According to Joss Serenity is River telling Mal's story. Blame all the idiosyncrasies on her.

I think that was there for the coolness factor rather than any story. After all, she would know about the alliance about to blow a hole in the wall... especially as during her fight sequence you see the bolts come through to get hold of it... but she still does not do anything.

(Another question - if it is River telling Mal's story, the question for me is what happened to Mal ?(in the future) Why is he not telling it himself?)

Because River is the "incarnation of Mal's tortured spirit", I had to use that here, I just love it!

No mystery. Since the Alliance burst through the wall behind River just seconds later, the blast doors opening means that they'd chosen to override all the interior locks in anticipation of the breach-and-raid attack that followed.

The fact that River just happened to be in a kick-ass bad-girl poster pose at that second can be attributed to Fate being a great director.

Drama and remember, she can kill you with her brain.

I've given my personal explanation of how the door opened to reveal River in the witchblade pose before...

River is crazy and has a sense of humor. After lopping off the head of the last Reaver she ran over, slapped the button and then ran back and posed just to impress the crew of Serenity.

It's much more funny to think of it this way than some lame "the Alliance blew all the doors in the entire complex at just that time even though they had apparently made it to just outside the room containing every Reaver on the planet" explanation.

That is an excellent explination.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

Mal's not the kind of guy who talks about his past. Just ask Yo-saf-bridge.

I had thought it was due to Mal opening up the elevator doors when he came back (and all the doors behind him). This was a security pathway developed by Mr Universe. When he's coming out, it may have had timed circuits to open forthcoming doors. I had thought some description had been given about the time Mal goes down the elevator, but I'd have to review.

Or else River opens it with her mind.

But the alliance override sounds good.

Best explanation so far. :)

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar...

...It's movie magic, baby. It's the money shot. It's the perfectly timed climax (of the movie, you pervs).

...It's equal parts Seren(dip)ity and cinematic license. Don't try to make too much sense of it. Just go with it. As long as it's remotely possible that it all happened that bang-bang fast, why get twisted in a knot that Joss made it happen that way? Would you have been happier if Joss had the blast door open after the Purps tore out the wall, after the Op told them to stand down?

I mean, there's got to be some literary rules, as well as logical ones, right?

Respectfully,

zoid

P.S.
That was a great shot. Along with the one of Mal with blood in his eye, just before the Op says "Stand down..."

All idiosyncrasies aside, we have no idea how powerful River really is. When she told Jayne that she could kill him with her brain, we assume she was just scaring him, but she could have been telling the truth, and if so, then why couldn’t she have pressed the button inside with her mind?

Also make's me wonder if River somehow controlled Jayne by planting the idea of going for a 'niiiiiice shuttle ride', so she could escape from being locked up. She did after all kick his butt back in the bar.

If anyone could be controlled by their base impluses it would be Jayne.

Also makes me think she may have kept Jayne asleep during the whole Objects in Space episode, because she knew he would screw up her cunning plan.

There is no doubt that she and Mal are the central and important characters to this story

One of the reaver's heads that she had just lopped off flew over and hit the button, you can see it bouncing to the right.

But wasn't the door rigged so it could not be opened from the outside?

Why would you assume she was not being entirely truthful and candid?

Lucky coincidence.:<)
Five minutes earlier, and everybody woulda been reaver-lunch.
Five minutes later, and she'd have had to say, " You should have seen what just happened..."

There is a Mystery Science Theater spoof about Serenity that mentions this.

ZOE: Sir...
MAL: It’s done. Report. ....River?
[blast doors open to reveal River surrounded by dead Reavers]
MIKE: Oh great. Nice job of rigging the blast doors so they won’t open again, Kaylee.

I think the best explanation is that Mal came in through the elevator, and the next door was rigged to open. All though the theory about the Alliance over-riding the doors works well too.
