so i saw a trivia question about firefly that said the part of mal was written for boreanaz, but he turned it down due to a fear of chickens.
this sounds like bs to me, can anyone confirm?

he does have a fear of chickens...

i always thought Mal was written for Christian Kane but...

i remebering hoping they would make Young Han Solo with Boreanaz - back when he was still on Buffy...
(and he would've made a great Annakin... back then - but maybe that's just me.)

now i can only imagine Nathan as han solo - ha ha:)

Yup! Its true!

'Course IMHO, if they ever create a character that is Mal's brother, I bet David would be great to fill that roll.

Fear of Chickens really? I don't even know where there are chickens in Firefly. I think maybe there are a few of them when they pick up Simon and River...and Joss really wouldn't have just taken the chickens out of that one scene? Also...does he eat chicken? I guess my question is does it matter if the chicken is alive or dead? Note: Though I think David is awesome I feel that Nathan was WAY better than he could've been but I'm just curious.

Does this mean David was the last actor in contention with Nathan for the Mal role? Or was David already out of it by then? If so, who was the last actor cometing with nate for the Mal role?

Remember, Firefly was launched during Angel Season 4 so that would have meant Joss intentionally ending one of his own shows to cast a role in another.

A bit unlikely sounding to me.

I sorta doubt it was the fear of chickens. David has always seemed like kind of a jerk to me. I remember some interview he had where they asked him about being friends with the cast and he said something like he doesn't like to socialize with people he works with. Then there was the time I was going to a Buffy Anniversary Marathon and it turned out he was in town and the director of the event tried to get him to just make a brief appearance but he said he was trying to change his image or some junk and ditched. The director of the event gave the impression he was pretty rude about it. So, he started making fun of him being fat. lol

Still I get the impression he wouldn't be a fun dude to meet as a fan.

And seriously you know it's going to be a bunch of Buffy fans at a Buffy marathon. No matter how much image changing you do we'll always remember you first as Angel. Bah!

Edit: got more side tracked about the jerk thing. Anyway I think he probably turned it down for that image changing thing. Probably wanted to do more realistic roles like Bones than the hero sci fi/fantasy roles.

Still don't get the afraid of chickens reference.... Gosslings, now that i'd understand, especially if one had to juggle them... ?

As for DB wanting to change his image, isn't that sorta the same thing SMG went through , to some extent ? Not defending the guy, he might very well be a jerk and all.....he's certainly not Nathan when it comes to embracing a character or a show.... but it's good to see DB out doing his own thing, as it were. Hope he does well.

It seems unlikely if for no other reason that when Firefly was in development David had a long term gig with Angel. Though I do recall jokes being made in the Serenity (The Episode) commentary regarding chickens and Boreanaz. Perhaps this is what the trivia question referred to.

I must note - there are at least two prominent chicken shots in the series: one at Eavesdown Docks in the pilot, and one on the train in the Train Job. Clearly intentionally done. And, I believe, pointed out in the commentary.

Haven't listened to that in a while, I forget what they say...

I find that highly unlikely. David was still working on Angel (season 4) at the time. Joss may have used him as a template, while writing, until a actor was cast in the role. That's quite common.

I think David is a good template actor for the role of Mal, but obviously Nathan IS Mal. He was the perfect fit for our beloved Captain Tight Pants. Joss seems to have a nack for finding the right actor for each role.

Ronald D. Moore said that when they were writing the script for the Battlestar miniseries, his dream cast was Edward James Olmos as Adama and Mary McDonnell as Roslin. If, true, he got his dream leads!

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

You guys are making it sound like Joss would never kill off one of his leading characters.
other places have given me the impression Joss is well-known for killing off his leading characters.
Which is it?

Oh he would. He's killed both Angel and Buffy before. They kinda had to come back to life though. Being that their the title characters in their shows. Can't really have a show called Angel when Angel is dead.

Joss would probably kill just about anyone else on the shows though and wouldn't have to revive them.

Joss has killed off important characters before, but in the case of leads, not really. True, he's killed off Angel and Buffy, but they "got better". You don't permanently kill off your lead, if you want to keep your show on the air for long.

According to the dvd commentary by Joss Whedon on the episode Serenity: He did plan on Boreanaz being Mal. According to Joss, David was going to do two shows, but read the script, saw the chicken references and declined. HOWEVER, it bears noting that Joss says a lot of things in the commentary rather tongue in cheeck. He said it, but that doesn't always make it true.

I believe the other actor to be in contention at the end was Neal McDonough:

Interestingly, I think McDonough, who could have been Mal, may have served as the visual reference for Ephraim (in the "Better Days" comic), who is sort of the "anti-Mal."

But then, Joss has also said that Nathan smells like turnips, so I think we should all try and have a little more faith in the man's word.

Crikey, I'm finding it hard to picture Neil McDonough or David Boreanaz as Mal. That's always the way though isn't it

But, David Boreanaz is wayyyyyy inferior as an actor to Nathan. Not that I think Joss was serious, but the show would have suffered badly if he cast him as Mal instead.

not lazy just don't care (about anything but Firefly)
