Just came from a sneak peek of "3:10 to Yuma" starring Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, and our own dear Wash (Quite a summer for AT, he's popping up everywhere!). Without spoiling anything, Alan's part was pretty big, and he did an absolutely fantastic job in a departure from his more wacky characters. He was wry, pragmatic, and even somewhat of a badass at times. He did have one Washesque moment but I'll let you find that for yourselves. There was a Q&A with Ben Foster (aka "Angel" from X3) and Peter Fonda afterwards, and Fonda spoke kindly of Alan's work in a scene they did together. Anyway, that's all the news I got. Oh, yeah, the movie was good also. ;-)

Oh, goody! Thank you so much for reporting on your sneak peek, Ninah148.
Nice to hear that AT has a decent-sized part and gets to be a badass at least part of the time. And that PF appreciated him.
Hope this will be on a nearby screen soon...

I remember the original with Glenn Ford and Van Heflin. That was a good movie. I may just pick that one. I thought Glenn Ford made an excellent criminal. I don't think I ever saw him play a bad guy before.

Probably should get them both and see how they compare. See if they made any changes in the second one.

I never saw the original, but based on the Q&A they said this was quite different in parts (and better, of course!) They said a few characters were added or fleshed out from the original movie, and that overall the characterizations were more complex.

LOL, aren't the remakes always proclaimed to be better by their makers. This is a challenge we must meet! Trav is going to do a side-by-side, same as a wine challenge, and will report. We can do no less -- where do we get the old film?

Will have to buy it, I am sure. There was a time we had some independent video rental stores near by but they have all closed down. They were the only places you could find older films along with independents and foreign films. Alas, those days are gone. Now it is only mainstream.

So I guess it is off to Amazon or I may find it at Best Buys. They have a surprising collection. Who knows, the remake may get them to bring out the original.

Should have kept my mouth shut and now I wil have to spend some cashy money.

Saw an ad for this today, and I said, " Isn't that a remake of an oldie, but one I've never seen?"
And it's got our Wash in it. gotta go see it now...

Just looked into Amazon and a special addition of the orignal version 3:10 to Yuma is due in late August.

Think I will stick with the old standard version.

You can always count on the promise of money to dust off an old classic.

EDIT:
Well I ordered the original along with a few other movies I've been meaning to purchase. So this was incentive to finally order some films I have wanted.

To many movies, not enough time.
I have a wish list of movies I want to add to my collection that grows faster than I can purchase them. Someone will bring up a movie I forgot and I will add iy to my list. Of course I go to IMDB and find them by the gross.

I will probably rent the remake of "3:10" and if I like than I might buy it. Sometimes the directors create a whole different story by changing the characters. So I will not blow it off as just a copy until I see it. But when will I have time to see it is the bigger hurdle.

Time -- yagh. Always a problem. I have a bad habit of actually watching and listening, so can't do the dishes or any of that while the DVD player is spinning away. Also, I've developed a nasty Pause habit.
Shoulda seen me trying to fit my just-acquired copy of Das Boot, director's cut, into a day. The thing is nearly four hours long. Three and a half, maybe. And gripping. But the time! Ai yi. Oh, and had to do it again with commentary. Gave up some sleep for that.

Hello FloralBunny;

Now you mention Das Boot and I will have to add that to my list. I remember that one. After watching that one I could never see myself getting into submarine.

I try to stay away from director's cut because they are usually longer. Those guys created all those scenes and they want us to see them.

Yes, I know what you mean about DCs. Bloated, self-indulgent, all that. Some really deserve the descriptions.

Fear not the DC of "Boot." It was shot simultaneously as a theatrical release and a six-hour "mini." For this DVD release they restored about an hour of material which serves to explain some of what was in the original film. The story of how they recovered negatives, sound tracks and so on is most interesting. And some details about the dubbing. It's altogether quite worth it, I think.

Thank you FloralBunny. Director's cut it shall be.
Of course it is part of the ever groing list I have already mentioned.

I'm lucky my VCR and tapes still function.
Replacing them would be near impossible.

I have discovered movies I have on VHS are not yet available on DVDs.

I am looking forward to Death at a Funeral which I saw at a test screening earlier and Alan was wonderful. I declared him brilliant in DaaF. With 3:10 to Yuma and the Oscar Buzz I expect more great things for Alan.

I ordered the original "3:10 to Yuma" on Friday and they had it here on Monday. To bad I was at work and was not there to sign for it. Went to the post office after work today and it is sitting in my machine waiting to go as I type this. I have not seen it in years so I hope I am not disappointed. But Glen Ford and Van Heflin are both excellent actors so I feel safe.

Just finished watching it. Not disappointed. Glen Ford played one nasty guy. Now will have to get the new one. I think it will be good too. If they stink you usually here more about them. It is the good ones that everyone stays silent about. And I have not heard much about this one. I don't even remember it coming to the theater. I must have been asleep at the wheel when it hit town. My mistake.

Now to watch "Momento", "For Whom the Bell Tolls", and "Friendly Persuasion" that I ordered with "3:10". I'm a Gary Cooper Fan.

I put "For Whom the Bell Tolls" on next. I forgot how long this movie is. They even kept the Intermission sign in the movie like you would have at the theater when a movie goes beyond two hours. I can not remember even having an Intermission during any movie I went to unless it was an outdoor double feature. No more out theaters around here. All gone now.

It has been so long since I had seen this one that I did not know it was in color. Last time I watched "For Whom the Bell Tolls" my family still had a black and white TV.

I am aging myself again.

If we happen to discuss other topics, so be it.

I do have to see the remake of "3:10" though.

I will have to stop at Best Buys and just put my money down and get it.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I liked the original 3:10 to Yuma, but was kind of surprised they decided to do a remake, but as Traveler said the promise of money will have Hollywood blowing dust off anything to cash in.

Saw an ad last night while watching The Dirty Dozen (great flick for any who have been hiding under a rock and not seen it) last night and Crowe and Bale look good in it. The sets and background look great, but try as I might, I did not see Alan in the ad anywhere.

Is his part a bit part or something?

Hello FloralBunny; Hello Browncoat:

I believe the move has come and gone from theaters.

It is now on sale as DVD.

Does anybody remember this actually being at a theater? I do not recall seeing any adds for it.

According to Internation Movie Database Alan does have a title. He is called Doc Potter.

Anyway they don't give you a name unless you do some work, besides being a pedestrian. I suspect Alan's part is small but he will must have some dialogue. Did not see him in the Trailer. The Remake has new scenes, but the storyline seems the same. I am looking forward to it.

So will probably go to Best Buy with some cashy money on Saturday.

Oh and Bump.

Alan is hard to spot. He does not appear until near the end of the clip I saw and is very unWash-like - in fact, he's one of the top bad guy gunhands:

As much as I hate to correct, that is NOT Alan. I know it looks like him. REALLY LOOKS like him. Looks like him enough to fool Joss Whedon himself. Check out this link from our friends at Whedonesque.com: http://whedonesque.com/comments/13817

Alan IS in the trailer, but you can barely see him. He is not a gunslinger, he is a veterinarian in the film. But it is still not a tiny role. He is in the film poster credits for Wash's sake!

I was fooled into thinking this was him in the awesome photo, playing the awesome heavy. But alas, it was some bloke named Ben Foster (whoever THAT is...).

Alan would have been fantastic in that role.

Add me to the momentarily fooled. I've just come from IMDb, checking up on a release date for 3:10 to Yuma (September 7) and looking at the paltry stock of stills they have bothered to put up.

There was a tiny thumbnail which looked so much like a shaven-headed Alan that I blew it up immediately (ka-BOOM!) and lo and behold: it was the mysterious Ben Foster. Haven't found a pic of Alan yet. He is billed 5th, FWIW.

Not expecting DVD yet...
