Jericho fans sent Nuts to CBS and had their show resurrected, now The 4400 fans are sending sunflower seeds to the USA network in hopes of reviving their show.

I wonder what foodstuffs might have swayed Fox to keep Firefly flying?

Well, our main show-relevant options are fresh bao, synthesized protein, (not)chocolate cake, wife soup, or whatever those Alliance survival rations were made of.

Ooh, or maybe some of River's "mystery meals" (standard tin cans with the labels torn off).

Fruity Oaty bars. I do recall that they pretty much exist as those oaty breakfast bars (some have fruit in them). This is one of them:

Someone should organise this! Someone clever. Someone not me. It may not bring back the show but its sure to annoy Fox and that would tickle me a bit.

Strawberries are a good idea too. Especially cause they will go off after a time. I like the mystery can idea cause if they dont know what they are they cant really use them.

The mystery cans could also appear to be some sort of "terrorist plot" against Fox, therefore getting us a lot of publicity.

Good suggestions, all of them. My take:

Strawberries, while pivotal in the pilot (and Kaylee's character), will spoil rapidly on this Earth-That-Is, rendering them unsuitable for donating to charity. And the charity angle is important: Our cause would get big points if any foodstuffs sent in could get donated to charity. (Worked for the nuts sent in on behalf of Jericho.) Whereas, 40 tons of rotting strawberries might have a somewhat adverse affect on our cause.

Just saying'.

Canned foodstuffs with labels removed have longevity (plus a great tie-in to River, of course), but that might limit their donatability. Maybe foodstuffs with the labels removed, yet with the brand and contents written on via a Sharpie? (That whole gimmick in and of itself could lead to a news story, as people wonder why foodstuffs donated have the labels removed. And we could explain, "Well, it's simple, you see. They're symbolic of a 17-year old girl with a stripped amygdala, who's a sharp-shooting trained assassin psychic escapee from a totalitarian government, with a dangerous secret lodged in her brain. And, umnn, who just tore labels off of food this one time. No, we don't know exactly why. But that's just River for you. She's cute that way. Oh, and she can kill you with her brain, so put our damn show back on TV!")

Finally, save any and all fruity cereal bar donations for Universal, not FOX. We need those to help bring about the movie sequel.

:)

Removing the label would likely make them a non-donate regardless of if there is a "label" written on or not. I also highly doubt that they'll take them if the label is ripped off, but put back on somehow. Something to look into at any rate before decisions are made.

But, I also got to say that I don't think that anyone can reasonably think that a FF series is going to make it onto TV again. But, there is the movie that made money. So, that'd probably be the better bet and as such, a more profitable venture.

I'll also point out that reproducing what another fandom did that got a lot of publicity isn't necessarily the best way to go about things. Also, because of that, it stands much less of a chance of getting any publicity at all.

Something new, or at least a twist on something new-er, is what is needed. Here's me putting
forth an idea.

Viral stuff. Yes, I know, not new. But, here it out.

First have some videos that are just text with eerie music in the background (no vocals). Continuing on, having some videos that display different specific aspects about the series/movie. I say specific because each video shouldn't be more than ONE minute or so. So, have some displaying torture (a la River), some displaying evil bastards (a la Niska), some displaying lose of faith (a la Mal), some displaying oppressive regimes (a la the Alliance), etc. Of course having something along the fruity oaty bar commercial in there as well. Also, have them really mixed up so it's obvious that "it" is all these things. But, do the subliminal thing of briefly putting the blue sun logo up a couple times. At the end, of course, display a url. Something like, bluesunvirus.com or some such. But, through this, make sure to be vague about what is being talked about. That way, people get the "what's this all about?" going on.

The part to make this work is to make a lot of them and scatter them across the net as much as possible (youtube, blogs, etc). Obviously, making the available on the site as well. The site being very pretty and very professional.

Once the point is reached that people are starting the whole wtf thing, then one can start leaking some info about what's going on. The website, at this point, could start to have a forum of some kind.

Now, of course, the whole point can't be, "send letter to Universal to get us another movie", but something else. Perhaps, making it coincide with other goings on in the community. Not something like viewings, but something more. I know that the EV Nova guys are still hard at work making there FF mod and getting closer to a release as time goes by. That could be something to coordinate on. Perhaps some fan made "series" could be made, or better yet, a spoof on the series could be released somewhere in that time-line. Not sure where Multiverse is in there (if at all).

Please note that all of the above coordination efforts are required for this to work. Because, we need to offer some stuff to the people so that they'll either like it and become fans, or not. Offer them nothing, and the latter is pretty much a guarantee.

There is another requirement that is just, if not more, important. That is, to make this a secret project within the community. Nothing would spoil the efforts more if a simple Google search would give it all away. So, if people are going to take this up, let me know and I'll edit this idea out of this post.

I'll mention that the level of effort here is obviously rather high. Both for prep work as well as during. But, I'll also mention that level of effort is tightly coupled to the potential level of gain. That is, nothing worth doing is easy. At any rate, that's basically it more or less.

I'll with point out that the above does play to what the community has successfully done in the past. Namely, music vidoes (same/similar skills for the above) and the EV Nove guys have proven a dedicated bunch.

Now onto what I'm willing to do. I have some ideas for videos (but lack the ability to do them). I have a FF game project that I'm willing to resurrect as part of the offerings (I would really like my story-line to see the light of day). My time/skills won't necessarily fit much else.

Again, if people are going to pick this up, seriously, let me know so I can edit this idea out.

If we're going to seriously consider the idea of viral videos and a website, I'd certainly be willing to do my part. I can bing the following experience:

-- Final Cut
-- Dreamweaver
-- GoLive
-- Cinema 4D
-- GarageBand

That said, here's where it gets tough: Material. Not material ideas, per se, but actual material. Footage with which to use in the videos and on the website.

A viral video campaign was used for Serenity, called the R. Tam Sessions. Creepy stuff. They illustrated River's decent into madness as disjointed clips from recorded "sessions" with her at the Academy. They served as backgound for Serenity, they expanded on River's character for the sake of the Firefly faithful, and they were certainly compelling.

They, umnn, also had Summer Glau in them playing River Tam. And I certainly don't see us having the ability to create that sort of source material (like we're going to get to use cast members in this....), so most likely we'd be limited to material that's already been created.

But that's all copyrighted.

I have my own similar YouTube-ish idea for generating interest in the world of Firefly/Serenity. I often thought of creating a fan video of River, using footage from Firefly/Serenity and setting it to "Imaginary" by Evanescence. The whole gorram thing popped into my head pretty much storyboarded already. And I know I could create it, given enough time, using Final Cut, with some simple animated sequences in C4D (the Serenity logo morphing into one that says "River" -- most of the letters are already there in Serenity, I see them sliding into new places to spell "River," the "N" in Serenity becomming the "V" of River; the Chinese background character for Serenity morphing into the one for River).

Throw it up on YouTube with the keywords "Summer Glau, Firefly, Serenity, River, etc." let the T:TSCC fans find it, and let them discover the Serenity world through it. A great plan, all possible and all, if it weren't for the horrific copyright violations inherent in the plan.

So any ideas on source material? Are you thinking of existing source material, as with my proposed River video? Or new footage, as with the R.Tam Sessions?

No to existing source material. As you said, that's copyrighted and we'd stand to get into some trouble should the powers that be get ornery. Definitely along the lines of the R. Tam Sessions.

IMO, we should be the people in the videos. Perhaps wearing helmets or some such for those who don't want to be recognised, but us none-the-less. Here's my video idea to give a better illustration of what I'm talking about.

Remember the scene from The Running Man where Arnie gets a boot to the face, camera view what he was seeing? Think about a very short struggle camera like Arnie's and gets thrown to the floor. Then gets the butt of a rifle to the face. Black but just a deep husky evil angry voice, "Take him to detention." Or if you want to show something worse, say "her." Or for something longer, a few second long "chase scene" starting with (a look and) "Get him/her!".

This could stand to have a not so nice background to it as well. Though that could easily be achieved by shooting it in some dank dirty alley. One could put a blanket/plastic sheet/whatever on the ground the camera would land on with a pillow on top to protect it from the drop. That and the person. I imagine it won't be like floating head JD (Scrubs reference for those that think I've gone nuts).

As for costumes, I imagine that there are those out there with Starship Troopers armour sitting around. In the above video they don't even really have to even that great of a replica as they won't be "on screen" for long periods of time. So, a good make-shift should get "good enough."

At any rate, it's really really really late here. So, my brains not working very well. If anything's nonsensical above, let me know and I'll try to fix it tomorrow.

For what it's worth here's my opinion.

If the items are to be donated, which I favor 100%, I suggest some sort of Protein Bars. In order to be donated they need to be in original condition i.e., boxes if sold in 6-8 packs (granola type bars) or foil (Luna bars) if sold separately. They wouldn't cost much to mail or ship, either, and more people can do this.
This way we could use the "protein" angle of Firefly and the "Fruity, Oaty Bars" angle of Serenity.

Hello,

I am a new fan of Firefly and I would be very interested in joining in with any campaign to revive the series or help to create Serenity 2!

I read the iMDB Firefly forum and it seems like every day there is a new fan who posts about hos great the show is! Imagine all the new fans who don't read iMDB?

This is my favourite sci-fi series of all time and although I live thousands of miles away from the USA I can still join the fight for Firefly!

Why don't you talk to the guys at the 76th Battalion ( http://76thbattalion.homestead.com/index.html)? They're supposed to have fairly accurate uniforms. And I'm sure there are a few people out there with Serenity Alliance uniforms.

Also, maybe doing short videos that are supposed to be commanding officers giving situation reports. You could do ones for during the war for independence on both sides and also do ones that take place after each episode of the series in which Serenity has a run in with the Alliance.
