Has anyone ever asked Joss what happened to the deleted scene on Miranda between Mal and Inara after they see the message? You know, right outside of the crashed ship where Mal makes this speech about how he's seen so much death, but they were always resisting it somehow, and Inara says to him that she can't handle this horror either. Then they hold each other. I know it exists somewhere. There are stills of this scene in the movie companion book. I'm curious if anyone has ever bothered to ask Joss what happened to it at a convention panel or in an interview.

EDIT: Specifically, why wasn't this scene included with the rest of the deleted scenes on the DVDs?

Well , Joss has said that the movie that we have is the " director's cut " , so it was probably left out for pacing and to keep the film to a reasonable length...But , there could be all sorts of other potential reasons that scene didn't make it to the final print .

Oh, I know that. Let me clarify (and I'll fix it in the top post). I meant to ask, why wasn't it included in the deleted scenes section of the DVDs? It's not found there either.

"Can you, for a moment, imagine how depressing it is to teach one thousand years of masculine ineptitude? Why do you think there are so few women historians? I'll tell you why. Because history is not such a frolic for women as it is for men... History is a commentary on the various and continuing incapabilities of men. History is women following behind with a bucket and a mop." - Alan Bennett, "The History Boys"

At a guess they maybe didn't get a clean enough version to make a coherent extra. Or they just felt that there were other scenes they thought were better to include in the space available. Can't show it all.

Yea, I'm with you on your curiosity about this, I've always wanted to hear why it was abandoned to the point of not even including it in the deleted scenes/special features. They evidently filmed the scene because in the blooper reel of Serenity, when Mal does his little dance outside the crashed pod on Miranda, Morena is there in the shot. Plus they have pictures/script of that scene in the visual guide.

But my theory is as follows. That even though from the script, it was NOT written as a romantic moment between the two characters (well at least not to me), it was still very intimate and emotional. Maybe at the editing stage, Joss decided to keep Mal and Inara's touching/interaction/intimacy to a minimum for this movie and keep that last line of the movie between them as open and poignant as it was. The line gave us so much hope, but also left their relationship very open and unresolved.

Without that scene Inara and Mal still haven't broken that barrier that they have held up between each other. Without that scene--they haven't let the other one in yet (emotionally/physically). And THAT, keeps the tension and hope going for us. So even if the scene was included in the deleted scenes for us, and we got to experience that moment between those characters--then any moment following would never be as pivotal, because its already been done. As much as I would love to see this scene, I realize its because its a moment that we've NEVER seen between Mal and Inara, and that would be such a big deal. We got some glimpses already of them being a bit more honest with eachother in the deleted scenes, but this missing one would be an even bigger step. I mean come on, they hold and comfort each other in the scene--how bigger can you get for those two stubborn fools? (picture on pg. 16 in the guide HELLO!)

Joss already resolved the Simon and Kaylee relationship in this movie so maybe he wanted to save the BIGGEST relationship for last. Maybe he decided to just lock that scene up and never let us see it. Damn. And I believe visual guides are completed so much earlier than the completion of the film, that removing the pictures/part of the script wouldn't of been an option, if my theory is correct and he didn't want to reveal that scene. OR he was hoping nobody would ask about it.

THAT, or maybe Nathan Fillion completely ruined the mood of the scene with his dancing and they could never complete a shot without Nathan bursting into dance. So they abandoned the shot in favor of a good blooper reel dance extra.

I'm starting to build a theory that Joss is just trying to torture us.

I've heard of this scene and would die to see it! - but I haven't even seen a picture someone mentioned earlier. Could anyone tell me where I can find this picture on the net please?
