So, one of the browncoats in the DFW area pointed this out in the browncoat email group I'm in and I thought I'd share it with you guys.

This is the first time I had heard of this, but a fanfic writer blended the worlds of Firefly and Harry Potter together. It's from 2006 I believe, so it's a little bit old with some contradictory facts now that Harry Potter book 7 has been published, but it is quite good. I couldn't stop reading this and was really thrilled at how well the writer intertwined both 'verses, lingo and all.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

Firefly and.. Harry Potter? I'm all for cross-overs, but this seems a little .. bizzare. Apples and oranges..

Took a while to DL. Looking forward to seeing how good or bad it is.

Ya gotta admit the concept alone is intriquing enough to check out.

You do get quite a few of them popping up, but it is a weird Scenario.

Some things do crossover well with Firefly, though. Like, Twilight for instance. They're all immortal so that would work.

&& ... erm ... idk. Now I've run outta ideas.

I read that a while ago. Although it's really well written and the characters are all very nicely portrayed, Harry Potter in this fic is a Gary Stu and it kind of takes some of the enjoyment away when the story stops being Firefly with Harry but Harry with Firefly thrown in, since sometimes the crew just seems to be there to blink and be awed by Harry's talents.

Doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it. I did! I just wish I recognized Harry a bit more and he was less... powerful, you know.

I do love River flirting with him, though. :p

Brought low once again by my ignorance, I humbly ask...who or what is a "Gary Stu"?

And on a related yet unrelated note, it occurred to me a while back that an interesting cross-over would be Firefly and Boston Legal...something about the FF crew needing Allen Shore's services in a case against (or brought by) the Alliance. Or maybe - somehow - Denny learns of Companions and decides to engage the services of one, like possibly...oh...Inara. Details are sketchy and will likely remain so, as - whatever talents I might or might not have - I've not the patience of a writer.

PS-of-sorts - hell, make it really weird: Zoe wants to retain Shirley Schmidt to sue Joss for the wrongful death of her husband, Wash. Poor Wash...

It was like Jerry and Kaylee were having a little thing off to the side when we got here!

I started reading it, but couldn't get through very much of it.

I thought the concept was interesting, but the execution was a bit lacking. The writing seemed stiff and limited. For example, the way it kept repeating the same insignificant phrases instead of either trying to find alternative wording (the thesaurus is your friend) or bypassing the insignificance altogether. The dialogue seemed forced and choppy, and occassionally unecessarily over-dramatic. Perhaps it gets better as the author gets more comfortable...? I didn't even get far enough to form an opinion on the writer's characterization of an older Harry or the crew of Serenity.

Just an opinion. No harm / insult meant.

That's what male Mary Sues are usually called, if you know what they are. If not, a Mary Sue (or Gary Stu) are usually characters that have very few faults or weaknesses and are very much perfect in every way.

It's particularly painful in female Mary Sues who end up being our hero's love interest, despite said hero being in love with someone else, of a different species or previously gay.

Thanks for the explainer!

It was like that when we got here!
