From the Dao Ying Xiong Jing

- Chi Zu Seng, 2613 CE

When given the small stick - take it, for it is something.

Take what I offer you, and with it buy shoes.

To ascend to heaven, one must discard both friendship and wealth.

Manhood comes not from one's name, but from one's actions.

He who divides nothing, and adds nothing to nothing, must carry the nothing.

Miss the target that you aim for, and you must relinquish special treats.

A woman with a gun is worthy of trust, but not a girl with a knife.

Dress so, that men might know you fear nothing.

Defend a whore like your own mother.

There are no heroes! There are just men like the Hero... Be like the Hero.

Not a fanfic, just good clean fun.

I love this. Like the Tao of Pooh, only more heavily-armed.

Have you read 'Better Days' yet? The inspiration was a cute moment near the end of issue #1.

Verse #2 and the english meaning of the author's name I made up make a lot more sense if you've read it.

BTW - the wisdom of the Hero is free to all. Add to it, warp it, borrow it, misquote it. All rights released, no need to even attribute (except maybe to old Chi Zu).

My hope is that people will come up with more, and we can build a true Jing to the Hero of Canton.

Haven't got 'Better Day' yet (being a Brit)

But then, I'm the writer who thought 'Zen and the Art of Mercenary Maintenance' was a good title for a fic...

See? There is a vein to be tapped here.

I think Jayne Cobb has an unexpected amount to say about the blending of East/West in Firefly. Beyond profanity, I mean.

Too bad about Better Days. It is pretty amazing how they manage to channel all of the characters so well, and make it feel like an episode.

If you lack the wealth that must be released to ascend to heaven, go get some!

Trying not to fic-pimp here, but my take on Jayne actually had him coming from a blue-collar suburb (AB being a Chicago boy and all) His Ma had a deal to say on the subject of Buddhism.

...Carrie prims up her mouth.

“Nasty godless place, all lighting them smelly sticks in front of fat idols.” Fingers dab at a small crucifix round her neck. “I don’t like the way they smirk all the time, like they know something nasty.”...

But I'm all for anything that gives him more dimension. I don't reckon on Jayne having much time for racism - he'll steal cash from anyone.
