While I strongly agree with the first choice I thought the rest of the list was very poorly thought out and had too many demands for proper remakes and video game spin-offs.

Loved their first choice - of course. ;)

From the rest of the line up, I'd only pick Halo to be made into a movie. ( It is now, isn't it? )

Think they can find a place for Nathan, Adam and Alan in it? They're in the game, seems only right. ;)

" Han Solo type mercenary "....sorry, but I don't like that characterization for Mal and Serenity. The writer gets credit for at least having it on the list, but if he thinks that our verse is anything similar in any way to Lucas' total bullshit movies, then I simply say......TRAP!!!

Well, other than Serenity II and Halo, the other choices suck.

Here's my picks!

1. Serenity II
2. Halo
3. Ghost in the Shell (as a live action movie)
4. Cyborg (An updated version of Martin Cadin's book, that the Six Million Dollar Man series was loosely based on).
5. Galaxy Quest 2 (You know you want it!) :)
6. Buffy, the movie. (with the series cast, and Angel included)
7. Doctor Who the Movie (With current Doctor, David Tennet, and bring back Rose)!!!
8. The Day the Earth Stood Still (A modern remake)
9. Space Balls II
10. Serenity III

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

Sorry Jongsstraw, but I beg to differ. Joss himself has admitted that Mal and the ship Serenity was inspired by Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon.

Granted, Joss brought more to the Malcolm Reynolds character and his ship Serenity, than George ever did with Han.

Joss also gave his character a far better crew to fly with, than George's idea of a "Walking Carpet" and "Farm Boy" as side kicks.

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

the list is pretty good though I disagree with him on that there should be a remake of Wing Commander since it was a great movie, but I'm annoyed he's chosen 2 or 3 films which he thinks should be remade when he could of added things like The Dark Knight Returns(0f the graphic novel), Half-Life, Back to the Future 4, Austin Powers 4, or Metroid to the list. The number one film on the list is definitely the best, obviously and probably the most likely to be made out of that list with all the news, rumours, new DVD, & new merchandise around at the moment.

Hmmm.

Serenity II
Angel (sorry, folks, but the TV series was fine for me, and Angel needs a better wrap-up than the series got)
Dark Angel *activates chrisisall-signal*
I'll echo the Halo sentiment. Perhaps with Adam as the Master Chief.
Reboot (even if only to wrap up the original series)
Vigilante (based on the obscure DC comics character, and starring Nathan as the Last Cowboy)
Wonder Woman (as written by Joss, and starring Morena)
Thundercats (hey, how 'bout Gina as Cheetarah?)
A big screen Heroes story would give us the budget to have a real Power-Battle.
Not sure how it could be done, but I'd squee for a W.I.T.C.H. movie, whether animated or live-action (or even just a plain old Third Season ).
Wouldn't mind seeing "Avatar" and "Unity" adapted into a couple of Deep Space Nine movies (the books are so damn perfect, but I'd kill for movie-style interpretations of the Jem'Hadar).

Also, any original movie that I come up with in the future (I've got several, if anyone's interested).

Great Thinkin' MacB ! A naughty man you are , to slip in Serenity 3 like that !

Also , 'Cyborg' is an inspired choice...Marty's books were great ! Might as well make the sequels to Cyborg , also...'Operation:Nuke' and 'High Crystal'...both were great reads !

Seein' that the next Indy film will be called 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' had gotten me thinkin' back about the 6Mega-buck Man books , 'High Crystal' particularly...

I'd love to see Clarke's 'Rendezvous With Rama' added to any top-ten list...The movie could not be made without CGI , but it would be a 'trip' like 2001...Morgan Freeman owns the rights ; wish he'd get busy with that !

I'd like to see Joss make David Webers "Honor Harrington Series" into a major motion picture. It would suit Joss nicely with the strong female lead. The spaceship battles depicted in the books would be the most awesome thing ever seen on screen.

Ok here goes,

Angel: His Girl Friday (based on the Misty Flores fanfic, updated would make a killer movie)

Dark Angel (we do need to see how the transgenics go out and begin to fix Max's broken world)

Serenity 2 (Please bring in Tim Minear to help out this time Joss)

Reboot

Roughnecks: Starship Trooper Chronicles Finale (The dialogue was recorded years ago, Sony could start prodution today if it wanted)

Captain America (something that completely throws political correctness out the window and introduces us to a soldier from the forties, I have a script in the works)

Deus Ex (based on the first Warren Specter game)

Full Throttle (this tale of bikers in a dystopian future with its dark and quirky sense of humor would be really entertaining)

XMen: The Age of Apocolypse ( An animated franchise reboot with a new and very large cast including Jim Carey as the voice of Abyss)

Star Trek: Semper Fi (couldn't resist:)

Honorable mention:

Birds of Prey: The Series (another extension of the DCAU started by Bruce Timm/Paul Dini... again, I have a few ideas:)

The fellow only gets points for putting Serenity II on top of that list. But the rest is pathetic. He's basically putting vidio games on the screen.

The Matrix does need a prequel, though. The first one was awesome, but 2 and 3 ruined it.

There is one movie that I can think of that needs a serious re-do, and that's The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy. I haven't even finished reading the book yet, but I know that the movie does the story no justice.

My list (not stictly sci-fi, don't read alot of the stuff):
1~Serenity II
2~Fantastic Four III
3~Men in Black III
4~Ghostbusters III
5~Serenity III

And I can only think up five. Pathetic, I know, but I'm not a big movie buff. More like a reading buff. Now, I could give you a good-sized list of all the books I'd want... LOL.

yes yes this has the right idea

Serenity/Firefly has so many, no no not the right phrase. Has got "too" many stories not to get a sequel

Halo and Starcraft should get a movie cause they need one and they'd be just fun tio watch. They maybe just shoot them up no stop explosions but a movie like that now and then is healthy

and Doom needs to be done right, plain and simple

I'm all for Honor Harrington & Galaxy Quest II!

I'd also add Elizabeth Moon's Vatta's War series to my list. Great strong female lead with plenty of space travel, intrigue & action to make into a series of movies (too much info for just one, and you couldn't leave it at just one!).

Oh, yeah, and Serenity II & III (natch)!!!

I'd rather be a smartass than a dumbass...

Totally agree, as opposed to SERENITY 2, the rest I could live without. Not a video game person so movie versions of HALO and other games I could care less about. Never cared for THE MATRIX, so the ten minute prequel was enough for me. And I'm starting to think I'm the only person on the planet that doesn't consider the SW prequels blasphemy. Jeez, is there so much sour grapes in the STAR WARS fanbase that it's spilled over into the original trilogy?

As per the ones suggested, GALAXY QUEST 2 is iffy, since both GHOSTBUSTERS 2 and MEN IN BLACK 2 sucked. Sci-fi/fx comedies are incredibly tricky and very rarely work. The originals do, but the sequels don't, so as cool as it would be to see GQ2, I know it might not work. And as per BACK TO THE FUTURE 4? I would have the same vehemence to it that all the STAR WARS fans have with the prequels. That's where all my prequel hatred would go towards. BACK TO THE FUTURE is my Holy Trilogy, and one of the reasons I like it is because the creators have said that 3 is enough. After filming Part 3, lightning struck the Hill Valley 1885 set and it burnt to the ground. They took that as a sign that they should never make a 4.

So, what sci-fi flicks would I like to see? Well, aside from SERENITY 2, RENDEZVOUS WITH RAMA definitely as a Freeman/Fincher reunion. I've never read any of the JOHN CARTER OF MARS books, but I'm excited by the Pixar adaptation that's in the works. But the one book that I'd be very impressed if it were to actually get made, even if it were a poorly made version, is UP THE LINE by Robert Silverberg. Anyone whose read that book knows that it is an almost impossible book to adapt, what with the jumping to various centuries of the Byzantine era and the paradoxes that it's filled to the brim with, as well as tons of sex (and not good sex too. One character boasts about having sex with his grandma in the past. Ewww.)

Oh, and THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is getting re-made with Keanu Reeves as Klattu. I know one guy wants this remade, but to me this would be like remaking 2001 or PLANET OF THE APES. Complete blasphemy. THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is one of the few absolutely perfect science fiction movies ever made. It's almost 60 years old, yet it hasn't aged a day. So in terms of this remake, I am proceeding with extreme prejudice.

I dunno. I'd be more impressed with an original science fiction movie that's not based on a book or video game. You know what I'd like to see? A sci-fi version of GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER? You know, a normal boy meets girl, both like each other, but families butt heads type story, but it would be between humans and an intergalactic race. I mean, you could see that on maybe STAR TREK, but by the original series, various species from across the universe were already fucking.

If someone were to do that, they'd have my respect as a storyteller. I know it's a simple story, but usually the simplest stories are the msot revolutionary.

Serenity 11 I can agree with, and I can't believe people haven't said this but Alien 3 NEEDS to be redone. If only as Alien 5.

After the second one I feel that's the true end. Ellen and crew drifted off, maybe found a planet somewhere free of humans and alien armies and she, the sargent, the kid, and the android all lived happily ever after. Better than that crap that was the third installment.

Anyway, has no-one considered Army of Darkness 4? Which has been a wish of many but doesn't seem to be on the shelf. Just one more installment of Cambell, that chin, and that glint of mischief in his eyes.

Hail to the 4th King baby.

What about "The Forever War" by Joe Haldeman.
"Burning Bright" by Melissa Scott.

Buffy/Angel

1. Serenity sequel, of course
2. Starship Troopers, a GOOD version this time plz!
3. Bolo, by Kieth Laumer, would make an awesome special effects picture
4. A movie from the Warhammer 40k universe would be a great special effects choice, too, and would be a good choice to build a continuing franchise aroud as well. The Horus Heresy, to start perhaps...
5. Another vote for The Mote in God's Eye

I heard that there is an Ender movie in development, and OSC is writing the screeplay, and heavily involved in the production.

Last update on OSC's site was March 2006.

Here is Imdb:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0400403/
it's in pre-production. Next year - Ender's Game.
It will combine the story lines of Game and Shadow.

Serenity II! Yes!

From a book standpoint, I'd love to see a good film rendition of some of Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game" or the "Shadow" series. Apparently one's been in the works for years, with Card supposedly even writing the script, it just haven't happened yet.

I saw "Snow Crash" on another one of these lists (this one: http://www.pointlesswasteoftime.com/film/scifi.html) and couldn't agree more. It's practically WRITTEN like a movie script.

Good stuff.

EDIT: Wow. Talk about being beaten to the punch. :P

I couldn't agree with this more! Anyone who ever Heinlein's book knows that movie was a sorry sack of shit. I agree that the list should have more books than video games on it. How about Octavia Butler's Dawn.

I abhor the idea of another Back to the Future, Space Balls, or Galaxy Quest but I'm open to another Ghostbusters.

I'm also not so sure about remaking The Day the Earth Stood Still. I'm just not sure how it could be improved, plus, the present global fear isn't nuclear war but terrorism and I don't think that would attract a super-intelligent alien being to give us a warning if nukes didn't.

Why does this guy go to computer games for ideas when there are hundreds of excellent books that are waiting to be made into movies. Has this guy ever read a book?

What about "The Forever War" by Joe Haldeman.

Bump.

What about some Issac Assimov? I always thoughtFoundation could be a good movie.

And I'd like to see Starship Troopers with real Mobile Infantry. Suits with nukes coming out of fingers and like.

There's a whole heap of Heinlein novels or short stories that would make great movies

Glory Road- a sword and sorcery story with a serious theme.

Stranger in a Strange Land- sex and religion...

The Moon IS a Harsh Mistress- a Lunar colony, a revolution and a space war.

and an honest remake of Starship Troopers..

I'd like to see Elizabeth Moon's series with Heris Serrano and Esamay Suiza in film form (or TV), but the script would probably get messed up by hollywood.

The problem with studios is that scifi cost money. "The Brothers McMullen" cost under $100K because it's just drama. So what does Hollywood do? Choose to make $50M dramas that nobody wants to see, instead of that money on scifi which would actually show up on screen.

In terms of books being made into movies, I would love to see Robin Hobb's Live Ship Traders trilogy on the big screen. They would probably work better than her Assassin trilogy because they take place over a relatively short period of time (less than 2 years).

Ummmm, I believe Jim Cameron is doing Avatar.

No, Cameron's Avatar is another story (a science fiction thing, about colonizing another planet). Shyamalan is doing the adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

I know a few otherwise right-thinking people who thought the Starship Troopers movie was the space marine's pajamas...but I'm with DerangedMilk on the subject. To me it was a bunch of pretty people on pretty sets delivering stilted dialogue. There's any number of Heinlein books I'd like to see movie-fied...as long as the directing (and, to a somewhat lesser extent, the acting) were decent (for a given value of 'decent').

Other than that...I'd like to see, before I die, one or more of Pratchett's Disc World books on the big screen...and some of Bujold's Vorkosigan stories...and John Ford's "Final Reflection" (from the Star Trek 'verse). The only director I know I would trust with any of this stuff is Peter Jackson...and that's 'coz I'm STILL getting over the cumulative religious experience that was the LOTR movies.

EDIT: ...and Serenity(s) II thru XX go without saying...though - does this sound weird to anybody? - IF it were a choice between EITHER getting Mal and Co. back on TV OR back on the big screen...I think I'd choose TV...

It was a teenage cinema dreamland when we got here!

of course Serenity II, and all you people who keep asking "why video games?" perhaps it's because some video games have great stories and storytelling, and therefore deserve to be movies (only if done the right way, though in Halo's case fans are so rabid that no writer or director would dare alter the story for fear of his own life)

but my main point is that some video games (Halo, maybe Half-life) deserve to be movies

Why is the rum always gone?
