Why do you love Firefly?

generally, its the craftyness of the production. in most other shows, the only speaking you hear is from those in the foreground, that you are meant to hear. but in firefly you can hear the murmur of the other characters in the background. its like actually being onboard the boat. i love the way that the rythm of the music will attach itself to a character's expression or movement or what not. greg and the editors are geniuses. like "i knew you let her kiss you", and you see inara's look of confusion and the music matches that perfectly. also i have the hotpants for kaylee so im always lookin at her.

The characters sold it for me. I cared about all of them from the very first (genuine pilot) episode. By the end of OiS, I felt like I knew all of them. They became that real.

I wanted to hang out with Wash, listen to stories from Joe and Mal, umnn...umnn...give Kaylee a reason to throw out her batteries, and talk to River all night long (even though, as she'd put it, "night" doesn't apply in the black per se).

I wanted to talk to her most of all; she was just so fascinating, and came right out of the screen.

I cared about the characters, I felt my heart sink in the pilot when Mal tells Simon that Kaylee died (I bought it), I felt Kaylee's joy when she got her pink frilly dress, I cried during River's soliloquy to Jubal (I bought that she was going to leave with him, although I believe her words were genuinely heartfelt, too), I cheered when the crew liberated Mal in War Stories, I really cheered when River saved Kaylee in War Stories, and I loved watching the relationship unfold between Mal and River.

I felt River's joy at the end of OiS, when she floats down to Mal. I felt the depth of his feelings for her (which manifest all through BDM) when he touches her fingertips, pulling her down to the ship. I care about them as if they were real.

I also like how the show constantly pulled the rug out from under me: The scene in War Stories, when Zoe had to choose between Wash and Mal, is a perfect example. Isn't that the cliched conflict? Duty versus love? Wasn't that a running undercurrent through the episode? Couldn't you just feel Niska's joy in giving this choice to Zoe, in him thinking he's about to mentally and emotionally torture her?

Umnn...nope. Zoe picks Wash in a heartbeat.

Even Serenity itself was a character: The way Firefly was shot, the ship just felt so real. Not a model in space and a bunch of rooms inside that may or may not in any way correspond to the exterior shots, but real, organic, whole.

It all just made me want to be with them, on that ship. I loved the show 'cause that was as close as I could get.

It was several reasons that got me addicted to Firefly.

1. the characters You really felt like you'd been there. The people aboard the Serenity were so real and human. They all had different quirks, motivations, longings, bonds and dislikes.

2. the stories some of them were really unique. And even if they were not, they were told in such a tremendously unique way, you couldn't help but be transfixed in front of the TV.

3. the humor What can I say? This show has the funniest, wittiest dialogue I've ever seen in a series that is not in the comedy genre. That it doesn't hurt the episodes in any way is even more astounding.

Actors who worked on Star Trek said it was a joke, they're looking at all these foreign-looking styrofoam colored in pastel representing rocks, and it seemed fake. Back then, it was futuristic. Firefly sets don't look anything like that, not fake. I really wanted to help River - and most of us probably felt that way because we saw or heard all of her premonitions, like nobody else in the show could. Who didn't want to help Kaylee with her battery problems? Jayne and Mal were seriously intense and unpredictable characters. These were not soap opera roles, where nothing happened in an episode. Either of them could actually die in an episode. The Special Effects were outstanding, and innovative, groundbreaking. The SFX vision of Loni as well as Joss was amazing. It became seamless unless you really were looking for it.

In short, the suspension of disbelief was unparalleled by scifi on TV. (the weakest link being HoG).

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

The underlying themes of freedom and family are what drew me to the show and made me feel so moved to become part of the online community. Never felt so strongly compelled to get involved the way I did with Firefly.

Yeah, it's all about the characters and how flawed they are and how we all relate to them one way or another and the wit.

And, for me, it's not so much about Mal's and River's relationship or how much he cares for her, but that he would take up her cause and inspire others to do the same, because it's the just thing to do and it doesn't have anything to do with coin or self adoration. It’s the everyday hero for me.

if you compare star trek and firefly, they are on about the same time frame. but in firefly, people are still using toilet paper and duct tape. they wear regular streetclothes, they carry guns with bullets, not phasers. its like the real world right now, so its relateable, and the spaceships just make it seem that much more fun.
