Forgot about The Bed Sitting Room!

Years since I saw it it, AFAIR, the post apocalyptic landscape seeming to consist of vast heaps of broken crockery... the family living on an Underground train endlessly going round and round on the Circle Line even though all of Britain's electricity being generated by one guy on a bicycle, yes...

God Save Mrs Ethel Shroake!

DONCOAT

My vote goes to The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T.

A totally weird attempt to make a Dr. Seuss live-action musical. This IMDB trivia entry is revealing:

Quote:

According the Theodor Geisel/Dr. Seuss, the film's director, one of the 150 boys vomited on the piano while filming. This caused a chain reaction and they were left with 150 vomiting boys. Geisel said that the film's reviews were similar.

By now, I have to say I'm bit surprised the neither Shakes the Clown or Wilder Napalm have made the cut.

Yes, Miike is truly one of the weirdest directors out there, and most disturbing.

Battle Royale was awesome.

Three Extremes, if you don't know what asian horror is like, you may not want to watch this film. It contains scenes of a woman eating dead baby fetus in order to look younger.

Weirdest tv series: When They Cry, there's nothing like cute little kids killing each other in very violent ways to creep you out.

For me I'd say Night and the City...Not because the plot was weird, just that you could make a movie with great actors and have it be so damn bad...DeNiro's character is supposed to be irritating and he succeeds so well that when he gets shot, many of the audience( including myself) applauded, because at least he shut up for a minute...didn't last long though since he survived. Seriously this movie is the worst I have ever seen.

Ok fun weird...Laser Mission a terrible direct to video movie with Ernest Borgnine and Brandon Lee...the best part of this movie is there is a buxom blond twit who bounces through the movie and is such a distraction there are moments Brandon can't do his lines he's so distracted

Anything by Ken Russell.

Strangely (perhaps), anything by Kubrick. Anybody who says they truly understand the final 20 minutes of "2001: A Space Odyssey" is either deluded, lying or high. Hell, even Clarke didn't know what it meant, and he wrote the screenplay/novel as it was being filmed. All that inhaling/exhaling throughout the 'open the pod bay doors, HAL'; how nerve-wracking was that?! And as much as we all might love AB in "Full Metal Jacket", the film had its share of Weird ("What is your major malfunction, Private Pyle!"). ...And don't forget "A Clockwork Orange", my droogies and "Eyes Wide Shut" (a.k.a, "What Do Scientologists Get Up To In Their Spare Time?").

So, Ken Russell = trippy-weird and bad...Stanley Kubrick = trippy-weird and good (L. Ron Hubbard Religion-As-Tax-Shelter propaganda films notwithstanding).

Unremarkably,

zoid

P.S.
"Battlefield Earth", by L. Ron Hubbard, starring John Revolta and spouse (flaunting her oral talents) is not Weird, it is just perfectly unintelligible. That's not the same thing.

As a lifelong disciple of Kubrick's, yes I agree that his movies are really bizarre and fucked up, but they are in a good way. Not only can you understand them, but you can get a whole bunch of different understandings in his movies. They're like ink blots. Different people see different things in them.

At first, I was like "EYES WIDE SHUT isn't a L. Ron Hubbard Religion-As-Tax-Shelter propaganda film. BATTLEFIELD EARTH definitely is, but this isn't." But then I realized that was a the beauty of the film to some degree. You see it as that, and I see it as a glorious swan song that hopefully very soon will be considered the classic that it is.

Hey I love this film. It's one of my favourites. I used to have it on video but lent it to a friend who never returned it, and now he moved elsewhere so I'm never seeing that again.

I just loved the way they filmed the food, and the best bit had to be the old master of eating noodle soup going around noodle bars with his student (a would be great noodle soup eater in the making.) Very funny film and one that makes you hungry as you watch.

If I remember correctly the director was shot and killed I believe in his hotel room, I think that's right... It was a long time ago so...

Strange or unusual or campy doesn't equal weird. I'll give you Brazil. Maybe Baron Munchausen...that could be clouded with watching it with my dad. Audition is bizarre. Um, I can't think of any movie I'd classify as weird. Sorry, Ric.

I know folks that have seen Battle Royale. It's more well known than you think.

Hey no need to apologize... I was more interested in seeing if I could see a pattern in peoples choices. Funnily enough I think I can but I'll come to that later.

Brazil I think is wonderful. Munchausen for a cartoonist is a treat and loads of fun.

So did Battle Royale not have much of a release in the US? Over here it's huge. Most of my friends have seen it and it's sequel. It's very popular this side of the pond.

I saw 'Oh Lucky man' when I was ten or so and for me at that age it was weird, I've probably become immune to a lot of weirdness over the years, but recently there has been a slew of horror films that are just weird because they have absolutely no resolve or point, but that seems to be a current trend and I find that weird...

But anyway... Nice to see you around again TWG.

Have this of DVD. D'you know I tried convincing my best friend that this film even existed. And he gave me a deadline to find it and if I didn't he would regard me as just some fraudster. Anyway I did find it and when I showed it to him he was surprised at how many current actors were in it! Christopher Lloyd, Jeff Goldblum, John Lithgow and Peter Weller.

I think the official title is:

"The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai and the Hong Kong Cavaliers across the 8th Dimension" it was Directed by W.D. Richter who wrote Big Trouble in Little China.

Kubrick has to be considered a Western master of Weird, if one takes the long perspective of his body of work. His concentration on the biological aspects of his characters -- i.e., breathing, blinking, nervous gulping -- is downright claustrophobic, and evokes a visceral response without the use of gore.

And I wasn't really serious about "Eyes Wide Shut" being a propaganda film; but there is no available emoticon to indicate my wry sense of humor. I apologize. It was more a commentary on the cast than the filmmaker. You know, "Those darn Scientologists! Always getting up to the kinky games after they knock off work!" sort of wryness. ...Not that they do, mind you. I mean, who knows what Scientologists actually do? Maybe I should ask Tom. He undoubtedly has studied this subject for a number of years and knows more about it than I possibly could... (insert emoticon which reflects my intent to tweak Tommy's nose, just a bit, for being such a dick on national TV)

The good thing about Kubrick's works is that they are still accessible, though Weird, as you pointed out. David Lynch's works, otoh, are what I'd classify as Bizarre: They may be enjoyable and memorable, but quite frequently they are also indecipherable; they are frequently like memories of bad dreams. Others may not make that distinction between Weird and Bizarre, so I'd nominate his "Eraserhead" as the most Bizarre Western-made film I have ever seen, very dreamlike in its disjointedness.

Which brings me to the Eastern films, specifically Japanese movies. These are neither Weird nor Bizarre, in my estimation. The Japanese world-view is so different from that of the West, as to fail to correspond. I love anime. For the artwork. The plots make no sense whatsoever. Ergo, Japanese films are Alien, not Weird.

Remaining in the East, Chinese films are not particularly Alien. I quite often find myself moved to tears at the end of Chinese-made films; "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", "House of Flying Daggers"... It never even occurs to me to be moved by a Japanese film. There is something exquisitely beautiful, true and emotionally common to our Western experiences in Chinese-made films.

They even have a Weird one, which nevertheless manages to pull it all back together (more or less) by movies' end, leaving this viewer feeling emotionally moved, uplifted: "Kung Fu Hustle".

(The Life of) Wryly,

zoid

P.S.
Speaking of Scientology, since you brought it up : How...strange...is it that Nicki Kidman is starring in the remake of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", keeping in mind the ideological subtext of the original?

Okay, so I'm no good at emoticons. They just don't accurately reflect my complex intentions. So, let me say that I apologize to anyone I may have misled or offended whilst poking good-natured fun at Scientology. I truly harbor no ill will toward its adherents (practitioners?). Everyone's got their karmic bills to pay, and if Scientology gets you through the deep, dark hours of the soul: Go for it. Peace.

Right now, I've got to go with Takashi Miike's Master's of Horror entry, the extrememly screwed up Imprint. 60-odd minutes of weird pacing, THREE different backstories for a main character, and the most utterly rutted up Siamese twins to ever appear on screen. Plus some well-done torture, Billy Drago gesticulating a lot, (makes me giggle) and a girl with inexplicably blue hair. Torture-porn it is not, but messed it is.

For example...

When I saw that, probably the greatest WHAT IN THE SWEET BALDHEADED CHRIST IS GOING ON? moment I've had with a movie.

Alien is a good description for foreign movies. They aren't really weird just outside my reference.

Lynch and Kubrick. I see Lynch as making films that I walk out of thinking, "What did I just see? Now I have to watch it again to figure out what that was." Kubrick on the other hand leaves me saying, "That was long. Mostly good, but I don't know if I'll watch it again any time soon."

Sometimes I'll even think, "That was weird."

Oh dear. I hugely enjoyed The Cook the Thief His Wife and Her Lover. I didn't ever feel it had much humanity granted, but I saw that as mysanthropic rather than specifically mysogynist.

But you are right. It had no message. His films generally don't. Just heavy with symbolism.

I didn't see Fellini mentioned, though I would add "wonderfully" "beautifully" and other words to the "weird" part. Casanova was particularily "unique."

"The sea in the film was created from cut-up black trash-bags; Fellini wanted to put high emphasis on the plasticity of Casanova's life and journey."

Donald Sutherland in the lead may tweak some Buffy fans, but it's a must see weird-ish film imho.

Well practically all of Peter Greenaway's films are pretty weird. Like in a Zed and Two Naughts, the two main characters are twins who were born conjoined and were separated soon after, but decide at one point they want to be surgically reattached, and are obsessed with making time-lapse films of dead things decaying.

I saw this clip on YouTube, and it reminded me of this thread. Bruce Campbell talks about one fan encounter he's had a while ago. It's the first thing up, so you don't have to wait for it.

It reminded me of this thread because I think a truly weird, fucked beyond all recognition movie would cause this reaction.

And on a totally unrelated note, I've never seen the BUFFY movie, so I'm not a Donald Sutherland hater like you're apparently supposed to be. I've always seen him as a fairly respectable actor. And anyone who fathers Jack Bauer (fictional or real) has to be a badass.

ORPHEUS

Best foreign (outside of the US) weird film: The Taste of Tea. 2004, Katsuhito Ishii, brilliant film. But any movie where this scene (

) and this scene (

) has really got something weird going on.

Best American weird film: I'm a huge fan of Terry Gilliam, the Coens, Peter Jackson, Sam Raimi, so it takes a lot to make me call something weird. But Errol Morris' Fast, Cheap, & Out of Control probably takes the cake. It's a documentary about a robotics engineer, a topiary gardener, wild animal tamer, and mole rat enthusiast. And the longer the film goes, the harder it is to tell which guy is talking about what, until you realize each man's passion is eerily similar.

Worst American weird: That's easy. Vulgar. Imagine if Kevin Smith tried to remake Blue Velvet. It'd be sorta like that. And still really kinda disturbed. If you really wanna see the trailer, here's a link:

Well practically all of Peter Greenaway's films are pretty weird. Like in a Zed and Two Naughts, the two main characters are twins who were born conjoined and were separated soon after, but decide at one point they want to be surgically reattached, and are obsessed with making time-lapse films of dead things decaying.

Greenaway should really have been a games designer. He is obsessed with making games and telling a story through games.

The Draughtsman's Contract
Drowning By Numbers
The Cook the Thief His Wife and Her Lover
Belly of an Architect
and a Zed and two Naughts, all are littered with tiny visual clues as to what the story is doing, and where it is going. Formula, numbers, word play, time lapse it is all there... The best one for this is Drowning By Numbers which has the numbers 1 - 100 painted or marked out somewhere through the entire film and before you know it you become fixated on trying to find them all. I've never managed to find all one hundred numbers. I think I managed like 30 or so.. Pretty feeble really.

I counter Pi with REQUIEM FOR A DREAM. After seeing that movie, you'll want to swear of medicine of ANY kind, let alone the illegal stuff.

Nobody's mentioned "The Triplets of Belleville" yet, I believe. Weird and wunnerful.

From which "Lux Aeterna" on the soundtrack has been used on practically every (or at least it seems like every) movie trailer ever since...

I love Mirrormask. Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite writers today. If you want some kind of wierd but wonderful fantasy in written form give some of his books a try. Good Omens with Terry Prachett about the somewhat botched biblical apocolypse or Neverwhere (which I've heard started life as a BBC production, must see if I can dig that up anywhere) about the place where you will find the people who slip through the cracks in the world.

What a GREAT thread!! So many of these movies are making me go "Oh yeah! Man was that some weird shit!"

But speaking of weird shit, I cannot believe nobody has mentioned Jodorowsky's "El Topo" and/or "The Holy Mountain" yet!

Way back in the day, my first boyfriend used to drag me to see these movies, over and over, and if you paid me money I couldn't tell you what the f*** was going on in either of them.

Japanese movies may be alien, but if the criteria is to think "What the hell did I just see....?" then "Spirited Away" and "Princess Mononoke" qualify--in a good way.

I thought "Memento" was completely bizarre when I saw it. What a great movie.

"The Magic Christian" was...well, yeah.

"Arsenic and Old Lace"--c'mon! Maybe traditional structure, but old ladies poisoning old gentlemen and burying them in the basement? The uncle who thinks he's Teddy Roosevelt? That's not weird?

Some of the others people have mentioned:

"Dead Ringers" -- Oh MAN! If you are not female and have seen the movie....well, be glad. If you are female and have not seen the movie...think twice, then think again.

"A Boy and His Dog"...YES! YES! That has got to be one of the greates sci fi movies EVER! "And quit calling me Albert!"

Ok, how about some classic mainstream wierd.
The Heathers
Some outsider high school kids knock off the popular students and it make it look like suicide. Suicide is then considered a cool fad. It may have a plot and a story but it's still wierd.

And I'm going to put down Smokin' Aces just because I can't figure out if I liked it or thought it was a total piece of crap. And I'm usually quite opinionated about movies.

And Erg, I LOVE Arsenic and Old Lace. It's one of my favorite movies.

Arsenic and Old Lace is a great play. Makes a great high school drama production if your students have the stamina (it's long and demanding). 'Course I loved the Cary Grant cinematic version...
