IGOR

I just discovered Serenity and Firefly two months ago. I was totally blown away, loved them both.
My scenario is that Joss contacts the entire cast of Firefly and finds that they all are available in the summer of 2009 for six weeks. Six weeks for six one hour episodes. Joss goes on the Firefly fan sites and explains that if enough people pre-pay
for the six episodes ($20 per dvd), it would be a go. This is just a guess, but if the six week shoot costs 12 million and 300,000 dvds were pre paid. The out of pocket cost would be six million and should be easier to market.

Be cool, McNutt. It has been suggested several times over the last couple years. I wish we had an ideal world where we could do this. Make it happen. Put that Firefly back in the black.

But it's just a wish. Not a bad idea at all if Hollywood worked that way.

There'd have to be a fair bit more pre-paid than that though. There are other costs associated with such things such as marketing and many other middle-men to get something like this to market.

It is a nice idea, but not one that is realistic with the way the world works right now. Perhaps once the studios realise that the old model is failing them and causing them a tonne of strife, things will change enough to make this possible. But, until then...

Igor,

Not that implausible. Joss has already been thinking that Straight to DVD might be the way to go.

Joss knows where we are and that all he has to do is post on http://whedonesque.com/ .

See http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/news.php?id=6846
Joss Whedon interview at Comic Con 2007

And the cast commentary is very shiny!

We hold til Mal gets back.

We keep spreading the love of Firefly/Serenity and buying official merchandise, going to Serenity Screenings, Charity Serenity Screenings etc.

The point of my scenario was to reduce the production costs by a significant amount by pre-paying for the dvd. In TV land, you are up against a lot of programs with lower production costs, like sitcoms and reality shows. Joss could have a page on his web site, where you fill out your name and mailing address and pay by credit card. The money could go to a FireflyII bank account, and used when production starts.
I don`t know if the summer hiatus is about the same time for the TV shows or not. Getting the entire cast of Firefly together for a six week shoot is a real long shot. In the highly unlikely event that this production goes thru, after it is aired your dvd(s) would be mailed out. I apologize if similar ideas have been expressed, but as new fan I just had to say what was on my mind.

Welcome home, Igor! You're #30228 to walk up the
ramp and sign on, and we're right happy to make
your acquaintance.
Nothin' wrong with speaking your mind, as you'll
find out when you spend some time here.
Traditional greeting is a box of these big red
strawberries and a mug of Mudder's Milk, and
an invite to come up to the galley to question
the buffet.
Ice-planets are in the cooler, bottom shelf -- I
apologize that we're down to mebbe three flavors
but there's a re-supply mission on the schedule.
Oh, and please don't step on ShipsCat or into her
dish.

How many DVDs to sell? About ten times the amount already sold. about 30K for the BDM and the same for the BDS. Hard to dispute numbers.

All told Universal may have made 11 mill form the movie. Sales of DVDs were a lot higher than I wrote. Missed a brain connection. Anyway, read about it here.

It took all of ten minutes to get me hooked by the show. I'd love to see more TV episodes, more movies, more anything Firefly/Serenity. I'd have to agree though that publicly funding production ain't gonna happen. Spreading the word, that's what we can and should do. I found Firefly two weeks ago, and I aim to stick around a bit, see where this ship's headed.

No. It Ain't...

Depends upon whose numbers are being used , the assumptions that are being made , ab initio , and so on...

Dogmatic statements won't get new adventures aboard Serenity finished...But they'll certainly not prevent it either...

Mark Twain made the best point about it...He said there's Lies , Damned Lies , and Statistics...

That's how all fallacious assumptions come to be regarded as truth...Supported by a chain of Lies told in that particular order...

Not aimin' to take any particular folk to task here , but these types of posts occur in frequent rashes...Usually , with an influx of ' new ' folk that have been bitten by a bug...from the order Lampyridae...class-code zero-three dash K sixty-four...'Firefly'...

Good to include the 'Source' material...It helps in getting to the heart of matters...

The original poster in that thread is nobody's fool...Although I have some doubts about the veracity of some of his numbers , at least he uses the available data to draw some correct conclusions...

A bit further on , he states , somewhat awkwardly : "...it looks like how much money Universal made off of DVD's to rental stores will stay unknown. Still, without that the movie still made money and as mentioned there's still international DVD sales, a possible special edition, plus pay-for-view cable stations."

But he concludes , correctly , though again , awkwardly (my edits for improved clarity) :

"...With all these different factors it's no wonder there's a thing such as 'Hollywood accounting' where they can make a profitable movie look like it made no money."

Truth be told , the 'numbers' that are really counting are how many new folk are coming into the ' Verse , how many 'veteran' Browncoats we are retaining , and how much product we're all buying...

Universal itself acknowledged back about 2 years ago that DVD sales had put Serenity into the black , so now the quibble is about matters of degree , and how 'creative' are the accountants ?

That's why it's always so pleasin' to meet all you 'newish' Browncoats , and say , Ni Howdy , Y'all , and Welcome Aboard !

If the Numbers website keeps posting DVD sales figures backwards, we will have sales numbers for Serenity from 2005 and maybe even some Firefly numbers. They are at October 29, 2006 now and have not said anything about stopping.

For instance, now we know Nathan's other movie SLiTHER sold 221,875 units. We did not know that before.

SLiTHER DVD Sales: $4,541,528 Units: 221,875 as of 11/05/2006.
http://www.the-numbers.com/dvd/charts/weekly/2006/20061105.php

I'll keep checking.

We've got a new comic coming out March 12, 2008. I hope we get some figures on the sales of that.

Summer Glau is on Terminator: The Chronicles of Sarah Connor

Jewel Staite on Stargate: Atlantis

Adam Baldwin on Chuck.

Morena Baccarin in a straight to DVD Stargate SG1 movie. Hopefully, we will get some numbers on that. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0010YSD7M
Amazon.com Sales Rank: #1 in Movies & TV

Nathan Fillion on Desperate Housewives. Movie Trucker in post production. Chilled in Miami being filmed now.

And Joss he is working on tv show Dollhouse.

The more people see of our big darn heroes work, the more they want to see of our big darn heroes work...which leads them back to Firefly/Serenity.
