yay.....

I saw a Soap Opera Digest while in line to get cookout supplies Saturday night at Wally-World, and on the cover was none other than our very-favorite Captain Tightpants. Apparently it's One Life To Live's 10,000th episode soon, and lots of people are going to be putting in an appearance as a part of it.

My reply to CMH on the last thread, posted after the Mandate:

Quote:

Well then, that wasn't bad at all...

I've been incredibly impressed with all the MMA I've seen (well, there's always a lame fight here or there, but as a sport it's quite impressive), so I guess my main worry would be about women's MMA not comparing to men's MMA. But I'll have to keep an eye out for women's matches. There's an MMA studio a few miles from my home, and they have a woman pictured on their webpage, but I wasn't sure if they actually had women training there, much less fighting. I'm impressed by anyone who has the discipline, drive, and endurance to compete at that level, even more so that most Olympic athletes. In my next life, I want to come back as Linda Hamilton from the second Terminator movie, heh.

I can see your point about mixed-gender units, and I don't disagree. I have a female cousin a few months younger than me who decided to go into the Army after high school, and again I admire her discipline, drive, and endurance. She ended up becoming a Korean translator and so hasn't been in any combat zones. The way our country is fighting wars these days, I don't think we should turn away anyone who volunteers for service and is fit to serve. But I don't agree with the idea that there's no difference between men and women, and for us to be "fair" to everyone, we have to have mixed-gender units. Some units I don't think it matters (not that I have any experience, just from what my cousin told me about her time stationed overseas), but I think it's silly to think that there's no difference between men and women, and no reason or circumstance in which it would be better to keep men and women separate.

As far as the crush thing, I think that's a weird part of human nature. No matter what we live through, evolution has created in us hormones that make us continue to think about creating the next generation of our species. And unfortunately, sometimes that manifests as teasing adults about crushes. We're a dumb species, sometimes.

(I'm sure someone here disagrees with me on this. Hopefully I haven't opened a huuuge can of worms in asking. We can all debate maturely, right?)

I hardly even touched on the incapabilities of women in combat, and in fact that point was brought up by a seperate party. As I said before, it's mostly a moot point. However, I gave a personal observation that females were not condusive to the military enviornment, and not neccisarily through any fault of their own.

Ok, so here's another imponderable: Should people not share unbiased observations just because other people don't like them? My observation was much less "I perceive Jews to be cheap" and much more "Inner city areas with large minority populations have high crime rates". Yeah, people might not like the implications of the second, but does that mean it shouldn't be said at all? Wasn't the original purpose of these Imponderable threads to share differing opinions based on people's eclectic personal experiences?

Just let me know if I'm off base here. I'll even agree to stop posting on these threads if people are tired of getting more than one side of an issue.

Hey, I was hugely impressed with CMH's response. Conversational, polite, well thought out, well written, and stated as an opinion. All good qualities of a mature debate, and all things I've seen people say in the past CMH isn't capable of. Either those people were wrong, or things have changed. Either way, I really did want to hear his opinion, and I was thrilled to read it. But if everyone else thinks we're walking on thin ice, I'm willing to drop the topic if CMH is.

CMH, thanks for your reply. I don't often get to interact with people in your line of work directly (my company has done contract work for the DoD, but that's several steps removed), so it's nice to hear your views. And if nothing else, we can agree on this: MMA rocks.

FlyVote - Can the increased crime rate of inner city areas with high minority populations be disputed? I don't think so. What can be disputed is whether or not those people are victims of poverty and environment, or just lazy and bad. THAT is where bias comes in.

The lack of discipline in mixed gender units is a commonly accepted observation by most (but definitely not all) in-house members. Go to Ft. Bragg and take a look around. Then go to Ft. Jackson. Look at Ft. Benning, and then look at Ft. Sam Houston. There are obvious differences. Again, what is more open to interpretation is whether or not this is the fault of the females, the males, or just the action of putting them together.

You want a biased opinion of mine? Ok, here: The people who say there's not any more crime in inner city minority areas are the same type of people who would say there's not a lack of discipline in mixed gender units. What types of people are these? People that are so afraid that acknowledging the problem will immediately place blame on one party that they'd rather just leave the issue unresolved by not acknowledging it. Irresponsible people, in short.

JQ - You just made a bad picture potentially worse. And the worst part of all is that I already chose the largest calibre rifle that I know of. Now we gotta move on to grenade launchers... and honestly I'm only personally familiare with the M203.

CK - I'll drop it, far be it from me to try and appease anyone, but a one sided conversation always gets people questioning my sanity...

... as if they wouldn't anyways.

Hey, I was just poking fun. At the both of you. I an avid CMH postifan. As I am with lots of folk around here. I've always maintained that people are too quick in their judgment of him. Not that I ever totally agree with him, but I am at least willing to hear him out and try to see what's informed his opinion.

Might I say CK, your posts (and you just may have set the record for longest ever on the last thread; check with HK, because she and CMH and I used to blather at great length. *sighs wistfully*) are always a good read (unless we go down the gaming path--and even then they aren't dull...)

And Chris just so you don't think we just talking about you while you are sitting right between us, invest in some good eye wash. I can look at filth all day and it doesn't affect me at all as long as I use me trusty eye wash. Now with bleach substitute!

Only if you let them. First I would ask you if these threads were originally conceived to be good natured or thought provoking. Obviously, both would be preferable, but I'm at a bit of a stalemate with people (one of which appears to be you) on whether I should be tactful in what I have to say, or whether they should just lighten up. In the absence of a resolution on that part, I'd like to think that I'm at least being thoughtful, as opposed to just coming on here and saying disruptive things like "I hate niggers!" or "Women belong barefoot in the kitchen!". I personally see a difference between the two, I'm very sorry to anyone who does not.

.. no wait, I'm actually not.

Ok, topic dropped. But I enjoyed our discussion, Chris.

So, onto a much, much less serious ponderable... I'm considering growing my hair out again. I cut it really short two years ago, and since then have gotten all the dye out of my hair, so I'm back to my natural color (ashey blonde, gets highlighted in the sun) for the first time in 10 years. I cut my hair originally partially to get the dye to grow out faster, and partially because I felt like long hair was way too traditional and sweet for my personality. That hasn't changed, but for some reason I'm considering long hair again. Maybe all the long hair styles around me are getting to me, or maybe I'm just sick of getting my haircut every 6 weeks, heh.

Now it appears it's just me and the Imponderable Men on at the moment, but I'd love to hear any opinions. I'd be going from something like this: http://www.ukhairdressers.com/style/index2.asp?R1=6518&month1=&pg=1&st

to something like this: http://www.ukhairdressers.com/style/index2.asp?R1=2051&month1=&pg=1&st

over the course of a year or so. Or maybe more like this: http://www.ukhairdressers.com/style/index2.asp?R1=7951&month1=&pg=1&st

since if I'm being realistic, my hair doesn't hold curl at all.

So what do you think? Long hair or short hair?

So, you hate women? But then who would be barefoot in the kitch...? Oh. Oh, my.

This is actually the old fight between freedom of expression versus offensiveness. I don't think a single rule can be applied to all people everywhere. It is something that must be negotiated between the transmitter of the message and the receiver. I get so pissed off at lette- to-the-editor writers who get offended by people who take their opinions to task. You have the right to express your feelings. Somehow people think that means they also get immunity from rebuke. That is nowhere guaranteed, and goes against the free speech principle itself.

Can you harm people by what you say. Of course, and that is not protected speech. However, there we are talking about "attack" speech. Slander, libel, hate speech and harassment are one thing. What we have here doesn't fall into that. It's an exchange of ideas, some offensive ones perhaps, but if we don't "hear the other side", how can we be enlightened about our own position?

Well, you don't gotta respond, but for the record I am currently serving again.

Nothing you said isn't true. I've had social deficiencies since before high school, although arguably different and of a less violent nature. I didn't know shit about shit before I become interested in military culture. I never learned my multiplication tables and couldn't divide fractions by the time I graduated. Then I picked up a book called the Hagakure, and say what you want about me learning everything I know from the military, but it's the military that gave me the drive to know anything at all. If it weren't for the militaries of past and present, I would be a 260 pound fatass sitting in front of his computer watching hentai. I have a friend like that, and it is NOT a pretty sight.

Finally: At the behest of friends (including some members on this board) and family who I am finally in good graces with again, I am seeing a military psychiatrist to resolve my "issues". Although I was formerly afraid that doing so would interfear with my specific occupational specialty, it turns out that not doing so sooner has actually ousted me from a very elite community of soldiers.

So I checked the Age of Love thread this morning...there were 34 posts or so. Then I did a ton of work. Tons of it. Checked back at the thread exploded. Ouch.

I just caught up and here's any responses that I care to make:

1. I don't really get birthday gifts anymore. If I do, it's from my mom and she's the only one I would dare give a list too. Usually I just say something like 'hey mom, I really want this for my birthday, what'dya think?'

2. CK and hair: I LOVE the first 'do. Second is just long and mussy. Doesn't really look like anything to me other than windblown. Third is nice.

3. Scents: I just like clean man smell. On me I prefer citrus-y things. I HATE vanilla scents.

4. I can't really remember anything else (that I want to comment on.

Editted because picture was huge.

Oh...and I thought of something else to say.

Opinions: There is a way to say your biased opinions without being offensive (most of the time). First and foremost is realizing that it is your opinion and that's it. It's not truth. Second is not including stereotypes and generalizations that are sure to offend. It's also nice to have used some logic in developing your opinions that you can re-trace.

But always remember, it's just your opinion

While you are in is the best time to get help. For one: it's waaay cheaper. Two: Civi docs have trouble discerning military action and civilian action. I've seen a few apt to report on violence executed during service due to their lack of ability to comletely discern the expression of their clients. Glad to hear of the progress.

We all need our catalyst in our lives. Yours is the military. Mine has changed from atonement to living as a man whole and true. It is different for everyone.

long. Long. LONG. LONG!!!

Long hair is just soooooo much sexier than short hair IMO. It's not that a woman with short hair can't be sexy. It's just that the long hair can do so much more. You can run your fingers all through it. A woman can simply brush her hand through her hair and tuck it back or something and it's like an instant male attention getter.

I'll just stop there rather than go on and on and make myself look more insane.

Lol. See, there's the problem. Some like long, some like short. It's a pain in the ass to change it from short to long, so it's not like you can really try out both very often. (Can I have Tonks' powers now, pleeeaaasse?)

This is the best picture I have of what it looks like right now:

It's sometimes poofier than that, but that's more or less it. I'm seriously considering bangs/fringe, even though I haven't had bangs since I managed to convince my mom to stop cutting them when I was 4 years old. But I think bangs might help. (My autoimmune diseases hate my hair, it seems. )

This is probably mostly just Hair Envy Syndrome, heh. When I had long hair, I wanted short hair. Now I have short hair, I want long hair. And I've always wanted curly hair. Dear Hair Gods, can I please have hair like this?

Well CaliforniaKaylee:

I think you can go with long hair. But you look good with short. I change my image on occasion. Had a beard for ten years and suddenly shaved it off.

I once found a resale shop with those skinny neckties from the sixties, and wore them to work even though we were not obligated to wear ties at work. I'm strictly bluejeans sports shirts on weekends.

Change is good. You can always cut it again if you change your mind.

Alright, thread jackery in progress.

Sorry folks. I just got real irked by all three things that really bug my ass.

1. People who drag their feet. Pick 'em up!. Walk like you matter. I can understand sandals or flip flops dragging. But damn.

2. People who don't do what they say they'll do. Follow through. If you can't do it just say so. But don't leave people hanging.

3. Paperless toilet paper roll. There is plenty of TP in the cabinet. But is it some special acquired skill to actually put the paper on the roller?

On the bright side of things I heard from a client who aged out a while ago and she is doing freat. Baby, fiance, readying for school to do, of all things, human service. And she says it's because of me and the people in the facility.

Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Hello nvghostrider:

I don't think you can jack an Imponderable Thread.

The toiletpaper roll issue is one that irks me to. People do the same thing with copy machine paper. If you open the last pack of paper get some more.

I aim to have toilet paper:

NV... it's not about a special skill... it's about people's unwavering belief in the magical, yet elusive, Toilet Paper Roll Changing Fairy.
Everyone I know, except for my mother, believes in it.

Pleeeeeeaaaaase?

~CK

You can't take the sky from me...

Hey, I have the hair envy thing too. Ever since I got my hair cut I've wanted it long again and it's finally growing out. I also want curly hair but it just won't curl.

Good morning everyone. God it's morning already. I'm having one of those days where I just want to stay in bed.

But always remember, it's just your opinion.

I don't think I've ever expressed any of my opinions as being absolute fact, and have often tried to calm people down by reminding them that it was just how I saw things, but most of the time to no avail. As far as stereotypes go, while I may use them very often, I don't recall ever basing any ACTUAL opinions or arguments off of them. This is dangerous territory. I say something negative about females one second with a smirk and expecting it to be taken with a grain of salt, and the next second I make a legitimate argument about how women don't belong here or there, many people assume that it's based off of the same sarcastic sentiment as the first comment.

I can see how people could throw this back in my face; setting up an image of myself as a chauvinist through jokes, and then wondering why people get offended when I make a legitimate argument that seems to be based off of that same chauvinism. Personally, though, I expect people to have a more developed ability to decipher jokes from reality. I refuse to cater to people's misinterpretations of who I am. If I take an optimistic look at it, it's actually resulted in filtering out people I probably wouldn't have gotten along with anyways, and put me in the good graces of people that appreciate my type of personality more, such as Tristan, JQ, and more recently CK. I'd include others, but I'm not sure they'd actually even want to be mentioned.

HK - You should see how charished toilet paper becomes after several weeks or months without any. Latrines are always best stocked and soldiers always most diligent about replacing rolls right after returning to garrison.

CK: I face the same dilemma: long or short? I grow it long and hear it looks great. I cut it short and hear that I should always have it short. Men want it long, women appreciate the short. I just do whatever I feel like. I like changing it up.

And you could have Kate Winslet's hair. That's just the product of a stylist. There is no way in hell her hair looks like that everyday and it was probably HOURS and HOURS of work to get it like that...and to stay like that. I think us ordinary folk tend to live in a fantasy that celebrity hair looks like it does in the movies or at event photo shoots. Nope, it's just like your's and mine, but they have staff to do it when necessary.

I was laughing yesterday because I had some serious Texas big bar hair going on. Huge. With no work from me. I went to bed with damp hair, woke up and went to work. Comparing it to my straightened, effort-ful (I'm making up words) hair is pretty funny. I know that if I wanted to blow my hair dry, straighten it, then curl it, I could have Kate's -do...I just don't want to put in the time and effort so it's big bar hair for me (occasionally).

CMH: I think you've done a better job lately of expressing yourself. However, relying on the fact that a comment typed with a smirk is going to come across as that is over-estimation of your writing skills. If you were the type to constantly be smirking, it might be different. But you present yourself as VERY serious with little sense of humor. That means that even something you are saying in jest is going to be taken seriously. And then all hell breaks loose. I really have to try to not let you push buttons. When you post something inflammatory, I tend to ignore it, while trying not to completely ignore you. But sometimes that line is hard to find, and the better part of valor is actually ignoring you, so I do that too.

Maybe next time you're confused about me possibly being sarcastic, you could bother asking for elboration? When CK asked me to do it, we found ourselves a very nice understanding. Of course if you don't think it's worth your time and would rather just ignore me, I'm happy to be ignored. Maybe you got enough aquaintences in your life and don't care to take the time to make another, or maybe I'm just too low brow for you some/most/all of the time. Fact is, I'm 22, and I had a 300 pound friend of mine rubbing his half naked body against me last week just to gross me out. That same guy is a year away from getting his degree to become a history teacher. Point: We're too young to be totally devoid of immaturity. I'd say I'm sorry, but it'd be a lie.

Are you using Internet Exploder or Firefox? I'm not having any trouble with Firefox. Then again I probably have some super anal corporate firewall kicking the crap out of any viruses.

Exploder. And our firewalls and quarantines are being re-vamped as we speak.

We're only slightly anal. Well, one guy is super anal, but he's the standout.

The is no official evidence of the big bar hair. I don't think the -do would fit on a screen. It's big. And fluffy. And very, very impressive.

As one who has perpetual smirkishness, let me state for the record, it ain't different: it tends to be interpreted at least as snarkish and at worst trollish. Trouble is, in any online forum we're not doing essays, we're exchanging words at a fast pace which doesn't allow for much in the way of revealing motivation. Truth is, words can hurt you and I've written some bad ones. I know my heart is "in the right place" but I tromp on someone else's feelings just the same just because I can and believe that everyone will figure out that I'm not a pompous ass. I have been such and I'm not proud of it.
Can you tell when I'm serious and when I'm not? Part of my "charm" is a refusal to be categorized and so I'm going to try to confuse the issue sometimes. That way I can hide behind my "I was only kidding" shield whenever I want, whether it's true or not. People get tired pretty quick of trying to figure out the difference. So I categorize people into two groups, those that "get" me and those that don't. For those that don't, if I value them, I will make an extra effort not to offend. It gets back to my point yesterday. When exercising our free speech, you can't make broad rules and expect them to fit everyone. Each and every communication must be negotiated between sender and recipient.

You know that horrible obnoxious noise FAX/modems make when they trying to connect? The term for that is negotiation. The two ends of the connection are looking for a common ground so that they can in fact communicate. It's the same with us. We can hang up and redial, or we can hang up and move on.

Good morning folks. Hopefully the firewalls are a workin' and I'm not dicking up the work 'puter.

TP: Whats worse is being out of tp, wet naps been gone for weeks, and everyones down to the idle reading material and report paper.

SO my Mindy is gonna stay at our house for a week or so 'til she can get set up in a place. I might be out of a room and slightly irratible but at least I'll have my friend. I might not make a CSTS screening which is a bit of a bummer.
