If you like anime, you've most likely seen "Trigun". If you like Trigun AND Firefly, you've probably seen the similarities. So, what do you think?

Mal = Vash?
Book = Wolfwood?
Meryl = Inara?
Milly = Kaylee?
Legato = Niska?

Hello, first time posting. I think it's a little more like the cowboy bebop show. With the dark past and blues themes. There is a lot of fist fights and gun battles too :)

The scene with River in the box was VERY remenicient of Outlaw Star. Very fun anime, btw.

It's been said there are only five basic plots in all of human literature (and life). I'm sure that even with thousands of varients within those five basic plots, there are still only so many stories that can be told.

A good story-teller doesn't tell a new story - there is no such thing (only people who are young enough for it to be new to them).
A good story-teller tells a new spin on an old story.

Love Firefly. Love Bebop. Own both Boxed sets (The Bebop one cost me around three hundred bucks...limited edition and all that jazz...and worth every penny of it)

I think Im drawn by the idea that these people are stuck on a ship, relying on no one but themselves, overcoming (sometimes) all kinds of obstacles.

The music on both shows is fabulous (Dont speak a word of Japanese but I've bought more Bebop cd's than of any other band) and the characterization and storylines are addictive.

Its funny. I actually pity those who have no idea of what they are missing and who sit in front of the tv watching back to back reality shows.

Well, the characters of Lain and River I guess is the more obvious one. River seems kinda divided into multiple people just as Lain was divided into three people. You have the normal river, the calm, serene, "all your secrets are belong to me" river, and the "chaos has returned, jayne looks better in red" river. The whole concept of "2 by 2, hands are blue." The "men in black", as they are called, in Lain come after her the same way. And I'm not sure if you remember, but Lain's Dad's password for his computer was "One Tow Count Bule", which is a reference to a line from a book thats "One Two, Count Blue".

Theres a great site called Thought Experiments Lain that explains a lot of the hidden meanings and references in the anime...a guy wrote his senior thesis on it.

I have thought of the similarities between Trigun and Firefly, but I never compared Mal and Vash.^^ The two are just so different. The biggest image in my head is from 'Serenity' when Mal walks on board and puts a bullet in that gorram Alliance agent's head without breaking stride. Mal is willing to kill people when the need arises. Vash was adamantly opposed to killing anyone and went to great lengths to avoid doing so.

I actually think the two characters wouldn't get along at all if they were to meet up.^^

Just because they are both westerns doesn't mean they are anything alike.

Yes,

I am just watching Trigun now and thinking about how it reminded me of firefly and what do I see on the mailing list but this!

Yes, it has the same speech patterns, same type of humour, Mal and Vetch even have the same type of clothes. They both spend there time trying to live quiet lives while the universe falls apart around them.

The other characters are also similar.

I am not saying they are copies or anything like that but the attitude and the setting are similar.
I enjoy both :)

First off, his name is Vash. Second, they have almost no technology in Trigun, as it was nearly all lost after Knives went crazy on everyone.
Third, Mal wears a simple brown duster, while Vash wheres a fancy red coat with tons of buttons. Fourth, Mal has little problem with killing people when he feels they earned it, whereas Vash nearly goes mad after killing one person. Fifth, Mal doesn't really try to live a quiet life. Sure, he'd like things to go smoother than they do most of the time, but as he said in the Train Job, he enjoys messing with the Alliance. As I said before, just because they are westerns, that doesn't mean they are anything alike.
