Hi everyone...

Fox is going to re-release Firefly DVD. Their home video department was wondering what fans of Firefly would like to see in the Special Features portion of the DVD?

Thanks!

P.S. Other than a panel interview with the cast and Joss... it's been impossible trying to get everyone together for this.

I'd like to see the entire blooper reel...

'Course , the box would have to include a 'Parental Warning' due to some of the content on that reel...

Let's see, in the special features I think I'd like to see a complete second season.

Seriously, I'd like to see a bio section for all the actors. Everyone kept referring to them as "unknowns" but some were actually veteran actors. Maybe we could get a glimpse at the work they did before Firefly. And perhaps since.

Some folks might consider that lame. But I'm not just a fan of the show, I'm a fan of the entire cast.

1. The broadcast intro of the first couple episodes, with the year shown onscreen and the explanation of how this verse got to be. I've never seen it, and have always felt I'm missing what the original viewers know.

2. Who were thge other actors considered for the roles? We know abouot Rebecca Gayheart. Who was Nathan in competition with? Was Jewel their first choice? Did they ask another before her? Where did they know her from, what work? The chemistry between Alan and Gina, which other twosomes or threesomes were in the running?

3. Even if they cannot get all then players together for one commentary track, why not have 2 or 3 commentary tracks, with different combinations of players/director included, generally including all of the players in one track or another? Can't be that expensive to just have another audio track, can it? Do that for each episode.

4. Would be very cool to see the originally deleted scenes, particularly Hog, OiS, Message.

5. Ask the p[layers/director abouot all the gaffes and bloopers which were left in the shots.

I have always wanted the original broadcast intros on the dvds.

Also a play all function for viewing the eps.

I love having Alan's audition on the dvd. How about the auditions of the others.

Any behind the scenes reading sessions, interviews.

I would love to know what each actor's favorite episode is included in the commentary; perhaps they can tell us why as well.

If you can't get everyone together for a panel discussion this would be the next best thing. I also vote for the other actor's screen test, auditions, whatever you have on film or tape. Seriously, if we can't have a second season....

Oooh! I just thought of something else...how about some comments from the guest stars who appeared on the show: Christina Hendricks comes to mind, the actor who played Monty, Richard Brooks (the bounty hunter Jubal Early) I would love to get his take on Jubal.

Just as an aside: Hey did you guys know that Jubal Early was an actual ancestor of Nathan Fillion? If this has been known for quite some time then please forgive me, I just found out.

Isn't she quaint!

JenskiJen over on the OB(origional board started by F*x) wants the vids that Alan shot behind the scenes with his own camera during filming of "Jaynestown". She said he showed them at the con in Australia earlier this year. She can't post here(?), and asked me to do it for her.

I would like to add, on the commentary, it will be very hard to get them all together, most of them are working,...so how about just the men and then just the ladies doing a commentary. That would be a very different approach.

I would like to see the gag scene that has been mentioned by any number of people but has never been released. Among others, Joss mentions it in one of his commentaries on the Firefly DVD series and Jewell has mentioned it recently in an interview she gave to promote BSG.

The scene in question was shot during the shooting of "The Mission". It was the scene in which the entire cast was present, standing around the open coffin of Mal/Zoe's former comrade in the war. The camera pans in one long shot to each of the actors who are registering their sadness without speaking.

During the first take of the scene though, Nathan slipped under the camera's range from one actor to the next so that when the camera settled on each particular actor, Nathan was in each shot as well registering his dismay. The last shot was of the body in the coffin with Nathan in the coffin as well with the same sad face.

According to Joss, Nathan played it straight throughout without breaking character and all who were there have stated that it was a bravura performance.

I had expected this scene to be included on the new Serenity upgrade but it wasn't even though it has been much talked about by the particulars involved.

Since it was the most talked about gag reel of the series, it should be included on the new series DVD.

ANI,

In regard to the above post from me about the gag reel from "The Mission" episode. Here's what Joss had to say about it on page 6 of Vol. 2 of The Official Companion to Firefly.

"The best thing that ever happened was definitely during "The Message". I think for some reason it wasn't on the gag reel. It was possibly the best piece of acting I've ever seen, which is the three-sixty [360 degree camera rotation] that Tim [as director] did while everyone was listening to the farewell message from Tracey [played by Jonathon Woodward]. And Nathan is standing with Zoe, looking kind of stricken - this is his old friend - and the camera pans around to Kaylee - and Nathan's sitting next to Kaylee, looking kind of stricken in another way. And he managed to duck under the camera and get to every single member of the cast and just look really sad [laughs]. And some of them just could not keep it together and some of them did. But I've got to tell you - it's hard to describe. And then when it finally panned down to the body in the coffin, Nathan was lying in [Woodward's} arms, looking stricken. It was unbelievable - not only hilarious, but technically proficient. He really put some thought into it. But that's Nathan."

I definately want more commentaries, as many as possible, particularly with the cast but with crew if cast members really aren't available.

Commentaries are really the only thing that would want me to go out and spend a bunch more money (I've bought many copies of the first edition) on Firefly DVDs.

It's gotta be good value for money and include some real new content, not just the stuff the fans have all seen before or new packaging.

Shiny!

Ok, in that case I have but a single request. And I ask that you let it sink it, and let it sink in well; and then when you've done so, that you will relay the request with an equal, if not greater sense of urgency to the powers that be....

Please, make it Region Free!! There's many a 'coat here in Europe that was devestated to hear that the upcoming pre-order Bluray set of Firefly (as announced on Amazon) was going to be Region A only.

All good ideas...
Others could include:
(1) the original pilot (later redone at studio request to be "less dark"), perhaps with comments by Joss.
(2) I agree with including the two introductory narrations by Nathan and Ron respectively....but also include the beautiful episode end-flash of a stencil-image Serenity [I first saw this on the Universal HD running of the series--being repeated right now Saturdays at 8pm EST, btw--and loved it].

never thought of this one before:
The Ads for the show!!
The teasers, trailers, ad spots not part of the shows.
i heard an early one was like a soundtrack for smashmouth walking on the sun.

If it is available, the mythical "Summer" scene where it is a one-shot, all cast hit all thier lines perfectly until the final line is from River, and Summer forgets it. For her career, everybody blames her for all flubbed lines.

Well, let's not gloss over this Region A stuff just yet. :) Because now I'm a mite confused. Are we talking about the same (upcoming) Bluray release at Amazon?

Because that one is also by Fox (20th century). Or are you talking about Fox, the network, releasing a new Bluray? If the former, then it seems things are not finalized yet, so maybe this "Region A Only" thingy is not as cast in stone as Amazon would have us believe -- or is that just wishful thinking on my part? :) If the latter, then I hope you'll convey the wish for a Region Free (All Regions) disc for the one you're making.

Thanks

it would be wonderful to hear from gu4est stars from the episodes. Many people go on about Christina hendricks, mark Sheppard, Michael Fairman.
Maybe commentary tracks wouldn't work, maybe they would. At least mini-interviews would be cool.
Gregg Henry is a wonderful actor who mostly plays bad characters. yet he played the good guy/antagonist in Train Job, which became the aired Pilot, wonderfully launching our BDH. Be cool to hear his thoughts on FF.
Same with the Tam parents, amny fans wonder about them.
Many other actors on Firefly have had many other parts on other shows - be interesting to hear from them, with so much hindsight now.

How about commentary from the casting agents who casted all these wonderful guest actors?

Some of would like to know the actual original dates of script, dates of filming for each episode, stuff like that.

How about the original version of the Pilot Serenity, with all the edit out, alternate, or extra scenes?

It would be wonderful to have an introductory narrative from each BDH. With 14 eps, plenty opportunity for each star to have an ep to intro. Much like Adam did for the scifi special before Serenity.

I'm the AP Coordinator for Sparkhill, a small production company that produces documentaries and the Special Feature portion for DVDs. Fox Home Entertainment hired us to do a panel interview (originally 2 years ago, before I was even working here). In those 2 years, we have been unsuccessful in getting the majority of actors together due to conflicting schedules. In fact, even getting a commentary with just Josh and Nathan is becoming difficult.

I was asked by Fox's Home Entertainment Division to go on a fan site and see what the fans would like to see in the re-release. I think the reason they asked is two-fold: 1) Since getting these interviews might not happen, they need other options and; 2) Who better to ask than those individuals that would be prone to buy the re-release.

Thanks for clearing that up, I've been wondering what makes them different, since hearing about Blu-ray. from all of the reviews I've read, it would seem that the reviewers can't tell the difference in quality. Which leads me to ask WHY CAN'T Fox re-release Firefly on DVD, with added bonuses???

Speaking of Joss, I believe there is a recording of him singing the title song, that would be great to have on the extras to.

In regards to how to get all the cast together or a least a few of them, they do conventions now and then, so if you went along maybe you could do a recording with them. An idea would be to make it part of the event so you have a bunch of browncoats as an audience while the actors talk about the particular episode. Win, win, kind of thing. Plus if I was in attendance I could do a loud whistle and have a claim to fame with that.

Ani,

Joss is boss. It's really important to get his name right since its a pet peeve among fans.

For the panel I would recommend maybe showing up to a convention and getting some time for the interview. If they are there already getting them to do a commentary would be easier.

You don't need all, but a combination of some for an episode would be great. The cast has a great rapport. They are friends and know how to have fun.

God, yes! Also, in the original commentary by Joss and Nathan, Joss says there is a reason the first scene shot was the first scene shot, says he'll tell us when they get to that part and then NEVER DOES! And want to see the Rebecca Gayheart shot scenes, everything everyone else has said, add phonetic and translated Chinese to the subtitles, at least one commentary for each episode, deleted scenes for each episode.

Would be nice to have corrected subtitles (or closed captioning). There are many errors in both series and movie. If you areinterested, I'm certain we could help with a list of known errors, gibberish, miossing caption, we could make that a seperate thread.

Examples:
in Serenity Pilot, Wash's "Cry Baby Cry" is not translated.

In Safe, the burning at the stake scene, some gibberish or indecipherable instead of what Simon and Mal say about Simon making friends.

Yes. Like how Inara is allegedly from ZENON, instead of Sihnon. Or how they have Zoe say "Shining!" in The Train Job. Now, they tell you never to laugh at subtitles, but it is on occassion hilarious. :)

@FIREFLYPASSENGER:

To be correct,

MAL: Gotta say, Doctor, your talent for alienatin' folks is near miraculous.
SIMON: Yes, I'm very proud.

Oh, there's a difference alright. :)

For one, the resolution, of course. At 1080p (vertical pixels, progressive = non-interlaced), it offers more than twice the vertical height of an NTSC DVD disk (486 pixels), and almost 3x the horizontal amount (1920 vs. 648). Wee!

DVD is encoded using MPEG2. While MPGEG2 is still supported on Bluray ("Species", for instance, is MPEG2), these days you primarily see two codecs being used: AVC (MPEG-4, Part 10)/H.264 and SMPTE VC-1. H.264 is vastly superior to MPEG2. That is to say, even though you can achieve a good picture quality in MPEG2, you need a much higer bitrate to get the same results as you would with H.264. The only possible drawback to H.264 is that, when decoding, it's slightly more sensitive to noise; and it's somewhat CPU-intensive. VC-1 is comparable to H.264 in quality, and even less computational.

So, if reviewers can't tell the difference in quality between DVD and Bluray, then either their Bluray disk contained very low-res source material, or they're simply moonbrained. :) My money is on the latter!

STREAKY

Obviously to have the episodes viewable in intended order. That is to say if they're gonna be in the "F*x destroyed the show before it even had a chance to get going" order there needs to be a feature where you can watch them in the intended order without having to look it up on wikipedia to get it right. I haven't memorised the order, sue me.

That gag mentioned above with the coffin scene sounds hilarious, that really needs to be in there.
