Can someone please satisfy my curiosity? Which other actors were considered/auditioned for the part of Mal? I'd just like to know...not that I think anyone else could have done a better job of it...the idea of that is inconceivable.

Well honestly we're not exactly the show makers here. Have you tried googling it? Or checking Wikipedia? Also has this been posted once very recently already?

.... after a few minutes of searching....

Ok from what I can tell Nathan was approached by Joss himself to play the role. I'm not even sure anyone else ever auditioned for the role. If they did and there's info on it I can't find it anywhere.

Also since you seem interested in casting... Nathan actually auditioned for the role of Angel on BtVS. Though Joss later admitted he didn't remember that.

AHAH! I found you something! I'll quote Wikipedia.

Quote:

The role was originally written for Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-star Nicholas Brendon however the shooting schedule conflicted with his commitment to Buffy.

Ta muchly...my curiosity re the Mal thing arose after reading the part in "Serenity Found" where Nathan Fillion says something about another actor being considered.......Thanks for your response. I should familiarise myself with Wikapaedia...infact I will use it now to see if it can clarify some Stats and probability issues.

Well if you ask me I imagine the actor he was referring to was very likely to have bean Nicholas Brendon.

but..but...but Wash is the Space-Xander! Alan T said so.

Too weird to think of anyone else inhabiting that coat. I'm sure Nicholas Brendan is a fine actor, but I can't see him being able to do that switch from goofy to scary in quite the same way.

But Nathan as Angel? That would have been...interesting. (I never actually liked the character all that much, but I'm a fan of David B in 'Bones'.) But I would pay money to see Nathan and Spike snarking at each other.

On a related note....and in an alternate universe...
If a new series of Firefly was financed by a lovely millionaire Browncoat but Nathan could not return, would you simply refuse to watch the new version or is there any actor that you might accept in his stead?

Just for fun folks. I know no one else could really fill those tight pants.

Fillion and Boreanaz both have that steely glare...yeah Nathan could have pulled it off.

But I really didn't like Caleb - Nathan's character on the last season of Buffy - just way too creepy (which, now that i think of it, was some damn fine acting) - but he is the perfect Malcolm Reynolds.

IMHO, no one can replace Nathan as Mal. I hate it when they replace actors but keep the same character. (Remember the two Darrens on Bewitched?) I'd still watch to support the show if they did, but I'd prefer if they would create a whole new character.

On the commentary for the "Serenity" episode of Firefly, Joss does say that David Boreanz was going to do the Mal role at the same time as doing Angel. But he changed his mind when he found out about the chickens on the Firefly set....

The other actor reading for Mal was Neal McDonough and that when they finally called Nathan back in Joss joked that he got the role of Inara and Nathan said, "I can do that." When he was told he got the part, they told him to leave out a door and go some other way, not towards where Neal was sitting, but what happened was that Neal was out there and Nathan started running like he had to be somewhere and Neal shouted towards him, "Nathan you forgot your coat." and Nathan says, "Just keep it!" as he kept running. LOL! So funny when He imitated it.

scroll way down ( reading the report as you go, because it's an amazing report!! ) and there's one of the answers, from the man's own mouth. :-)

I really like Neal McDonough, but Joss chose wisely. :-)

You know, when I first joined the fandom I adamantly said I'd not watch anything Firefly related without the original crew. I now know that I would watch anything Joss/Tim Minear put together. But I'd pine for our Captain, I truly would. No one can fill that 'coat.

I feel the same way FM. Nathan made the role his own forever.

wo! someone else?!!!...actually I love Michael Keaton...I have to admit I could have dealt with him as the original Mal. A different take on the character but still awesome...or may be not as he and Adam Baldwin are alike on some levels. As for who could do it now that the character is established and Fillion flavoured, I don't think there's anyone out there that could do it justice. It would be awesome to see Nathan Fillion and Micheal Keaton in something together..perhaps one day if there's another Firefly/Serenity film.

God! I was disturbed at how much I liked the Caleb character...I mean if I met him in real life I'd have to kill him...but I loved the characterisation A trully horrendous bad guy who deserved his ugly death.I still can't watch the eye smooshing scene without squirming and squawking. Had never paid that much attention to Nathan Fillion as an actor before that. ( we in Oz got Firefly alot later).

I'd like to know where the information that Michael Keaton auditioned for Mal came from. I thought it was a joke actually. Sorry about the smart alec comment anyway.

Nathan played the lead in White Noise 2 and Keaton was the lead in White Noise. I haven't seen either one but I've heard the first one is very bad and the second is pretty good. As far as I know that's all they have closely in common.

Anyone else? How about Danny Glover? I imagine someone's heard he read for the part of Capt. Reynolds.... (that was a joke btw)

I imagine the Michael Keaton thing was a joke, referencing either White Noise or LOST (Keaton was the original casting choice for the character of Jack).

Although he's a few years to young, I'd like to see Bruce Campbell play Mal's dad!

I saw season 7 of Buffy after I saw Firefly so I already had an impression of Nathan as an actor, but never as the bad guy.

He was horrendous in a good way as Caleb (I really have to shut my eyes at the eye smooshing scene even now) and Nathan puts a unique spin on each role he takes.

Gwerk, I'd love to see Bruce Campbell as Mal's Dad too.

I see Mal's Dad as a bit of a rebel from a stuffy Core planet family who roamed around the 'Verse a while before finally settling down on Shadow with a local girl and becoming a hard working entrepreneural rancher.

Of course his family disowned him early on. Perfect role for Bruce Campbell.

I've read that Neal Mcdonough is playing the "Tin Man" on a new take on the Wizard of Oz...I'm keen to see it as I liked him in Boomtown. Apparently his character is a moody broody justifiably embittered and emotionally tortured guy that keeps his feelings to himself, whilst plying his own brand of justice etc etc.( hmmm sounds kind of familiar) We'll inevitably only get this on pay for view in Australia...or maybe not get it till it gets axed
(It looks like it might be exceptionally good, so I'm assuming it will get cancelled).

Tin Man was a miniseries on SciFi Channel, Boris. It won't get cancelled... and I did like it. :-) Particularly Neal McDonough's Tin Man.
He was really good in it.

Here's what he looked like:

After thinking for a while about who else could pull off the kind of Mal we've aseen, i finally came up with oone. Another Canadian who usually seems nice enough, but could really get cranky in a role like Mal. Paul Gross. He starred in Due South, and has also done lots of other work. I've heard he's quite funny as well.
