I just got into work vump with a nom for Red Dwarf.

I have something to say and ask, in the turn of the twentieth century Vermont had one of the oldest rain forests in the world but it was sacrificed for the steam engine and 98% of all trees were cut down. For a good part of the twentieth century Vermont was ideal grazing land for sheep because it was all rolling grass land, but then the trees started coming back with a vengeance and the forest is almost as thick as before, except the trees aren't as old and some types of trees which were native here cannot grow back because of diseases like the elm. The thing which is prompting me to say this is that when I was in the Northwest Territory of Canada they were so very proud of their rain forest and said the definition of a rain forest is that it creates its own weather pattern, or that it creates its own rain. In Vermont we have lots of rain. During the big drought of the early 1990s it rained almost every day and my coworkers from New Hampshire were jealous, and this last June it rained 25 out of 30 days. I do not have the statistics for this month but it has rained almost every day, so I was wondering how is it known if it is the forest making the rain, or the lake, or if we have been just unlucky with weather patterns for the last decade or more?

Heyya, Rallem!

Here's a quote from Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rain_forest

"A natural rainforest emits and absorbs vast quantities of carbon dioxide. On a global scale, long-term fluxes are approximately in balance, so that an undisturbed rainforest would have a small net impact on atmospheric carbon dioxide levels,[3] though they may have other climatic effects (on cloud formation, for example, by recycling water vapour). No rainforest today can be considered to be undisturbed.[4] Human induced deforestation plays a significant role in causing rainforests to release carbon dioxide,[5] as do natural processes such as drought that result in tree death.[6] Some climate models run with interactive vegetation predict a large loss of Amazonian rainforest around 2050 due to drought, leading to forest dieback and the subsequent feedback of releasing more carbon dioxide.[7]"

I hope that helps answer your question, VOMP!

Thanks Raycheetah, but I sort of knew the Vermont forest could not be considered an untouched rain forest since 98% of all of the trees in Vermont when it was a rain forest had been cut down, but I was wondering if it can become one again and if so when. It seems like we've received more than our fair share of rain and snow, and in the not so far past we have been able to tell if rain or snow was from another region or if it were lake effect rain or snow. If our forest were to gain the ability to make it's own weather then how would we know the difference of that and lake effect weather?

Visions of rain forests dance through my head vomp.

Rallem - the communities near the rain forests in our area (Washington State coast) get more rain than those lucky enough to be an hour or two east of them but I don't know if its a "rain forest effect" or just the mercurial weather produced by the Pacific Ocean and the jet stream.

It would be an interesting research question. I wonder if I can get a grant of several million dollars to study it?

I see the site came back up Wednesday's numbers are on the 'alternate' site as this one was being a bite when I tried to post here.
Thursday's thread will be delayed as I try to backfill a bunch of Moonlight's data. Much as I like Mulder & Scully, it just wouldn't be right not to acknowledge the only show that's beating us.

Oh btw, Moonlight is kicking our ass!
Let's get the lead out folks & start putting up some serious numbers! Our laurels are stacked plenty high enough to coast on until the polls close, but that's no way for Browncoats to end things.

Mornin' stats VOMP!

The missus and I put in 22 total votes on our IP, yesterday, including Dark Shadows, BSG, Bonanza, Ponderosa, Jericho, and all our other friends with whom we share our success. We're on a sprint for the finish, Browncoats! Let's make sure the whole team gets across the finish line!

Many thanks to those Big Damn Heroes who are adding votes for Ponderosa and Bonanza! Bonanza, in particular, was fallin' short of the totals they were gonna need to reach their goal of 500k; now, they stand to make their goal, with our help (which our new westerns friends are graciously returning). It's the neighborly thing to do, and all it costs is an additional click or two when you vote. It'll give us a little something extra to share in celebrating when the Poll ends. Xie-xie!

Approximately 3 weeks remain to vote, and Firefly is now 3 days AHEAD of schedule!

(Statistics in parentheses are previous day's stats, for comparison purposes)

An estimated 20.39 (21.86) days remain to vote, based on current rates of voting.

Our ultimate goal, 750,000, is 23,998 (25,360) votes, and 17.62 (20.18) days away! We need to maintain a daily average of 1,143 (1,153) votes for the balance of the Poll to stay on track. At this point, every vote we fail to cast is lost forever; we won't always have "tomorrow" to make it up!

Let's keep up the hard burn, show everyone our Browncoat Fan Power, and clinch our final milestone!

http://richlabonte.net/tvvote

http://www.richlabonte.net/tvvote

http://richlabonte.net/tvvote/index.html

ALL three links work for voting, so if you have trouble, you can try an alternate address instead.

You can vote for more as many Top 40 shows as you like, once every hour. You can only nominate one show per hour, at:

http://richlabonte.net/tvvote/nominations.html

Download the FlyVote voting timer, a NEW version of the program. It'll remind you when it's time to vote, each hour: http://usbmicro.com/misc

Votes are counted per network IP, so, don't go to the library or your office and vote hourly on each computer on the subnet, or all votes will be thrown out; multiple votes on rotating IPs will likewise be rejected.

Time to stop looking behind us, and focus on what lies ahead!

Total votes Firefly: 726,002 (724,640)

Yesterday, Browncoats voted 1,362 (1,257) times, 105 more than the previous day. Shiny! We're within 3 weeks of the end of the Poll, and with the help of all our friends (now including the Bonanzais and Jericho Rangers), we need to keep the daily votes up!

We got our next banner, for 725,000 votes, today! Shiny as fresh apples and a clean knife!

7,991,988 (7,973,880) Top 40 votes have been counted as of 07/25/08. Yesterday, 18,108 (17,899) votes were cast.

In other TV Vote news (shows whose voters also support Firefly and the Whedonverse, so, let's return the favor, shiny? We accomplish more together than we would separately!)...

#5 show Battlestar Galactica got 535 (549) votes, and, is currently receiving enough votes to overtake #4 show, Gunsmoke, which got 497 (473) votes, yesterday, in 297.45 (149.22) days.

The Colonials need urgent help, if they are to advance again before the Poll ends! Please lend 'em a hand!

#6 show Buffy the Vampire Slayer got 723 (700) votes, yesterday, not receiving enough votes to pass BSG by the end of the Poll. Buffy's numbers are still sufficient to hold off #7 show Farscape.

#9 show Angel got 703 (661) votes, yesterday, not receiving enough votes to pass Jericho by the end of the Poll. Angel's numbers are still sufficient to hold off #10 show The X-Files. Angel is 24.8 (27.44) days from the Hall of Fame, about 4 (6) days behind. In order to enter the HoF before the Poll ends, Angel needs a daily average of at least 831 (825) votes.

#13 show Babylon 5 got 449 (420) votes, yesterday, not receiving enough votes to pass Little House on the Prairie by the end of the Poll. B5's numbers are still sufficient to hold off #14 show La Femme Nikita.

#24 show Dark Shadows got 374 (361) votes, yesterday, and is on track to pass #23 show Star Trek: The Original Series, which got 278 (306) votes, in 13.89 (25.98) days!

Our friends, the Barnabas Browncoats, need your help if they are to complete this last pass before the Poll ends!

#34 Blood Ties got 607 (600) votes, yesterday, and is on track to pass #33 show The Man from U.N.C.L.E., which got 241 (275) votes, yesterday, in 16.83 (20.07) days.

Thanks for lending your help to the Fitzroyals!

Moonlight got 1,884 (1,920) votes, yesterday, passing Northern Exposure, which got 242 (252) votes, and Alias, which got 255 (259) votes. Moonlight is the new #38 show, today! Moonlight is on track to pass #37 show, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, which got 233 (237) votes, in 2.37 (3.31) days!

Yours in the cause,

-Raycheetah =^[.]^=

P.S.: I snerched this quote about us, 'cause I am never disappointed in my shiny Browncoat brothers and sisters when opportunity arises to prove it:

"Once again, the Browncoats have proven to be both an intelligent and generous group of people in a world where each quality sometimes seems to be in very short supply." - Chris Buchanan

*Taptap...* Is this thing on?

Mornin' stats BOMP!

The missus and I put in 22 total votes on our IP, yesterday, including Bonanza, BSG, Buffy, Jericho, Angel, Babylon 5, Ponderosa, Dark Shadows, Blood Ties, and Moonlight, all our friends with whom we share our success.

Xie-xie!

Approximately 3 weeks remain to vote, and Firefly is now 2 days AHEAD of schedule!

(Statistics in parentheses are previous day's stats, for comparison purposes)

An estimated 19.51 (20.39) days remain to vote, based on current rates of voting.

Our ultimate goal, 750,000, is 22,691 (23,998) votes, and 17.36 (17.62) days away! We need to maintain a daily average of 1,135 (1,143) votes for the balance of the Poll to stay on track. At this point, every vote we fail to cast is lost forever; we won't always have "tomorrow" to make it up!

Let's keep up the hard burn, show everyone our Browncoat Fan Power, and clinch our final milestone!

Total votes Firefly: 727,309 (726,002)

Yesterday, Browncoats voted 1,307 (1,362) times, 155 fewer than the previous day. Still shiny! We're within 3 weeks of the end of the Poll, and with the help of all our friends (now including the Bonanzais and Jericho Rangers), we need to keep the daily votes up!

We'll get our next banner, for 730,000 votes, in another 2,691 (3,998) votes, and 2.06 (2.94) days!

8,010,026 (7,991,988) Top 40 votes have been counted as of 07/26/08. Yesterday, 18,038 (18,108) votes were cast.

In other TV Vote news (shows whose voters also support Firefly and the Whedonverse, so, let's return the favor, shiny? We accomplish more together than we would separately!)...

#5 show Battlestar Galactica got 541 (535) votes, and, is currently receiving enough votes to overtake #4 show, Gunsmoke, which got 480 (497) votes, yesterday, in 184.3 (297.45) days.

The Colonials need urgent help, if they are to advance again before the Poll ends! Please lend 'em a hand!

#6 show Buffy the Vampire Slayer got 749 (723) votes, yesterday, not receiving enough votes to pass BSG by the end of the Poll. Buffy's numbers are still sufficient to hold off #7 show Farscape.

#9 show Angel got 732 (703) votes, yesterday, not receiving enough votes to pass Jericho by the end of the Poll. Angel's numbers are still sufficient to hold off #10 show The X-Files. Angel is 22.81 (24.8) days from the Hall of Fame, about 3 (4) days behind. In order to enter the HoF before the Poll ends, Angel needs a daily average of at least 835 (831) votes.

#13 show Babylon 5 got 466 (449) votes, yesterday, not receiving enough votes to pass Little House on the Prairie by the end of the Poll. B5's numbers are still sufficient to hold off #14 show La Femme Nikita.

#24 show Dark Shadows got 377 (374) votes, yesterday, and is on track to pass #23 show Star Trek: The Original Series, which got 275 (278) votes, in 12.07 (13.89) days!

Our friends, the Barnabas Browncoats, need your help if they are to complete this last pass before the Poll ends!

#34 Blood Ties got 608 (607) votes, yesterday, and is on track to pass #33 show The Man from U.N.C.L.E., which got 246 (241) votes, yesterday, in 16.01 (16.83) days.

Thanks for lending your help to the Fitzroyals!

#38 show Moonlight got 1,653 (1,884) votes, yesterday, and is on track to pass #37 show, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, which got 245 (233) votes, in 1.78 (2.37) days!
