From RopeOfSilicon.com, an exclusive Comic Con interview with The Master:
http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/news.php?id=6846

It's a great interview, so read the whole damn thing!

Excerpt posted at NewsOfTheVerse.net:
So give me hope for a Serenity II

JW: Hope for it probably rests with this DVD. (re: The Big Damn Collector's Edition)
. . .
So then you're saying we've got a chance?

JW: Well it's probably not being discussed in boardrooms right now, but the fact of the matter is if it makes enough money sooner or later they say "hey, this is money!" Also there are paradigms that are much cheaper, it doesn't have to be enormous. But on the other hand I'm happy to say all of my actors are working very hard. It's not the same situation where we all threw in for pennies because we had to finish telling that story. Now that situation might be harder to bring about.

I have faith that we will get our big damn trilogy - it might take another 5 years... it might take 10... but we'll get it! Never say never - that's my motto... or would be if I had a motto...

This is much more positive than he's ever been. I mean the last thing was, "I'll do it if somebody comes calling."

And it's nice to see confirmation that BDM went into the black from theatrical release. That has been debated in these threads many a time. They are making a fortune from these DVDs.

I say let 'em and get us a BDSequel. Mine's on order from Amazon through the website to make money for the host.

There is always a cautious hope existing somewhere in sometime. I will keep believing because I choose to. Don't get me wrong, I love hearing it from the master's lips, but, if I lived and breathed a sequel on Joss' words, I would never get anything done.

I am so very, very happy to hear that Serenity made money! I felt particularly badly for Mary Parent (at Universal) when we all thought that Serenity had lost money in theatrical, because I thought, "Here's this Firefly fan, she wanted it so badly she made the movie happen, and now her bosses are probably mad at her and maybe she'll get fired..." Whew!

I never bought a DVD before Firefly, and I've ended up buying three of those (one as a gift for my brother, one for me, and one to use as a loaner copy -- it's always out there somewhere), one Serenity, and now I've pre-ordered the Special Edition. I can't wait to hear the new commentary :)

This is the most hopeful thing I've heard Joss say!

I also know more than ever that the key to any possibility of a BDSequel and not having to wait forever for it resides in how many of these BDCE we can buy.

So spread the word, Browncoats, spread it far and wide particularly to people who you know are BC's who are not online, because sales of this DVD need to be awesome!!

And write Universal and thank them for this!
Check this thread to follow a plan that's already in place to do some of this.

It's a long shot, but if Joss says it's feasible, it's doable!!

Friendly reality check here........How many of those who bought the Serenity DVD already are going to buy this new DVD? 10%...25%...50%...75%...?

Is it going to be "marketed" somehow other than FF websites? Who, other than 'coats are even going to know it's out there?

Just seeing that interview made my heart stop for a second. From Little seeds as they say. How many other movies have gone on to being produced after hearing even more ephemeral comments than that.

Got My BD-CE on order and am spreading the word.(side note, I already own the R2 Version with most of the extra material on anyway, but who gives a ****)

I dunno, Jongstraw. I dunno.
I know I am and I'm hoping that Browncoats everywhere will.

It's being marketed some by Universal. They've annnounced it's release and have links on some sites already. I hope they'll have more. AICN, IGN, BBC, some other places might mention it and pick it up in advertising.

Do you have any ideas how we can do this? Spread it beyond the fandom? I've written all my family members and friends and told them about it.
I'm going to send out a bulletin on my myspace and hopefully that will get to some people who are possible fans and not on these sites.

I am hoping we can create a big enough Digg Team ( to digg any articles about the BDCE that come up) that we can influence the seeing of this on that site.
Any other suggestions about how we can get this wider than the fandom are much appreciated.

Here's an idea, you could switch it up to be an ad advertising the BDCE in your local paper....

One of the things that I am doing to promote the collectors edition is going around to my local video stores that sell movies and asking them if they are going to have any copies for sale on August 21st.

That way, they know there is demand and they will order copies.

Another thing I am doing is making sure that everyone I have loaned the DVD's to in the last four years knows that the CE will be available.

Amazon.com has put the Serenity Collector's Edition DVD cover on http://www.boxofficemojo.com/ I snagged a pic. http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=17425

I'm hoping for a big box at the Wal-Marts. Even if it isn't an all Serenity Box. IT'S A TUESDAY! How about a Serenity/Slither combo pack! What other movies does Universal have being released that week?

If not, Best Buy is going to have a lot of them. They know.

Target also knows. Somebody at Target loves Firefly! $19.99 all the time!!

No sign on Netflix last time I looked. Wonder if Blockbuster will have any for sale and/or rent.

I believe every Browncoat should order 1 copy direct from Universal as a Thank you and More Please!

http://homevideo.universalstudios.com/details.php?childId=36897

I'll be buying several that Tuesday and that week at stores. Christmas presents. And I'll also be making sure the shelves are neat and stuff. Sometimes the front side of the stores sell out and the DVDs are just in the video dept. Or the other way around. Wish I could take the day off work like when Old Serenity was released. The thing about shelf space is that people will see it who may not even know anything about it. People may recognize the ship! Or not! Look sci-fi movie...hadn't seen that one before.

REMEMBER ALL PRE-ORDERS FROM ANYWHERE COUNT AS FIRST WEEK SALES!

Yeah! Serenity is in the black!

I for one will be buying MANY copies. For those asking if browncoats will buy another copy, what, are you serious? How many of us saw Serenity at the theater more than once? I saw it over 20 times in the theaters, and I am by no means a rarity (a tad extreme, okay). Local stores will have a hard time keeping it in stock around me!

I've updated the bigdamnsequel.com website with a link to the article, by the way, in case anyone needs an easy way to spread word to other browncoats.

Laremy,

Thanks for the great article!

Your article has a post on http://whedonesque.com/comments/13907#184902
Do you have an id over there...because if not you can email them and maybe they will let you in as a special case.

and this very thread has been picked as news here on fff.net Congratulations XARDOZ! which means it will stay on the front page for a while and will be read by more people. For example: Friday, August 03, 2007 03:29 TIMES READ: 929

So, Laremy,

Did you know that there is a problem that some people know about Serenity but they don't know about Firefly? Really, just found two people recently. There is also a problem that people know about Firefly and don't know about Serenity. That is why the Serenity Collector's Edition DVD cover pic is so shiny on the front page of your article. People might just recognize the ship. Also seeing the cover, people think spaceship...must be a sci-fi movie...might want to check it out. Instead of just thinking it is a movie about a woman named Serenity and her boyfriend and what is that burning thing in her hand?

So I printed up your article for two comic book stores and went to bed.

Woke up. Libraries. All those libraries that put Serenity in circulation. They need a copy of the article too. You know what the article needs is a picture of the Firefly DVD cover on the third page. Sure I could print one and tape it on. But maybe you could ad it to the article for those who don't know. (Hint Hint Hint) Really there are people. That is part of the problem.

And also there are people who don't know who Joss Whedon is. Not here. But elsewhere. And there are people who don't know who the actors are. REALLY.

For example, Universal put in their press release

http://sev.prnewswire.com/entertainment/20070731/LATU15431072007-1.htm
l

From Universal Home Entertainment: Serenity Collector's Edition on DVD August 21, 2007

Of course, they should have said Jewel Staite ("Missing", "Stargate: Atlantis) because she was in one episode already.

Hey, I'm gonna print up the press release for the libraries too. They could just buy the DVD too! And remember some libraries have a FREE purchase suggestion request form you can fill out!

Going back to bed soon.

I think what he means by saying it could come back in a different paradigm, maybe not as big is... TV. Like a TV movie or mini-series. That would be less expensive than a full-blown movie and could be the toe in the water, testing whether there's enough interest for another shot at a series.

I agree that hope rests on sales, not only of BDCE, but also the series. What if we create a forum or thread and count how many people we've introduced to the series? Just keep a running tab. It doesn't have to be scientific or even real, but everyone knows someone who hasn't heard of or watched Firefly. This might inspire a new push (not that the momentum of everyone here isn't enough).

I agree with you about the tv movie, miniseries thing, since Joss said that, I'm thinkin' he's thinkin' that. He also said it would be harder to get the actors though, so we'll see.

I think starting a thread on the boards we're active on, counting how many of us are going to buy the CE, how many folks we've intro'd FF to, and how many of us are still buying the series to share is a good idea.

When the time comes to start keeping track, go for it OMS. I'll help you keep it bumped as will everyone here I'd wager.

One more thing though. The active participation on this board has dwindled. It has on all the other boards too. Think what activity this thread would have had last summer when we were all planning and urging each other to guerrilla market. Look at how many responses and looks this thread has had. It'll do better now that it's in the news panel. ( Thank you mods!)
We need to spread this news far and wide amongst flans, fellow scifi fans and in every way you can think of. There are loads of folks who no longer check the boards nor even lurk! We need to reach them too! If more of the 'Verse relies on the sales of the CE, then I hope we can rally lots of folks, cuz "eleventy kabillion" is a lot of DVD's!

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

It may take 5 years, it may take 10.....

I'm not giving up hope, so don't take my meaning the wrong way, but the longer it takes, the more I feel we lose. Summer can't play a 17 yr old girl forever. I just wonder if we'll even recognize our BDHs the next time we get to see them on screen. Not to mention the rate at which Joss likes to snuff out the most beloved characters.... ) Ok, that was uncalled for.......But I can't help but think the only BDH we'll recognize in the next movie will be the gorram ship!

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

AURaptor, I don't think you're expressing anything we haven't all thought of. I know I've discussed these same exact things with my friends who like me would sell their property for a sequel, but know it's gotta be soon.
So no worries, no one is going to take your meaning wrong. At a certain point, it's moot for there to be more 'Verse with these same characters and actors. Then we have to think, will we like something else as well? For me personally, it won't be the same, although I can't rule out checking it out, cuz it's Joss.

Spacey said on another board that she thought we'd hear about a sequel in the next 6 months. By Joss, I hope she's right!

Joss is not one to get our hopes up and dash them, so I'm sure he's working hard to bring us back to the 'Verse one way or another.

Hi FollowMal,

You asked me to respond to the charges that I misquoted Joss, which I think are happening at Whedonesque re: Serenity's profitability.

I'd be happy to do so in any format, including here, but as I'm not a member over there I'm not sure how I could properly defend myself on that forum if you catch my drift..

Here is the exact quote from Joss, which I still have an audio recording of:

ME: Serenity, that was the last time we spoke.. and I kind of did some rough math and I figured that if it sold like a million DVDs it would be profitable but I don't have any idea of the inner workings.. is it a success to you or the studio? What's the final...

JOSS: It's a success to the studio or else they wouldn't be putting out a special edition DVD. And I know it's a success to the studio because they've actually admitted it on paper which as you know studios are always loathe to do, you know the "we lost money on Batman" rule... but um, and that was theatrical actually. Theatrical was a disappointment as everybody knows but it did go into the black, ironically, and then it did go to DVD and they took me aside and they said "We can not keep this on the shelf, we can't stop selling..

ME: Yeah...

JOSS: This, we want to do a special edition....

And so on from there. So I didn't misquote him on any level. I have no idea as for the inner workings of studio accounting, as you'll notice from my original Q (which I cleaned up for sake of clarity, and being able to actually keep the interview under novella size). Some say studios get half the cash, theaters the the other half. I've seen the 55% number thrown out on Whedonesque and I'd say it has as much credence as anything else.

The basic thing I would point out however is that studios essentially don't reveal profit margins on anything. They are extremely elusive, which is why I asked the question. When Joss says they put it on paper your guess is as good as mine as to where that happened, was it a private memo? Was it a press release or interview I didn't catch? I don't know, and frankly it's not really my job to know. I take Joss at his word, and if the 38.8m in revenue (minus the theater's take) doesn't equal the reported $39m production budget... well, you got me. That's why I initially stated I figured 1 million DVDs would be the profit maker ($15 x 1m). But really the production budget could be off, even though the $38m in box office must be legit. I challenge anyone to find me real numbers from the studio on damn near anything. So could Joss be confused, or misled? Sure. But did I misquote him? Nope.

I would agree at face value the numbers don't add up, but for my purposes in an interview I just convey what the person said. And in this case the audio backs me up. In general misquoting anyone would be a very poor idea for a writer because you'd tend to not get interviews anymore. And as this is my third interview with Joss in the past two years I clearly have a vested interest in making sure I quote him accurately.

One last thing, who is to say that the only revenue source is the box office? What about other sources of revenue? I don't know all of them but merchandise, or heck even if it helped sell more Firefly DVDs. The rigors of studio accounting are as mysterious as they are byzantine. So I'm trusting Joss.

Best - Laremy

Hi, Laremy. I asked you in a PM to respond to a
post on the OB in which that person stated that perhaps Joss had been misquoted as they just didn't believe that Serenity might have gone into the black.
The OB ( Original Board- Fox Prospero Firefly Board) is different from Whedonesque.
Since my message to you, someone over there (OB) informed that poster that you'd recorded the interview, therefore had not misquoted Joss. So problem solved over there.

As for Whedonesque, I am unaware of anyone over there posting that Joss was misquoted, although there is discussion over there as well that Serenity could not have made a profit.

You may join Whedonesque to discuss something that involves a project, article or website that you've conceived, written or made if there is discussion on the website about it. All you need do is register and fill out the form saying why you'd like to join.
I'm not sure "defend" is the correct word for what you might want to do at Whedonesque, more clarify.
I get no sense over there that they think you're in the wrong as much as I get the sense that some of the more connected to show business folks on there are incredulous that Serenity made a profit.

The thing I'd like to highlight in what you said in this section is the part where you said "I take Joss at his word". I agree wholeheartedly. And I don't for a second believe that you misquoted him.

Absolutely and I have every confidence that you'd be a consummate journalist in your interviews with him, now and in the future.

Me too. Joss is Boss. If he says that buying the CE will improve our chances of a BDSequel, then that's what my mission is til we get what we need sold.

Thank you, Laremy.
I still encourage you to join Whedonesque, if only for the wonderful community and discussion. It's lively and friendly over there and I love being a part of it. I suspect you would too.

I printed the article and UNI press release http://sev.prnewswire.com/entertainment/20070731/LATU15431072007-1.htm
l
and left them at two comic book stores today.

I tried to pre-order (they are checking on it) the Serenity Collector's Edition at Borders today. I showed the article with Joss's pic and the DVD cover and said I wanted to pre-order this movie. Boom, I found a Serenity fan who didn't know. That employee turned to the next employee who came by and told them about it.

Barnes and Noble stores that have DVD departments can pre-order the SCE DVD.

Will try FYE sometime next week.

Definitely hopeful to hear.

But I REFUSE to purchase it from Amazon regardless of who it makes money for. Not until they agree to stop selling those dogfighting and cockfighting videos, which last I heard, they still refused. I will not support cruelty for anybody!

Thanks to everyone for the great links, and especially to Laremy for the interview with JW.

I will, of course, be purchasing at least two of the CEs: one for watching, one for archival purposes.

I'd like to take a little time, here, to forward my fondest desire to see Firefly return to television, as either a miniseries or full-season series. As one of the links revealed, television is the surest path to financial success. With NBC being in Universal Studios' 'family tree' -- along with SciFi Channel -- I see this as a perfect opportunity matched with an ideal delivery system. NBC's "Heroes" also shows on SciFi; "Battlestar Galactica" runs on SciFi -- for only one more season -- and both sell like hotcakes on DVD. When BSG retires this year, what will replace it? Wouldn't Firefly figure to do well in its stead?

...Of course, V-U (Vivendi-Universal) would have to prize the TV rights -- which don't expire until 2010 -- from F*x TV's deathlike grip, but...

Finally, a word about Joss, which may displease some; but, I feel it's a valid observation and I intend it as a means to improve, not to denigrate the man.

I think JW may be working his way out of a career. As fans will doubtlessly already know, he's getting washed out of projects at an alarming rate. While he acknowledges that he's hard to classify by genre -- and that he's hard to sell to studios -- he seems to remain convinced that he's bulletproof as a combination writer, director and creator of stories. The evidence would seem to suggest otherwise.

It is possible that a major reason why we have not already been greenlit for a sequel is the studio's reluctance to work with this unpredictable genius, who readily confesses to wanting "to get it all in", rather than narrowing his focus to the gist of the story. Admit it, if you dare: "Serenity" was a bit of a rockety ride, plot-wise. It wasn't so much that it was a bad ride, or that it took a lot of unnecessary detours; it's just that it could have -- should have -- been streamlined to the central premise. Then, more time could have been taken with individual character progression/interaction, Joss' forte.

...Joss the director should have demanded script revisions from Joss the writer...

That's why Joss has been so good on TV -- where he can weave as convoluted a tale as he desires: He can have as broad a focus as he can imagine and it's all to the betterment of the property. But movie storytelling is a different proposition, altogether. It's a much shorter format; trying to squeeze an entire series-season worth of subplot into a 2-hour timeframe is really neither possible nor desirable, while maintaining a discernible main plot at the same time.

And yet, I get the distinct feeling that Joss has no desire to return to TV. He's hitched his star to movies. Problem is, he's not yet a great (or even profitable/'hire-able') movie storyteller.

Joss -- if you're listening, or have friends who report on commentary on this website -- do yourself a great service and get an arbitrator between Joss The Director and Joss The Writer. I know JTD trusts JTW implicitly; but I think that trust may be somewhat misplaced. JTW is too much like a kid in a candy store; inaptly paired with JTD, who is too much like a doting grandparent, to the detriment of the kid's dentition. There needs to be somebody (Tim Minear?) wedged in between those two rascals.

Joss, we need you. Not just for SereniFly, but for all the wonderful stories you have yet to tell us. Please stop thinking you can work in a vacuum, wearing all the hats. You need someone to keep your creativity grounded and focused.

In closing, while this has been critical, it has been critical in the best possible sense: It is intended to point out not only flaws in behavior/execution, but it also attempts to suggest possible means to improve. It is given out of genuine love and respect, and I hope it is received in the same manner.

For what it's worth, I still watch Serenity and Firefly on a monthly basis, at a minimum. I think they're great, or else I wouldn't keep buying and watching them. But, I don't represent the broad demographic Joss needs to reach, if he's to become profitable and continue telling his wonderful stories for decades to come...

Respectfully,

zoid

P.S.
I eagerly await "Goners", if the studio don't wind up pulling the plug first... Something's wrong, and Joss needs to rectify it. As my agent once said, replying to my insistence that we refuse to compromise my sense of personal integrity: "You can't decline engagements they aren't offering." Meaning: I had gotten too full of myself and forgotten that the Work -- whatever work -- was what was important. Once you're in such high demand that all the offers can't be accepted, then and only then can you afford to get selective ('uppity'). In the meantime: Find a ship, get a crew, and take the job...any job. In short: Work.

Laremy, Bix was kind enough to link this thread over to Whedonesque, so that folks over there could see your response to me.

I hope you'll still join...it's fun, but your answer has been seen.
