Sorry if this has been brought up all ready (I haven't logged in in a while.....)

BUT

I just got Tim Minears screenwriting Expo DVD and on it he talks about the Firefly story he never got around to telling -

Inara gets kidnapped by Reavers but she takes something that makes anyone who has sex with her die and when Mal and co find her all the Reaver's around her are dead!

The "something" must be the injection!

One more mystery solved.......

That theory has come up, in a speculation thread, but it has some holes in it, even if it was semi-official:

First of all, Reavers don't only rape people, they also eat them and sew the flesh into their clothing. So that would be a very unreliable weapon.

Also, why would someone want to have to get raped a million times before the poison takes effect and kills the attacker? Inara's way smarter than that.

The way I see it this might have been a hint at Inara's past as well.

This would be an inefficient weapon. Unless you want to make a companion assassin.

Also I'm sure Inara didn't want to be raped by the reavers. It's just when you're already captured and have no other defense left to you then you go with whatever works. Hopefully the effects are quick and will prevent her from being eaten.

Being that she's a damn fine looking women and all versed in the arts of sexiness, it's possible that she could distract the reavers form their other urges for long enough to kill them. That is the male ones.

The bigger hole I see is that female reavers wouldn't be killed and would still want to eat her.

Well, it's difficult to tell the gender of the Reavers what with all the cuts, scars, burns, etc., plus they don't exactly stand still long enough for you to study them.

As for Inara distracting them- the Reavers are crazy. They rape because they are so angry- it's not like they only pick out beautiful women and rape them. So that particular thing won't fly with me.

My first wife had the same ability, and she didn't need a needle.

That has merit, maybe joss wanted Inara to kill someone later on in the series. the needle would also work as a suicide kit as the series didn't last that long.

TIM said it - he had it planned!

He did say he he didn't have all the details figured out so I for one take it on trust that in the situation those issues would have been resolved BUT he certainly knew.....

1) The emotional beats of the story ( it would have been about the fact that Inara has loads of sex as part of her job and about how Mal treats her because of that)

2) the story device of a sex weapon that Inara infects herself with.

3) that she would get kidnapped by Reavers and that Mal and Co. would rescue her (see - Tim tied the the Reavers into the story - I didn't just pull that out of my ass.)

Would it stop millions of Reavers? No. But how many are on a ship?

In my head it's a clear fit - if you want to take this as just a story that Tim never got around to telling involving Inara, Reavers and her taking something so that they die when they have sex with her - fine. The show's gone so we;ll never know.

As I say, Tim didn't have the details planned out but what he knew certainly seems to fit with what we knew.

I think it works.

I thought I'd call attention to it for the many many fans who won't be buying a Tim Minear screen writing DVD.

See I don't feel that they're crazy. They're just overly aggressive. They want what they want and they want it now. They enjoy hunting, killing, having sex and displaying their dominance.

If they were totally crazy why did they care once Mal shot the guy from the bank. You'd think at the least they'd still eat that guy if they were nuts. They just stopped once he was dead. No more thrill of the hunt or kill. They didn't sew his skin into their clothes because they didn't kill him. He wasn't a trophy.

So, when they capture Inara I would think they would still recognize her as a desirable female and want to show their dominance by claiming her as their own.

I also can't imagine they're totally crazy because they still manage to fly their ships. They must have enough control to understand and manipulate complicated machinery. That says something about them at least.

That is one thing that's always bothered me... also, why wouldn't Reavers attack each other?

1. In the commentary, Joss says that the needle isn't a suicide kit but that it works to create that impression in the episode.

2. I do include this very idea in my one and only fan fic:

3. The companion assassin idea is excellent, and ties in with Nandi wondering why Inara suddenly bailed on the core and Inara's admission that she supported the Alliance during the war.

They still have goals and ambitions. Just because they don't have the same value system as you and me doesn't mean they're crazy. I view reavers as more animal than regular humans but still more human than animals.

They act on their more basic urges but like LeopardFlan said they don't attack each other. So, they can control themselves. If they aren't out of control then I don't call them crazy.

Some folks knew about this - Morena mentioned the syringe in an episode of Firefly Talk

A super-sized episode (since y'all have been so patient!) including an article about prop collecting, news from NASA about Firefly DVDs heading to orbit, a revelation from Morena about just what that syringe was for (don't tell Joss), plus lots more!

Still, I would have LOVED to have seen the episode where that was revealed!

it could have been a toxin that made her whole body poisonous, ala yosaffbridge's kiss with mal. that way she wouldn't have been raped... as much.

Morena told us what the syringe did at the starfury LA con - but she was NOT allowed to tell us about Inara's past - which gives me hope
