Because in "The Train Job" (which was first broadcast Sept. 20th) the opening scenes take place on Unification Day.

Though personally, I always figured December 20th was Unification Day, because that's when the pilot "Serenity" was shown, and on F*X that was it, game over. Canceled. Finished. End of the line.
