Spread the word, get the signal started

Please read and then copy/paste the following to pretty much everywhere that BrownCoats are likely to see it. We need your help to make this one of the shiniest days every.

-----
080608 The Browncoats are going to do the impossible. Again.

Firefly needs your help. Yes, you personally. Won't cost you any coin to show you're a Browncoat either.

Today, Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 every Browncoat on Earth-that-is is being asked to make a concerted effort to break a record set by the fans of Xena: Warrior Princess for the highest number of votes received by a TV Show in a 24 hour period. To participate visit http://richlabonte.net/tvvote and cast your vote. Click the checkbox next to Firefly, then click the CLICK ONCE TO VOTE! button. 60 minutes later you can (and should) do it again. Voting days run from approximately 0600 EST (1000 GMT) until approximately 0700 EST (1100 GMT) the following day. This is 25 hours, but the times are approximations (Start early, keep voting until late). The vote totals are updated once each day around 0900 EST (1300 GMT), so don't expect to see immediate results from each vote you cast.

You can vote every hour. Start now, get into the habit, work out any difficulties. Check out some of the sites below, and see how things are going, meet some more Browncoats, ask a few questions, maybe just lurk.

A very handy timer program can be found here: http://www.usbmicro.com/misc It will remind you to vote every hour (once you download, install & activate it)
The daily progress, charts, graphs, and other statistics can be tracked here: http://www.fireflyfans.net Follow the current "Vote for Firefly" thread (it changes twice a week, but always starts with "Vote for Firefly").
There is another vote tracking thread here: http://boards.nbcuni.com/universalHD/index.php?showtopic=330&view=getn
ewpost

If the primary vote link doesn't work, you can try these: http://www.richlabonte.net/tvvote and http://www.richlabonte.net/tvvote/index.html

Back on March 30, 2007, the Xenites got together and cast 2,803 votes, breaking the our previous record of 1,791 votes. The Browncoats came within 444 votes of holding the line on the very same day Xena broke through, but we have been unable to approach the record since then. The polls are about to close forever, so time has almost run out to capture this last, most elusive record, and we need you to pitch in once an hour to show the world that Browncoats are the most dedicated fans in the 'verse. Firefly currently holds the records for Highest Number of Consecutive Days Above 1,000 Votes (75 days), and Biggest Lead Over Nearest Show (182,000 (this lead is higher than the total votes accumulated by any show below 15th Place in the poll!)). Daily voting information from before October of 2006 is still being collated, so no further "All Time" records are being claimed as yet, but for 400+ days, Firefly received more votes than any other program, and rocketed to first place. Recently however the fans of Moonlight have been coming on strong every hour, routinely beating Firefly by 442 votes per day. We are trying to rally, but thus far Moonlight is still gaining. Although there aren't enough hours remaining for any show to catch Firefly, it would be the height of poor sportsmanship for us to simply wait out the clock. Please, follow the links & do your part to help out!

After five years of running the TVVOTE poll, Rich Labonte is finally shutting it down. Widely regarded as the most reliable poll of fan devotion on the internet, TVVOTE has accumulated 9,696,222 votes to date, and will shut down when it reaches the 10,000,000 mark, which is expected to occur next week. What makes TVVOTE the most reliable? Rich's devotion to sussing out cheaters. Fans can vote once an hour every hour, but only once. If multiple votes from the same IP SubNet mask are received within an hour, all votes from that SubNet are discarded to prevent a single person from running to each computer in an office or library. If a bot is detected, not only are current and future votes discarded, but the show may be penalized votes as well (one such incident almost closed the poll in 2007).

Ok, I'm up at LA browncoats yahoo group and the boards at whedonesque. Still working on some others.

Edit: Just posted at Southern Cal browncoats yahoo group, but it needs to be approved. So hopefully, that gets done quick.

I gots a question.

I'm trying to figure out if this can go on whedonesque's front page, but their rules say this:

No shipping. (What is shipping?) Any post or comment that is aggressively focused on any particular 'ship' and/or actively supports fan factions and feuds is subject to deletion. Its author will receive a warning, or, in case of severe or repeated transgressions, will face a time out and/or will ultimately be banned from this site.

Are we a "ship" since it's for a browncoat cause?

I don't believe so, but I'm not an expert. I think they're worried about folk saying "Firefly is the best. Buffy & Angel suck #@^)!

We're not trying to downplay any other part of the Whedonverse, we're just asking for help with our corner of it. Heck, add a line asking for help getting Buffy & Angel into the 1k/day club at the same time.

But I can understand where it might be frowned on from the other side of the coin as well...

Have you been a member in good standing there for a while? Ever been busted on for breaking their rules? If not, this may be your chance to get your hand slapped The folks over at Whedonesque are known for being a touchy lot.
Perhaps wait until Tuesday or even Wednesday morning before posting there, give even a brief listing it's best shot at precisely it's relevant moment?

Let's be BadGuys!

Erp. I think we may have just gotten our message dismissed by the Southern CA Browncoats yahoo group. When I posted the message this am, there was an auto message saying the thing had to be approved by the group owner. Since then, several other new messages have been posted, including the onbe re Nathan's new blog, which had to have been posted after I posted ours.

I guess I'll wait a day and try it again? Any advice?

All we can do is try. If they don't want to approve & post the message, there's not much point in being annoying about it. It'll just upset 'em & get you banned from their board & in the end it's counter productive.

Keep trying other boards! We'll get through in on some!

We're seeking help from those that're willing, and trying to make sure that they know that this Wednesday, August 6, 2008 is the big day.
A bunch of folks have come late to the fandom because, "I didn't know".

A bunch of us have been actively plugging away at this for two years or more (since we found it), and it's about to end. We'd like to go out with a bang.

Yeah. Sleep is inconvenient. Gets in the way of my voting. We only get this one shot at this. I dun wanna waste a single vote. Wouldn't it suck to be short the record by that much, and have to kick yourself for having slacked off, a little, and missed that ONE vote?

LOL I noticed!

Although there have been negative comments over there as always, there will be some folks who join in for the fun of it and lend a hand. So it's nice to get it up over there. Hopefully the discussion over there won't devolve into an argument and folks will let each BC decide for themselves whether they want to take part or not. Also hopefully it will stay civil enough that Simon leaves it up.

I always have a different take on the "is it spam or is it not" issue as I worked so hard to get the Browncoat Signal Corps staffed so we could spread news. It always hurt my feelings when Browncoats/flans on boards didn't like it when we posted... although as time has gone on, my skin has thickened.

Back to voting, it just popped up!

I have a question. I posted a message this am on the SoCal browncoats group and someone responded with this:

Mr. Labonte has come up with an awfully clever way to get people to
evangelize getting him massive numbers of web site hits, and thus huge
numbers of ad impressions, and thus revenue.

The whole thing is sickening.

Regards,

And so some people have stopped voting. I'm not sure if and how I should respond. Advice?

There are people within the fandom who have been taking part in the voting for a long time and knowing that the Labonte site receives revenue from this contest doesn't matter to them, being #1 does.

There are other folks that consider this using fandoms to make money and they resent it and don't like it. They don't like hearing about it, they don't like it happening and they state how they feel strongly.

IMHO, you should not respond. I quit posting about the voting and just decided to vote a long time ago.
The backlash is unpleasant and it's hard to be considered a spammer by your fellow Browncoats.
BUT... it doesn't keep me from taking part and doing it. I guess Mr. Labonte deserves the money he gets for being so ingenious.

Edited to add:
I wanted to say that it's always been ephemeral to me what good this does but I've seen no harm in it if folks want to have fun doing it. Plus it's a way to have an esprit de corps among us, which is hard to come by these days.

I think, for me, this is the thing. I mean, it's something to keep us involved and playing, which seems good to me. I like to feel like I'm part of a team....

I guess I just don't see how the revenue from the site is so different from the people who produce conventions or t-shirts or figurines. Except, we don't have to pay any money as fans, we just klick away. I now resent all my t-shirts.

A reply really isn't necessary, but if you feel compelled (as I do on occasion):
Ad revenue on sites is usually earned by folk clicking on the ad. Sure there's a bit of money exchanges hands just to get the ad placed, but there's no requirement to follow an ad link. I, as a user of the site, am arguably exposed to the ad. Fine, whatever. They aren't pop-ups, and I couldn't actually tell you the names of anyone that's advertising there. The voting buttons and options are made real obvious, and nothing is done to confuse you or try to trick you into following a sponsor's link. Just go & vote.

I'm in it for the fortune & glory. Bragging rights & hanging with some like minded folk.

Thank you, FollowMal, for once more being the voice of reason and tolerance, and able to describe both sides of this issue. Voting has always been a way to "help" the show, when nothing else seemed to be working, and so a convenient vent for the frustrated helplessness, and a creative outlet for many. I've enjoyed the voting, and now that we're at the end, will choose to remember it happily without the Whedonesque flavor added.

Aww, you're makin' me blush, Katesfriend.

I agree about voting being an outlet, there is so very little to do with the passion and the love that you feel for Firefly/Serenity. Old campaigners tell us it's over and there's nothing to be done, or that they'll tell us when there is, or that anything we come up with has been done and failed... so hush. It left us with very little to do. Voting became a fun way to expend that energy.

It's been a pleasure to take part in working hard to make the vote stay at #1 for Browncoats, to help other fandoms raise their numbers and to make friends with those folks. It's been a pleasure to be in accord with so many Browncoats doing something together and having fun with each other. So it won't make our show come back and it doesn't save the world... we've had fun and there's a goodness about that as well.

The comraderie and the working together will translate to working together for the CSTS screenings each year and for other fandom charities and just maybe we'll find something else fun to do too!

I've gotten used to folks who react poorly to our spreading the Signal. Here's what I said in response to accusations about Rich bein' an evil Alliance money-grubber:

"What exactly is the purpose of this poll? Other than to generate page views (and presumably ad revenue) for the website owner?

Shame on that wicked ol' debbil, Rich Labonte, for tryin' to make some money offa his web site, under the guise of providing an entertainin'
diversion for a couple thousand folks around the world!

Rich tells me he pulls in about 20 bucks a month, which subsidizes the cost of maintaining the page. I believe him, too, 'cause what he
advertises is mostly his own stuff... Books, music, and personalized TV Vote paraphenalia, and, as demonstrably among the most avid
participants in the Poll, I haven't sprung for so much as a mouse pad.

TV Vote is just a fun activity that some folks happen to enjoy. It's not a scientific poll, but it does have a purpose, stated pretty gorram
clearly by another Browncoat voter:

"Vote, Vote, Vote. Remember this poll is to see which show has the best FANS!! We know thats us. Let's make sure everyone else knows too."

And, as has been observed, I do post updates on many Yahoo Groups, usually about once a month, somewhat more frequently, now that Rich has decided that, since all the money he's rakin' in is just too much for his conscience to bear, he's gonna end the Poll soon. If anyone is "annoyed" by my very occasional posts, clearly identified with the words "TV Vote" in the subject line, you might try deleting them, if you get individual email, toggling past them, using the Post Subject
and "Back to Top" links if you get a Daily Digest, or simply not opening such posts if you read the group on the home page.

So, I'm gonna go back to sharing a fun activity that's made me a lot of friends, both Browncoats and others, as well as given me the opportunity to recruit several dozen new Browncoats from other voting fandoms, and I'm likely gonna post a few more times about it.

Anybody who wants to help keep Firefly the top vote-getting show in the Poll for a few more weeks, even just once or twice a day, here's the
link:

And, if you like, please drop in on the Voting thread at Fireflyfans.net:

Folks there are friendly, and we talk about a lot more than just TV Vote.

Stay shiny!"

THAT'S what I have to say by way of reply, and anybody who's bein' picked on by the Flandom purplebellies who like to make themselves feel "better than" by lookin' down on how we express OUR fandom is welcome to copy, quote, paraphrase, or make whatever use they like of the above, 'cause it's all true.

MIIKE

i dont see whats wrong with making money,i mean somebody is spending their time and effort keeping the votes up and earning a wage too, good on them, when did earning a crust become looked down upon. There are a lot of people making money out of firefly , be it fox, universal or joss himself with his comics. I believe getting fans to vote for firefly keeps us in the public eye and that is only a good thing in our fight for a second series or new film and may sway a few studios to buy the rights to the show ,

October 12th, 1985. Dog carcass in alley this morning, tire tread on burst stomach. This city is afraid of me. I have seen its true face. The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown.

Too true, miike!

Even if Rich Labonte WAS rakin' in the cashy money, you're right, so gorram what? Only somebody jealous of his success would begrudge him his coin, and it's not like he charges those of us who participate so much as a cupro-nickel farthing. I've had great fun, and I consider it well worth the cost of admission.

Some folks just have an exaggerated sense of "better than," and feel a need to denigrate what others do which they choose not to.

See, that's where I don't get it. Fans of a movie, in which the lead character says:

"People don't like
to be meddled with.
We tell them what to do,
what to think.
Don't run, don't walk.
We're in their homes
and in their heads
and we haven't the right.
We're meddlesome."

and they seem meddlesome to me in trying to tell us what to do about voting. If they don't like the posts on their boards, ignore them; if they don't like to vote, don't; if they don't want to read about the progress, don't. No one is forcing them to, nor are we trying to make them feel bad about non-participation. Can't they extend the same respect of our own actions to us?

All beside the point as the vote is coming to an end and it'll quit being a bother to them.

So anyone have any ideas yet what we can do next for fun?
