Oh, I finally have a few moments after a crazy week. Let's see if I can play a little catch up.

CK: I really hope you can find a doctor that can help you. You sound like you know a lot of what is going on with you, and I'm sure that turns a lot of doctors off. These days, with the advent of the internet and information just a click away, patients come armed with a lot more knowledge...and sometimes come armed with a diagnosis. Doctors aren't known for being the most humble of sorts as a group, and I'm sure it isn't easy on their ego to hear a quite accurate diagnosis from a patient.

*Warning, the following story only relates in a VERY small way. I was talking to my vet about the same thing. My horse had a suspected abscess, which is very easy to diagnose, so when I called her, I told her I thought he had an abscess in his right front medial heel. We had used hoof testers and knew that's where the locus of the pain was. Turns out we were right, she pulled the shoe, drained the abscess, but did little diagnosis work. When I talked to her later in the day, she said that we hardly need her anymore...that we do most of it ourselves. There was a tiny bit of annoyance in her voice...but just a tiny bit. I'm sure it's worse with doctors.

Anyway...I do hope you can find a doctor that can help you. And as an aside, even if you DO find a doctor...is there treatment for your suspected ailments? From what you state, permanent relief from symptoms doesn't sound too promising.

Wedding rings: As a single woman, I appreciate men who wear their rings. I couldn't care less about the women.

I do see the ring as a declaration to the world, and think I would do my best to wear mine except in circumstances where it could cause injury, but I know others feel differently.

So, you ask what I've been up to the last week? (even if you don't ask, humor me ). It's year-end time here at work. That means big themed party and decorating contest. This year's theme was Vegas. We take decorating contest very seriously here at my work. Our department split into sections and each picked a casino or Vegas area to decorate as. We had the Mirage, The Flamingo, Treasure Island, a High Roller Lounge, A massage parlor and a Wedding chapel. I was part of TI. This would be me pretending to be a pirate:

That "Dead men tell no tales"poster behind me? Nine sheets of legal paper, printed and matched up to make the poster. That took some time.

And our treasure chest:

(We all have stinky pirate teeth in that tasted like feet. Or what I imagine feet would taste like. We were very happy to get those out of our mouth.)

Anyway...my little group won the decoratey contest. Woohooo. I've got to say that I'm glad it's over and my desk is back to normal.

But nope. What I said was :

I actually think it is more than jewelry. It is a strong symbol.

You know how I feel.
But if the ring does not represent how you feel, ok.

Of course not. A ring ISN'T love. If you lose it, you lose it. I wear my grandmother's wedding and engagement rings (on my right hand) but they weren't her first. She lost her first set on the bus when she took them off to put lotion on her hands. I don't think it made her love my grandfather any less. I think it was his intolerant need for perfection that made that happen. (they never divorced, but man was he a pistol until about 1978 when he had a stroke. That stroke was a godsend and mellowed him out a ton).

But for me, wearing a ring would mean that I am committed to someone and want others to know it. Not wearing it would mean that the committment is over.

For someone like Jimi, who has an open marriage, I suppose a ring would be a hinderance...because a lot of people do see that ring and stop thinking of the person as available.

Wow I figured this ring thing would be a one off question, but apparently it's tapped into our collective psyche..cool!

I was on the it's no big deal as long as I am wearing my wedding band why do I have to wear the big honkin diamond everywhere and MisterG was upset, but it seems he had cause to feel slighted so I'll apologize and make sure to wear it everywhere from now on...

this is the ring in case you're wondering

Looking at it from a logical point of view, which I seem to lack in some areas, it would make sense to always wear it when going out. One reason would be to let others know you were taken (messed up an opportunity for me at last year's D*C, though I had "permission" to do stuff anyhow) and not to try to approach in that manner (unless you were extremely bold/confidant/rude). Another would be to show off the (carat) size of the diamond. I do, however, understand taking it off when there is the possibility that it or you could be harmed by wearing it. *shrug*

THAT is nice. I'd wear that. I like the combo of metal colors.

Actually I wouldn't wear it very often. I tend to be rough with rings and I like solid, strong, thick, and smooth. Nothing for anything to catch on.

*Hugs*, Rugbug (I don't think I give you enough hugs ). You're right about this. I try not to go to a doctor and say "I think I have this, can you confirm it?" If they give their opinion and don't mention the thing I've been suspecting, I may ask "well, what about X?" After living with this thing for three and a half years and seeing more than a dozen doctors, I don't want to re-tread the same topics with every new doc, and I've found patterns in my illness that I keep hoping will mean something to the right doctor. The last set of docs I had were pretty open to suggestion and ran numerous tests because of things I'd read on (reputable) websites, but when it comes right down to it, I need someone who knows more than I know, more than I could read online.

Quote:

And as an aside, even if you DO find a doctor...is there treatment for your suspected ailments? From what you state, permanent relief from symptoms doesn't sound too promising.
Well, yes and no. What I have seems to be chronic, and if it's autoimmune like I (and several previous doctors) suspect it is, then it will be a life-long ailment. But there's research that suggests that all autoimmune diseases do better in the long run if they are treated aggressively as early as possible. With every flare of the disease, you get a bit worse and never quite rebound, so medications that prevent, suppress, or shorten flares keeps the patient at a higher level of health for a lot longer. So, all else being equal, the sooner I can get a diagnosis and start treatment, the better I'll feel when I'm 50 years old, etc. But I'll probably stay on the pain meds I've been on, even after I get a diagnosis, unless there's some medication out there that works particuarly well for this type of pain.

Wedding rings: If you have them I think they should be worn whenever possible, but I think it's more about the social norm than about any real meaning in the rings themselves. My mom didn't have a wedding or engagement ring until I was 6 years old, and Dad didn't have one until I was 11 -- it was just an extravagance that they couldn't afford for a long time. I wear both my engagement and wedding ring almost everywhere. I take them off daily for showering and dishes and such, but unless I'm going to the beach I don't leave the house without them. Hubby sometimes forgets his in the shower, but I don't worry about him getting hit on when he isn't wearing his ring , since he has a "married guy" vibe -- without realizing it, he tends to give women a once over with a look that says "you don't measure up", and then wonders why his friends get hit on but he doesn't, lol.

Books: haven't read Dresden, but the peacock story reminded me a bit of The Stress of Her Regard by Tim Powers. Anyone here a Tim Powers fan? I just finished reading The Anubis Gates, and I'm re-reading On Stranger Tides while I'm deciding on which Tim Powers novel to order from Amazon next. Probably my favorite author ever. His plots are a bit like The Da Vinci Code, only based on actual, verifiably correct historical facts. (My apologies to any Dan Brown fans, but you're not likely to find a bigger Dan Brown hater than me.)

Lunch: MsG, anything and everything you make sounds damn tastey. .

Then he changed jobs and convinced himself that it was the building that he worked in. He had another co-worker that experienced the same thing. (This was a while before I worked with him, so I know nothing of the building.) It took weeks, but his health returned.

I've lived in two states and four separate apartments/condos since this thing started, worked in two different offices during the first six months, and worked from home for the past 3 years. So I'm pretty sure my location doesn't have a lot to do with it. Weather seems to affect it, both directly and indirectly (I feel better if I spend time out in the sun, worse if I catch a cold) and traveling can hurt both short term and long term (if I catch something from whatever dumbass flew while hacking up a lung), but that's about it as far as location goes.

I live pretty close to a med school, so by default about half of the specialists I've seen also teach at the school, but I haven't tried a teaching hospital specifically. My insurance being what it is, I generally have to work through a primary care doc, and I'm done trying to pick one of those based on supposed credentials.

Thanks for the hugs, though. eHugs (as HK calls them ) seem to be the best medicine right now: it helps knowing people care, and I can't catch a cold from an eHug!

Oh, if we're posting rings, here's the best one I managed to snap of mine, almost five years ago when I was planning the wedding. I had a wedding band cast that fits the bottom edge of the ring like a glove.

Thanks Msg. The reasons are a few.
It's a beautiful ring, but it is large, and overpowers my hand a bit.
I worked with a woman many years ago who only wore a wedding band. I asked her about it once, and she said offhand that the wedding band meant more to her than the engagement ring, and having a big rock on her hand "wasn't her." That's when I wore my engagement ring every day.
Her words have stuck with me for years.

Lastly, I got used to not wearing any rings when Husband & I were separated. When he gave me the replacement wedding band, I decided not to put the engagement ring back on.

My simple gold band means more than any pretty he could give me.
Mainly, cause I value him.

CK: You say that you feel better when you've been out in the sun...do you think that could be due to increased vitamin D? If so, have you considered taking supplements to see if it helps a little bit?

Msg and Mavs: Good lord...are those rings as huge as they look in the pics? If so, I can see why you wouldn't want to wear them all the time.

Yeah, that's the theory I'm working with. After noticing that I felt better when I'd been out in the sun, I did some research and found that there's been a few studies recently linking vitamin D deficiency with increased autoimmune activity, so it makes sense. I'm taking a multivitamin with D in it and I've upped my milk intake (which was way difficult for me ), but nothing seems to have quite as strong an affect as 30 minutes in the sun twice a week. Shrug.

Well I hope the doctor thing works out. I've found lately that the doctors I go to seem to expect you to already have some idea of what's wrong....asking them to figure it out is an ordeal that takes several visits as they give medication and then ask if it worked.
