I saw this article linked on the IMDB website today:

http://cinemaslave.wordpress.com/2007/07/10/ruining-movies-for-other-p
eople-its-fun-for-the-whole-family
/

Pretty interesting stuff and it got me thinking. What are some movies that got ruined for you before you had a chance to see them? Prodigious use of the "spoiler" command is recommended.

As for me?

A number of people ruined The Matrix for me. What?! Reality is not reality? We are all just being fed virtual reality while we unconsciously power the microwaves of a race of sentient robots?!

LWAVES

I just read some of the article and the replies. They are giving a lot of stuff away.

I feel sorry for those who grow up in a world where Vader has always been Luke's father (oh no!! a spoiler). I'm lucky enough to be old enough to remember the cinema reaction. It was just total shock. And you soooo wanted to tell everyone.

I'm usually pretty good with movies, and avoid as much as I can near the films release, especially if it's one I'm really interested in watching. Also I try and watch it on opening weekend so there's not much chance of someone spoiling it for me as I'll be one of the first of my friends to watch it.

I have had several TV shows spoiled though. Read at your peril.

Six Feet Under

Taped the whole last season with the intention of watching it later. Stopped recording during the adverts after the finale, just as the announcer put the next programme up and stated that Nate was dead but here's some comedy to cheer you up.
I figured that one of the main characters would die, but I had my money on Claire. Finding out in advance really pissed me off, and I still haven't watched the last season.

CSI:Miami

This is just this week. I'm slowly catching up with this show but I picked up my TV mag and on the cover is a piccy of Horatio promoting the new season and it states that he is after the killer of his wife. Where I'm up to (season 3) he isn't even married and now she's already dead!!!

Buffy

Okay I had an idea she was gonna die at the end of season 5, but I wasn't certain. Then they showed an advert with the shot of the gravestone. Damn.

It takes all kinds to make the world go ‘round. Unfortunately, some are pedaling in the wrong direction...

I accidentally read spoilers regarding the end of "The Departed." DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE.

I knew that most of the main characters are killed, so the shock wasn't there. However, I did find it rather pointless that everyone but Digman died...

Of course, someone told me that the ship sinks at the end of "Titanic." Ruined the whole thing.

REGINAROADIE

In terms of spoilers, specifically for BUFFY, I kinda knew ahewad what was happening, but it still didn't take away from the moment itself.

I never watched BUFFY during it's initial run (I got farmervision, for the longest time and then lived in a dorm for about a year and then finally got basic cable when we moved to the house on Shannon Road), but I had heard things here and there about the series (Buffy dies and is brought back to life, Willow turns evil) and I saw "Hush" on SPACE once, but didn't really get it since I didn't know any of the mythology. I only really got to watching BUFFY and ANGEL when they were all out on DVD in and around when SERENITY came out so that I could see Joss' calling card series. But even then as I was watching it, I'd listen to the commentary tracks and during the tracks, the speakers would just off handedly say "so when Jenny Calendar dies..." or "So when Tara dies", and I'm like "JENNY DIES? TARA DIES!!! WTF!!!!!" So that ticks me off when the speaker assumes you've seen the entire series already and knows the ins and outs.

As per SIX FEET UNDER, you really should see the last season despite knowing what happens. An already perfect series pretty much hit it's peak with season 5, so you'd be robbing yourself of seeing some pretty emotionally powerful stuff. IMHO, Alan Ball is a way better writer than Joss, and the stuff he comes up with can put Joss to shame.

SERENITY.

I bought the SERENITY magazine at Borders a while before the movie came out and someone (I think Gina Torres) said that Wash was killed. Had heard rumors of two deaths on various sites, even though I was actually trying to stay spoiler-free, and accidentally saw that it would be Wash and Book. I chose to assume they were only rumors, but it wasn't until I got the magazine that I realized it was true.

No, didn't ruin SERENITY for me, but it did ruin the shock and the impact of the deaths. I freaked more for Zoe and Simon's injuries and feared those might be deaths that hadn't been leaked. Never thought for a minute Joss would kill Mal.

So I say we change the rule. I say my power should be our power...

Make your choice. Are you ready to be strong?"--Buffy Summers, May 20, 2003

NEEDY

The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

AGH my eyes
I think I just read a spoiler in the comments section for a film I haven't yet seen
I scrolled down before seeing the whole message, but I think I might have jsut been spoiled.
I will be seeing said movie on Sunday, so we'll see

As for spoilers... well having a sister wih a big mouth has always been a thorn in my side.

I wanted to watch Open Your Eyes (the original Vanilla Sky) but my family were halfway through watching it at the time, so I figured I'd watch it after them
Towards the end of the movie, I came in the room but avoided looking at the screen, and kept my earphones in and music playing until I noticed the credits were rolling. Finally it was safe.
Then just as I took my earphones out, my sister blurted out the twist for my mum who had just walked in before me, confused about what had happened.

What a big mouth.

Now though she does it on purpose. Fortunately she no longer lives in the house so I'm fairly safe, but I never know when she's gonna blurt something out.

She ruined the Angel episode "Hero" for my brother before he'd seen it.
She tried to ruin the Buffy season 5 finale for me (I swear on purpose), but fortunately the episode had already aired. (Even though I had actually had it spoiled by a news item I read before)

Movies that I had spoiled:
Unbreakable - I read about the twist in a magazine, not knowing it was a twist, so I was just waiting for it to be revealed the whole time, and was pretty much underwhelmed by the film. It was only after I watched the movie again that I started to appreciate it for what it was (It is incidentally one of my faves now)

The Usual Suspects - Though I didn't know the twist, I knew there WAS a twist, so obviously I was looking for one. And that made it so much easier to spot. At times the knowledge that there is a twist is spoilerish enough.

Still, didn't ruin Sixth Sense for me. Everyone knew it had a twist. I still didn't see that coming!
