was going to be a poisonous influence in the crew, a la Lost in Space. Obviously this idea didn't last through the train job.

Fox started w/Train Job
and then after they announced that Firefly was canceled they finally showed the two hour pilot as the last aired episode....
and everyone I knew was screaming that it was so great, how could they do this!?!?!

Anyway, I did see the shows originally on Fox,
but I gave the Firefly DVDs to lots of friends and family,
and I would watch the 2 hour pilot with them.

They all did think that Simon looked suspicious at first,
and most of them cried out in protest because they were very worried that Kaylee would die.

I think Jewel Staite had been a beloved child star and one friend in particular had been totally thrilled to see her in the show and really freaked when she thought she might die!

So I would say, yeah: Joss had set things up so there were some real surprises...
which Fox ruined.

BTW I see the Firefly DVD set for sale at Target for just $16.99

thanks for the responses, keep 'em coming. It's very interesting to hear what happens when a show is watched in the correct order.

Good morning browncoats.

I’ll answer your question with what my thoughts were Fireflygal and I’ll ask a couple of my own.

a) Did I think Kaylee was going to die from the gunshot wound in the pilot eps? To be honest the first time I watched the eps I’d already seen the BDM so I knew that she was going to be around for the rest of the series. We had rented the FF series from Netfilx so it took the wife and I about two weeks to see all the eps. After that I went out and bought the dvd series. Now the second time I watched the pilot eps I had forgotten several of the scenes and when Mal Reynolds tells Simon that, “Kaylee’s dead!” I was floored. I knew that somehow she wasn’t dead but I had forgotten that he was only pulling Mr. Tams leg. I was stunned until the next scene where Mal and crew are laughing about his little lie to Simon on the ships bridge. I felt a lot better.

b) Simon evil? Well from the first time we meet him in the pilot eps he does have that sinister aurora around him. The dark shades, dressed all in black and when the ships ramp lifts the little port window frames his face almost like a mugshot. Then the mystery music plays. After that he keeps than evil little stare until he comes clean about the mystery in the box he’s smuggled aboard.

Now I’d like to add a couple of questions to the mix. And these are only to get ppls opinion of what they thought was going on and why Joss did them this way. They are both from the Serenity pilot eps.

a) When we first meet Inara she’s with a “John” on the planet of Persephone. When he begins to engage her with small talk we see that her mind drifts and it’s been pointed out that it’s Joss’ way of showing that she’s detached herself from any emotion or feelings from the situation at hand. Then again when she is aboard Serenity we see when she is bathing that she does this again. Does Inara somehow feel bad about her chosen profession? I know that she tells Malcolm that she doesn’t but that scene makes her seem to be withdrawn from what’s going on in her life.
b) The second thing is about Shepherd Book. In the pilot eps when he is going to release Dobson from the confines of the little cabin I get the feeling that he was going to tell him a lot more. That they were on the same side and in some way he was there to retrieve River also. Of course a blow to the head stopped him and his words at that time didn’t give anything away. Still I feel if he had been given the chance he would have confide a lot more to the lawman. It just didn’t happen that way.

Anyone have opinions about these?

Z
