SCHOOLBOYSWINK

I'm afraid some might find this to be inappropriate, but I'm in a situation where I feel like I have to do something, and I don't know what else I can do...

I've recently learned that someone very close to me is beginning another bout with cancer. The prognosis this time is not very good. For any of you folk as have a faith that believes in prayer, I wouldn't turn any down.

This isn't the kind of thing I expect anybody to reply to directly. Making ME feel better is not the point of this. I thought, though, that maybe if anybody else had a concern or worry in their part of the 'Verse, maybe they'd feel like posting it here, too.

Like I said, maybe some people think this isn't appropriate. On the main, though, this place has felt a lot like a family in the few weeks I've been here. Maybe not the stereotypical kind of family, but still a kind of one, and the way I was brought up family looks to each other when there's trouble. I figure maybe I'm not the only one in a need. If I'm wrong, then I guess there was no harm done anyhow.

As always, thanks for listening, Browncoats.

While not religious myself, I think this is a right fine idea. Maybe a message board category, on the right of the main page. Most of the other boards I belong to have something similar. Everyone needs comfort or knows someone who needs comfort or prayers at some point.

I'll be thinking of your friend and hoping for the best.

I don't much believe in prayer myself, but I will be sending thoughts and feelings of healing your friends way.

SBW,

You're right to come "home" for comfort and to ask for assistance and good thoughts. Regardless of our individual feelings regarding religion or prayer we're all fellow Browncoats and "this boat is our home." And you are rightly "on the crew" or in Mal's silent language it's a given you're family.

I myownself pray after a fashion. I light a candle when I know a friend or someone or even a something ( like my kitten Milo who was ill ) needs shiny thoughts. I believe there is an intrinsic goodness that comes from sharing good thoughts with each other that is akin to prayer. I believe it does the same thing. So my new beautiful white candle will be lit and my thoughts will be with your friend.

As for having a "Shepherds Corner" or somesuch... we'd have to start it and maintain it because as with most threads it'd disappeaer quickly.
Maybe Haken will start a side panel for such things. For now we could start one in the Assistance Needed subforum probably.

SBW, you're a fine friend for coming to your friend's aid. I had been missing seeing you on the board and wondered if something was wrong. Come back here often for support... I've done it many times and never been disappointed.
I know it sounds corny but just seeing that galley in the picture at the top of the site has cheered me many a time.

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

SchoolboysWink, thanks for sharing this with you online family. We're a friendly and supportive bunch, especially when one of our own needs us.

I'm sending all the positive thoughts I can your friend's way. I'll keep them in my thoughts and I hope that all of you come through this okay.

DONCOAT

Sending shiny hopes and wishes your way, to pass along to your friend.

Things do sound bleak, the way you state them, but hang in there... sometimes cases come along that "bust the curve", so to speak.

If only we had a "House, M.D." solution for all our real-world problems!

SBW –

I've never been real sure of my skill level when it comes to prayer (or exactly who I'm praying to), but like FollowMal kinda says, it's something I've been known to engage in...and you and your friend will most assuredly be included. I lost my grandfather to cancer years ago, and while by now I'm surely over it, I can still remember some of what it was like at the time. Anyway, is there a first name or nickname of your friend's that you'd care to share? I don't know that it makes any difference in the grand scheme, but it helps me a little to have a moniker of some sort to "focus" on...

My thoughts and prayers are with you both. You're a stand-up Browncoat (like there's any other kind).

It was like that when we got here!

P.S. – As for "inappropriate," surely by now you've sampled a fair-ish cross-section of what gets posted on here (and I ain't complainin' about a word of it)...and some of it's a lot stranger than prayer requests...

Wash, I imagine if you believe in a Divinity that is powerful enough to hear your heartfelt thoughts, then that Divinity will get the message regardless of your own personal articulation or whether you put the "right" name in front of it. That's my humble take on Faith, anyway.

Mountain Man will do. (My witholding of a 'real' name isn't meant to reflect any lack of trust in all you fine Browncoats. Just one of the dangers of the 'net is that, unfortunately, you never know who is just lurking.)

Also, sorry about your grandfather. I lost the second of mine about 18 months ago (the first a few years before that). It gets better in time, but nothing can really replace what is lost when a loved one passes. Things still get to me sometimes. I don't typcally listen to country music, but a few months back I was flicking through stations on my radio and heard one about heaven that said something to the effect of "I'll walk beside my grandpa, and he'll match me step for step." The first grandfather we lost had spent the last few years of his life in a wheelchair, so when I heard that line of music I just lost it, even years later. Unfortunately, I was on my way to work, so I didn't have much time to compose myself after that.

My thanks to all of you. In the Highlander series Duncan MacLeod once said, "A big part of who we are depends on who we meet." Well met.
