My friends, and I are filming a horror film this Fall. It's going to be a typical slasher film like from the early 80's. We were brainstorming, and so far this is what we have come up with:

1. Location. If at all possible film were it's mostly desolate. This tends to give a feeling of isolation, and no one to help. Luckily there is a Summer town about a half hour from where I live. In the Summer it's crazy busy. In the Fall...well lets just say we will probably be the only people there. More dead than dead. We'll be filming at my parents cabin.

2. Music. It doesn't take a lot to make a cool sound score for a horror film. I have a Moog Synthesizer, and it's great for creating spooky sounds. Lots of public domain stuff is available for cool eerie music. It's free, and easy.

3. Less is more. Our film is going to have one slasher, and about 6 civilians on the run. Creative deaths are everything, and showing the killer all the time is a buzz kill. IT's going to be pretty cool.

Anyone have more suggestions?

Don't reveal too much as to the slasher's motivation, try not to have him say much, if anything at all.
Drop hints that he might be of supernatural origin, but absolutely nothing concrete.
Have one victim a martial artist that takes him on (sort of) confidently, and loses badly, and make that the most grizzly kill.
Drop an Evil Dead reference in the movie.
DO NOT make the WHOLE film in shaky-cam.
Do at least one 'turn around calmly into the unexpected danger' thing- that one never gets old.
Make the expulsion or killing of the bad guy exceptionally cool (Like a swinging blade that cuts off his feet, and he still persues, crawling to his demise, well, you know, something strange and 'EWWWWUE' inducing).

Good luck!

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

4. Get Joss to write it.

Crikey! It must be something in the water because my friends and I are getting together next month for just such a venture. Not horror but an alien attack flick ripe with cheesey flavours. (Well maybe, genre hasn't been finalized)

We've gone with cheese because we can't act, and frankly the best way to overcome that is to play it for laughs.

•If you are asking for advice however I'll give you just one that we are sticking to: Keep it short!

Just as a little thing you mentioned music. Well now if you do get stuck for some music, and you commit to your theme I'd like to offer some music I did way back in 2000. It's in the vein of Sinister Circus music, if you'd like to hear it let me know I'll pass you the link. I ask no credit for it or anything. It's just that I have it and you are quite welcome to use it if you wish. No pressure.

Otherwise I will be very keen to see how your project turns out. Please keep us informed.

dont know about plot but film grain is integral to get the style of the 80s.plus get people who look like normal people rather than models as the audience will identify with them finally a lot of fake blood probably best trying out a few different mixes to see what works on camera first .good luck

im just going out,i may be some time

Thanks for the response everyone. There are some great ideas. We plan to have it run about 40 minutes in length. It will be on Youtube when all is said and done.

We have made gallons of fake blood in the past. We've experimented with some cool ways to use it too. I want it to be like a mix between My Bloody Valentine, Friday the 13th, and Just Before Dawn. Of course all the while being completely original
