SPACERANGER

Hi all,

Since I'm new here, please allow me to greet you all and introduce myself! Let's just say that a friend got me the Firefly series last week and I was totally, completely hooked. I watched all the eps in three days, after which I rewatched Serenity (tons better now), having seen it somewhere earlier.

After which I was, of course, shocked and apalled when I realized that was it - just one season and one movie. What a shame.

As for introduction, suffice to say I'm 23 years old and from the Netherlands!

Anyhow, on to my question (and I hope I posted this in the right forum): as I will gladly do my part in making the way for another Serenity movie, I'd like to buy the Collector's Edition. The problem is that the only place I can seem to find it, is on American sites. As a European, my DVD player doesn't like Region 1 DVDs.

So I'm wondering if any of you know if the CE is going to released worldwide at all? Or should be buying a region-free DVD player (do they exist at all?)? Or can I just play this DVD on my computer?

Kind regards,

Ranger

Bump! Was my question that irrelevant or off topic?

Don't know, if it hasn't by now I doubt it. Which is funny since proportionately the film did MUCH better in the UK.

Yes you can get Region free DVD players, but it's also possible to convert some region 2 players, search on Google.

I use a linux machine to play DVDs, since once you setup linux to play DVDs, it's region free by default. On windows and other OSs it's not so easy, because most DVD software and hardware is region coded, but again if you want to play region free on a windows machine do a search for DVDX.

LWAVES

I would have got back earlier but I've been away for the weekend, away from all the trappings of hi-tech, earth surfing, internetty type things.
In fact you were considered ultra modern if you had a gas stove.
Yes, summer is here, the rain was pouring so me and the gf went camping.

Anywho back on topic, I know of no plans to release the CE over here, which is a darn pity.
I would however recommend a multi-region player, they should be quite cheap for a basic model that you could also use as a back up if your original has problems.
One of the best investments I ever made back when DVD was still young. I saved so much money importing the discs from the US and Canada rather than paying the high prices over here. Still make a lot of savings although these days the prices are closer. About 70% of my extensive (600+ DVDs) collection is R1.

It's currently the only way you'll get the shiny CE.

Converting the CE to Region 2 (or 0) is easy-peasy. Just download a free program like ripit4me (google for it), rip the discs to harddisk, and reburn them, region-free onto two DVD9s. That's what I did (I'm also in the Netherlands). Or use something like DVD-Rebuilder, with the HC encoder, to re-encode them to near perfect DVD5s.

P.S. On your computer, a program like Cyberlink PowerDVD will simply play all your DVDs, regardless of region-code (it will even allow you to change the region code for Blu-rays, but only to a max of 5 times -- and there's already a known registry trick to reset the counter). So, if you just want to watch it on your computer, PowerDVD is the way to go.

Thanks for the replies, guys!

Well, I need a new DVD player anyway, might as well get a region free one then. Asarian, as you're in the Netherlands, might you have any idea as to where I could get one? Media Markt?

Failing that, I'll just use the ripping technique you described. I'm going to order my CE very soon!

Media Markt is indeed a good try. I read on moviemeter.nl about a German branch that even makes it region-free on the spot, as you buy it. :)

Usually very cheap DVD players (the kind you buy at Blokker and some such) for about 30 euros, are region-free too (try it out first, of course).

Most any DVD player can be made region-free. Often it requires a special remote control, though (and is not without risk, or limited, again, to only 5 changes).
