Congrats you two!!

Zeek, I thought it felt a bit fast too, but 8 months isn't actually that bad (I think I've just had very odd year). My hubby and I had been together 10 months when we got engaged, and known each other for one week shy of a year. We got married 4 months later, and have been married five and a half years now! Next month we will have known each other for seven years, so these things can and do work out.

Oh, and MsB, does that mean we'll be getting a new name out of you? MsG -> MsB -> Ms? ?

Or maybe you haven't been paying attention.... XD

...

So, since this is the "Imponderables" thread, here:

What's the point of getting married?

Especially with current *ahem* divorce rates.

Does that piece of paper make you feel better; make you think the chemical imbalance in your brain you're currently experiencing... ER, I MEAN... UM... that your love for one another will last longer? Does entering into "an official, legally sanctioned partnership" in the eyes of the law help you sleep better? Is it some part of a long standing family ritual that you feel you must comply with in order to get the approval of your families? Unable to commit to fidelity to one another without the threat of legal ramifications?

Not condemning mawwage.
Just curious.

You sneaky ninja kitty, you stole the words right outa my mouth!

Also- another point that I have very much baffled at, WHY do people spend so much money on it? You know when the majority of divorces occur? One year later. You know the reason for most of those divorces? Money. So why be wasting your money on a boring ceremony with little originality, a dress that you'll never wear again and can't really sell and re-gain the money, only to waste more money if you find that you want a divorce? And be traumetizing your kid if you happened to get one, have to fight for custody of your child, yada yada. It's just insane, at least to my point of view.

Also not condemming marriage, just also curious, and also stating that marriage is not for me. Though I will congradulate you both for being happy ^_^. I just don't understand how marriage should make you happier than you already are with the person you're with.

Hmm, why not to get married- you don't have to pay for the stuff required for weddings, you don't have to work your ass off and make others work their asses off preparing a wedding, if there's anything that goes wrong that isn't easily fixable it ruins the wedding and there's a ton of things that can go wrong, it's alot of fuss and hassle when you could be spending your time with your partner having fun without half the fuss, you don't have to deal with any relatives/in-laws that you don't like, you wdon't have to deal with relatives/in-laws that are insulted because you didn't invite them, and you'd want the option to be able to leave without having to pay a million friggin $$ to get a divorce, you don't have any feelings of entrapment (or at least, not as many). That enough reasons for you?

I do have joy. There are many things I find enjoyable. I just don't see any point in weddings, and a great many cons about them. I've never saw the need for a lot of fuss and hassle in order to be happy, and weddings do take alot of fuss and hassle. And I've never particularly seen the need to bind those you love- I know if someone I loved wanted to tie me down, I'd feel alot of resent to him; but if he didn't, I'd be like glue to his side (or her if I happen to decide I'm lesbian, you never can tell). And marriage IS a binding ceromony, after all. I, personally, see just living in the same house/apartment/whatever together, sharing bills, etc. as being a good way to live, and the little piece of paper, the ring, and the ceromony as completely unnessessary.

Well there is the legal aspect. If one member bits the big one then there is no squabble about the property. The legal partner has first dibs. that is assuming there is any property.
Actually getting married right away is better. There is a higher rate of divorce for people who live together a long time before marriage. Seems marriage changes a relationship. I am clueless as to how. Being single makes me ignorant of such matters. I just heard the statistics from a doctor about these matters.

I think it's wonderful that there is gonna be a wedding. As a photographer, I shoot a whole heckuvalotta weddings, and I never get tired of them. There is so much joy at a wedding!

People don't get married because they need a piece of paper. A wedding is a celebration of love and faith - not religious faith, I mean the kind of faith you have in another person, the faith that you will always be there to protect and care for one another. A couple I shot this summer got married after 8 years of dating. When I asked them why they were doing it, they explained that they knew they were going to spend their lives together, and they wanted to commemorate that decision with family and friends.

Another wedding I shot this year was Afghani - the guy was from America, and the woman was a Muslim from Afghanistan. Their wedding wes terribly important, not just because of her religion. For the couple, it was a way to celebrate her heritage and to welcome him into the family in their own style.

My point is, weddings are seldom about people's needs to sanctify their relationship with a blessed document. From what I've seen, it's more about declaring their passion and true love to the 'verse, and celebrating said passion and love with all the other people they love. And I say, HOORAY to that.

Sure, weddings can be expensive. The wedding industry has made certain of that. But they DO NOT HAVE TO BE. About half the couples I shoot have their weddings in their back yards, with beautiful results. Saves on the cost of rentals for church and restaurant. Cheap photographers can be found on Craigslist, or try your local college art department. Lots of ADVANCED (do not go beginner) students should be qualified to shoot for a few hundred bucks. (I would be pleased to shoot the wedding for free, but I live in California, and the cost of flying me out there might be prohibitive )
Family and friends could donate a cake and food. Or get a favorite restaurant to cater. There are LOTS of inexpensive ways to have a grand ol' party with out spending a fortune.

I have ranted on the beauty of matrimony. Now, I am going to go pour a glass of rum and raise a toast to NV and MSB. Cheers!
