I did a little personal experiment for fun this month. I met my clients' family and introduced to them names from Firefly. Here are some of my favorites:

"Hey, my name's Mingo but my friends call me Fanty." They asked me why. Trying my best to keep from laughing, I replied, "Because Fanty's prettier."

Another one I said, "Pleased to meet you too, sir, I'm Simon. Simon Tam."

Another introduction I introduced myself as Badger. I agreed with them with my name being odd.

In another, the groom's father introduced himself as Dave. I introduced myself as Nishka. The man asked, "Oh, are you Eastern European or something?" And I attempted a horrible Russian accent saying, "Ah, you know your names. That's good for reputation. Dave gets it done; that's the talk." Or something like that. He laughed at me, but obviously just being polite thinking I was making some unfunny joke.

Since then I try to put character names in wherever I can. In some fast food restaurants, they want to know your name so it can be called out when the food is ready. I'll tell them things like, "Jayne, with a Y." Or "Shepard Book."

If anyone else is as weird as I am, please share. It's seriously fun. Do your best to quote the show when people talk to you.

I've never introduced myself as a firefly character but I had the nickname Wash for awhile. It didn't stick though, to my disappointment. For some reason they liked calling me Mr. Tea more... I should probably explain why. Well I drink quite a bit of tea and I wash my hands a bit more than most people. Anyway if I ever had to work a job again where a name tag is required, hopefully never again, I'll put Wash on it and see what happens. Seeing as I am a bit quirky and prone to making a joke at a stressful moment... not to mention the fact I wear Hawaiian shirts more often than pants, I'd say the name would suit me.

Anyway I'll try introducing myself as a firefly character next time I meet someone new. Might be interesting... Hi I'm Jayne...

I have that same problem, small town and even people I DON'T know seem to know my name. Close to moving to Kansas City, Missouri soon, hopefully by spring, so there will be alot of new people to fool.

Thanks. I just finished reading Ender's game for the first time last week and I loved that quote.

I managed two whole weeks once as a telemarketer. HATED it. For a while, I entertained myself by changing my name every phone call, and pretending I was seeing if people responded better to one name over another. Yes, this job was beyond mind-numbingly dull. It was, unfortunately, pre-firefly, so I never had the chance to use our BDH's names.

I havn't done this yet but here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to go to another restaurant where your name must be called to receieve your food. For the name, I'm going to write down "Operative".

When they call my name, I'm going to strafe toward the counter and when I grab my food, I'll tell the restaurant employee, "See? I came at you sideways."

Ah, the little shit in life that keeps me grinnin'

Being notoriously good at accents, I am going to introduce myself as Adelai and do the whole Russian accent.

I once answered the phone at work (in a restaurant) in a British accent. And an American one.

I've done a Skwisgaar Skwigelf impression too. That was fun.
